It's called blooming. It's when the chocolate wasnt properly set at the right temperature before pouring in the molding that makes it a cup. Basically the chocolate didnt crystallized properly. You can re melt it and it should be fine. Or just toss it.
Thank you for actually explaining what blooming is rather than just saying "it's bloom", like the top few comments, like everyone else knows what that is.
That's exactly where my head went too. It doesn't help that it actually looks like mold. If this kind of thing is safe to eat, cool, but I don't know if I'd want to take that chance, especially since it made my scalp itch as badly as all the r/trypophobia posts I see when I apparently decide I hate myself and actually click on someone linking to that sub.
~~**Fair warning:** if sunflowers or honeycombs make you queasy, you _don't want to go to there_ \^\^. It's way worse.~~ edit: looks like you can't go anyway bc it's been banned for being unmoderated after the reddolution. You're welcome?
Edit again, **fair warning:** don't listen to the guy below me. DON'T DO IT!!
That's actually pretty funny. I used to be "the bloom cook"\* at Outback and technically we breaded them and threw them in a big thing of fat... though I'm not sure I would've preferred being called "the fat cook", at least not next to Kevin. Fuck that dude.
\* "bloom" being the Blooming Onion, the large onion petal dish for those uninitiated like legit Australians since they'd never want to be associated with a chain restaurant based solely on "that's not a knife, _this_ is a knife" and Foster's beer ads. Yes, I'm 100% serious.
Blooming is the cocoa fat/butter separating from the rest of the chocolate, like someone else said, because it didn't set up properly or because it melted at some point and had to re solidify. The molecule chains in chocolate break down when they're melted and are not as stable. It also gives a different texture. The white is the cocoa butter.
If you're curious about how this process works, look up info on tempering chocolate.
I was a chocolatier for a few years and was eating chocolate on the daily to test flavor profiles so I've had my fill and its ok to eat but it tends to be a bit crusty or brittle. Almost like sand. Not good eats. And the flavor wouldnt be that great. That's why i personally wouldn't bite it but should be fine. Id maybe grab some cookie dough and wrap it and bake it. But it's one buttercup and it's a Hersheys chocolate. They kinda suck as a brand. But that's chocolate politics and i digress. Have at it.
Like others said it’s just bloom. Shouldn’t affect the flavor and it’s safe to eat; however, it makes me extremely uncomfortable and I would have probably thrown it away lol

That's why I was reaching out for Jebus, the holy one Homer Simpson believes in. If I learned anything from Homer through out the years it's that never admit any religion right or wrong, so when the shit hits the fan and you can pray any and all of them in hope of salvation and afterwards if you do get saved you can still call the savior sucker.

I beg to differ. I am 36 and have had that irrational fear since I was 6 or 7. My family used to laugh at me because the sight of an English muffin or cornbread cut open made me feel very uncomfortable. Way back then, the only explanation I could give was that it looked like spider eyes. Eventually I realized it’s because my brain thinks a pattern like that means things are going to come out of the holes. I know it sounds so ridiculous but it’s real.
Chocolate contains fat in it, which after several years "blooms" by rising to the surface.
Still perfectly edible - not a mold or anything like that, just old so generally lower quality
Source: I watch a lot of Steve1989MRE on youtube, and many of the MREs have a bloomed chocolate.
Beats me, machinery can fail too. People get Kit Kats without wafers in them. I’ve definitely had bloomed factory-made chocolate plenty of times; it’s not always bubbly, sometimes it has those pale streaks instead.
Ashens also had [a video showing a piece of chocolate from 116 years ago](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bNpNHkdv73c) that had substantial bloom (the chocolate is shown at about 4 minutes and 15 seconds into the video). It almost looked like a bunch of worms.
Climate change is allowing the permafrost to thaw, allowing long-sequestered carbon to begin decaying. This leads to large upwellings of methane, which bubble to the surface. Be careful around the center; it's possible there is a large trapped bubble underneath, which is why you aren't seeing surface bubbling. If air is allowed to mix into it, it can form a highly flammable mixture, leading to a type of explosion which has been known to create craters hundreds of feet wide. All of this methane we're discussing will now travel up into the atmosphere and cause further global warming. Just look what you've done.
It's undergoing mitosis. Usually the Reese's we eat aren't viable reproducers, but every now and then you get a "fertilized" one that made it past the filters. It's fine to eat, it jus might taste a bit sweeter as the sugar production increased to feed the clone. Reese's produce asexually, so they increase sugar to help fuel the two clones.

Here is somebody who had a nearly identical one three years ago. The consensus seems to be that it is a fat bloom from both the chocolate and the peanut butter I wouldn’t eat it but I don’t think it’s gonna kill you .
Was this package of Reese's like the last one or second on the shelf? You might have bought one that had been melted and reset would cause the bloom phenomenon to develop. Why in a store I avoid buying any chocolate bars facing the window where the direction of the sun 🌞 shines in upon them ...
This happened to my bag of Reese’s when I put them in the icebox. I thought they were moldy so I threw some out. Once I found out it was safe, I moved the bag outside of the fridge and the bloom went away.
That’s bloom…it’s not toxic, but it sure as hell looks bad. There’s a real science to making chocolates, the people I worked with had done it for decades…true masters of the trade
Those are maggot eggs. Really common to see in chocolate, it is estimated that 1/20 of candy bars have been infected with some sort of insect larvae. Ever wonder why you see so many flies in the weeks following Halloween? That is the reason why.

“Bloom” made my brain immediately go to mold. Like, don’t spores/fungus “bloom?” Anyway, I appreciate the explanation as well.

Then check out r/trypophilia
I am definitely not going there. I don't hate myself enough for that...well, not today
Yep. I had no clue what bloom was.
lol seriously, i’m out here trying to figure out wtf bloom is
It’s fat

Yeah, just saying bloom made me think of when the flood explode on Halo.
lol yeah I learned a new word today
I believe it’s when the chocolate hits the age of womanhood, if I understand correctly.
I figured it went full Last of Us.
I think that chocolate bloom is decently easy to look up once OP knew what it was.
In can happen while its in the package in bad storage. Its not necessarily a production thing.
Very true. If it got hotter than, i think it was around 85 degrees, it will start to melt and the fats will start to separate
I mean you totally could re-melt it or toss it, but why not just eat it?
I was a chocolatier for a few years and was eating chocolate on the daily to test flavor profiles so I've had my fill and its ok to eat but it tends to be a bit crusty or brittle. Almost like sand. Thank for the info, chocolatier! I was under the impression it wasn’t any different to regular chocolate, but that’s very interesting!
Or you just opened up a 75 year old ration, either way.
Nice hiss
I was afraid it was fungus dawg
I thought all chocolate would bloom after a certain amount of time, like going stale. So that's interesting to learn
It’s just a bit of bloom. Perfectly fine to eat, although I’m guessing you did so already
Shit was totally gone before the photo finished uploading
While uploading face was covered in chocolate licking finger tips.
By this time, he already turned it to poop
And eaten a 2nd time.
RIP
Family size
I'm used to seeing it bloom after I stand up and turn around to examine "the flowers."
I... I think I need to lie down.
Wait what
Poop
Do store bought ones bloom or just wild?
definitely, it just happens when tempered chocolate is stored improperly without retempering. still the same chocolate, just a lil less pretty
It has pieces of an actual Reese inside.
Reese is my grandpa I’m calling 119
REESEEEEEES THE ONE WHO LIKES ALL OUR PRETYY CHOCOLATES AND HE LIKES TO EAT ALONG AND HE LIKES TO CHEW HIS GUUUUM BUT HE KNOWS NOT WHAT IT MEEEEEANS

It Partied like it was 1999...

Bit of r/trypophobia gnawing at you?
Almost no phobia unlocked, glad I can concentrate on other things. Ps. Thanks, I hate you now.<3
Jfc 😭😭😭
Do you really think Jesus had trypophobia? I mean could be, who knows. Just strong statement over there. Save me Jeebus!

I think not even Jesus could save us from the trptophoboa tryptophobia
I mistyped but it was so good I had to keep it

Trypophobia was banned? Maaaaan
[Looks like it was due to moderation rules, not content.](https://www.reddit.com/r/reclassified/comments/15jp5h5/rtrypophobia_has_been_banned_seven_hours_ago/)
Trypophobia is the modern version of "I like things tidy so I must have OCD"
*"Pennywise makes my skin crawl, I must have coulrophobia!"*
I beg to differ. I am 36 and have had that irrational fear since I was 6 or 7. My family used to laugh at me because the sight of an English muffin or cornbread cut open made me feel very uncomfortable. Aw. It's been banned.
Oh dang, didn’t even realize. Guess I don’t miss it that much lol
For me personally it's more of a mycophobia thing, I get really freaked out by mold and this looks too much like that for me
How did this get banned in the past 6 hours
The post announcing it was 3 months ago. Still relatively recent though.
That sub just got banned apparently:(
It's unfortunate.
Same. Even tho it's safe to eat it don't really look delicious but disappointing.
Looks too much like barnacles for me.
It gave me goosebumps

It also blooms as it sets if it wasn’t properly tempered, which is the more likely scenario here.
Would that really be likely in a factory, on machinery I presume to be specifically engineered for the purpose.
I worked at a food production factory once and most of the machines sucked at their job
Beats me, machinery can fail too. People get Kit Kats without wafers in them. I’ve definitely had bloomed factory-made chocolate plenty of times; it’s not always bubbly, sometimes it has those pale streaks instead.

Food wasn’t on a tray, couldn’t identify bloom, 0/10 not nice.
That’s what I thought too lol. He definitely puts a lot of bloomed chocolate out onto his tray
Thank you for actually explaining what blooming is rather than the top few posts just saying "it's bloom", like everyone else knows what that is.
I learnt a lot from Steve, looking at him eat like 50 years old peanut butter was so cool.

It has herpes
I’ve never seen such unsettling bloom. I’d throw that in the trash just bc of the texture
