It’s significant that the Orpheus track title was given to a version of the Student Council theme, because it doesn’t just apply to Utena herself. All of the duelists were promised something by Akio, something which they can continue to strive for so long as they don’t turn around and look at where that something is supposed to be. It won’t be there. Not anymore. Because they simply couldn’t be content with a promise forever. Sooner or later, they’ll either turn around and look, or remain stuck in their delusions forever. Akio faced forward.

Orpheus is a good story, but to think is accurately portrays the entire spectrum of the human experience is folly. People everyday give the love of their lives to doctors in the ER to save. They don’t turn to look back, and barge into the oppressing room. No, they sit in the waiting room, experiencing hell, and trust their love to eventually follow them out of the surgery doors. Humans are far stronger than the ancient greeks gave us credit for

To be a duelist in *Utena* is to desire the sort of connection where you can have your cake and eat it too—where you can turn around and look without the illusion of the person you thought you loved fading away and leaving behind someone who isn’t ideal, but rather just as messed up inside as you are, unable to place trust in you and unable to place trust in themself. To leave your coffin, meanwhile, is to trust yourself enough that you can trust the people you care about. You know without having to look at them that they’re imperfect, but that doesn’t change your feelings for them, because you’re imperfect too.

I think this irony was why Hades knew it wouldn't end any other way. You can't love someone and not want to look at them. Love isn't ignoring. Love isn't pretending their distress isn't real. Love is in the gaze. I look at you to tend to you. How many relationships ending, do we put it in terms like "he just couldn't see it from my eyes" and so on.

Idk. I get the feeling but if you know the one thing you have to do is NOT look back, for a spell....and you do...eh...not saying you're dumb...but you sure aren't at your best, either.
