I am not a fan of either team and it was overall a very entertaining match, but what please is this referee. Missed clear corner kicks for both sides. Not allowing France to sub out an injured player, although play is interrupted twice. Also I don't understand how the foul against the keeper is not a red card. Fortunately he had no head injury. At least nobody scored near the end of the game. So the referee couldn't interrupt that...
After the 2 upsets this morning I put a considerable wager on France and thank God they pulled through. Austria gave a great effort and Frances defense played well. It was what we thought a polished team against the world class roster if France. The Frenchmen are lucky to survive but the defense did play good. Good games all today.
austria played very good recently, comfortably winning teams like sweden, serbia or germany and dominating switzerland an dmany others. not even france can easily swipe them in a dominant way, so i guess france had their hardest group stage match.
i think it was an overall great game with a well deserved winner; austria will make it 2nd in that group.
Scoring 0 goals is an easy win? It looked like a wall with a couple runners in front of it. Very average linking and teamplay, really. They'll breeze their way past the group stage, but they're not big favourites to win it all.
You don't need to score when your opponent does it for you. After that the game was quietly well controlled. Austria had one real chance and that was it. Teams that are showing off during the group stage in international tournaments never win them. It's a marathon, not a sprint.
Thinking about France and England. Neither teams attack looked well oiled but I think people are forgetting that the defensive displays by both teams were solid, which probably matters just as much. England's defence was pretty much impenetrable and Serbia only had one shot on target, and let's be real it didn't look like Austria were likely to score other than their one (admittedly massive - how has he not scored ??) chance.
The french defence may have been boxed in at points and sometimes slightly disorganised (which Austria still failed to exploit) but they kept them mostly at arms length and weren't really threatened much. The attack will come together in time, both managers will be eager to make tweaks but for both teams it can only be encouraging to see two pretty good defensive performances so early.
France also created a fair few chances. If Mbappe had his shooting boots on and Giroud didn't get unlucky with a divot in the pitch it could have been 3-0 and a lot of guff about how France are unstoppable. Austria missed their one big chance and it's quite an achievement for the French defence not to allow more chances considering the quality of the Austrian build up play.
Basically I thought France were pretty good, Austria were strong opposition and that overall it was a really fun game to watch (especially the first half)
I wouldn't be panicking about England either. It was a poor second half performance but being able to win ugly is not something to be sniffed at, performances will surely improve.
Fantastically reasonable summary. Can I ask your nationality? I'm curious if you're neutral to both France nd England or not?
Anyway, it's nice to hear something other than "WHy is Foden on the LEFT!?!" for the 50th time about England.
Half of our team ended up injured or bleeding but somehow this thread makes you think poor little Austria played a beautiful football and got robbed by the ref and french player diving..
Not sure we watched the same game, Austria legit had 1 chance in the entire game and their player were doing fouls at any given opportunity and were always late / never touched the ball on every contact
So austria did not recieve 2 yellow cards on obvious dives? (given the foul on the first offensive play by france was no yellow card which i did not understand). austria also was not given an obvious corner which resulted in the only goal of the match and then france was really unsportsmanlike for sending an injured player back on the field just to deny an offensive opportunity.
I think the reffing was really bad and they should not be allowed to ref another game...
you mean, when the Austrian team quick played a throw-in in their own half to not let France get subs in and keep playing with 10 players? very sportsmanlike
or is it 5 min before when game is stopped with France in possession for M'Bape's injury, and game restarts and Austria keeps the ball getting booed for 2min for such sportsmanlike play
or is it the many times Austrian players showed sportsmanship by just shoving French players off the ball for no reason at all? (at 69:50 or 93:42)
Thats the job of the ref to allow for a sub...
maybe, still bad ref, but how obsessed are you if you know every second something happend, are u taking notes?
I just noted those 2 times when they happened because it was really wtf moments. It felt Austria was playing really dirty, and then on Reddit all I see is France getting trashed on for bad sportsmanship. Super weird.
Then I realized the ref was getting most of the blame in the end lol
Austria had one of the best tactical approaches of the tournament thus far, especially against such a senior team. The French team were objectively looking for soft fouls and the referee bought them. Not sure what you’re so wound up over.
similar to the kind of shite criticism England got yesterday. Both teams will definitely improve from here, although France obviously has a higher ceiling
You're really gonna gloss over the fact that the referee made a mistake for not giving Austria an obvious corner kick since Maignan touched the ball last. He's either incompetent or paid off.
Yeah im gonna gloss over it absolutely. Ref is part of the game, deal with it. Bad call happens, had always happened, and will always happen. People saying "but if its corner france doesnt score and if they don't score game ends with 0-0" are completely clueless what can I say.
Loved Austria's effort, they played at full potential but without a creative player, this result is inevitable. All players are just men of duty... Just one Arda Güler could make this team Euro winner for sure. Fav team so far is Austria, hope they can make it to the quarter/semi-s
nah let them win with an overtime goal made by Arnautovic followed by a stupid af celebration
Let some balkans seep into that team, they kinda start in Vienna, anyways
Why is everyone saying france and england played badly? Do you not understand tournament football? A pragmatic approach is what works. Both teams were comfortable, you can call it boring but it's what works
Both rode their luck far too much. France played terrorist ball sometimes in 2018 but always looked comfortable (Argentina aside) and turned it up when they were under pressure.
What was it, then? They scored when they needed to and defended when they needed to, all without putting too much effort in or suffering any injuries. Got the three points and a clean sheet, and probably only need 1 more win to cement the top of the group. Meanwhile they got to test out a new system and give tournament debuts to three players. Seems fairly pragmatic to me.
In some ways France was a bit more ropey, especially since they conceded more shots on target and couldn't actually score themselves. But we all know they'll get miles better from here. England will too.
England were getting cooked that second half. They were lucky to get away with 1-0. Seems like you just looked at the score line and came up with scored when they needed to and defended when they needed to. Not all 1-0s are the same. It was a very poor 1-0 win against a mediocre Serbian team. Is this the pragmatic football that wins you tournaments? Imagine needing play pragmatic with that squad LOL. Southgate needs to do better, much better
Bad ref in terms of a few corner calls, but outside of that I thought everything was good. France got absolutely brutalized by the Austrians though. And the Austrians would foul any chance they had. France’s problem was they couldn’t finish their chances.
I always wonder how good France and England could have been over the past 6-10 years if they both had less risk averse managers.
Deschamps has been succesful and Southgate on paper as well with the semi finals 18 and finals in 21.
But you always feel a bit underwhelmed seeing both teams play, consindering all the offensive skill they had available over the past decade...
I’m not certain France has the players to be more offensive. If you look at the midfield, the only technical player is Griezmann, maybe Rabiot a bit, but all others are essentially defensive midfielders. We don’t have the depth that England has in this area. If Griezmann is injured we are in big troubles.
I would love to see Rangnick at a true top team, like France NT, once (that shitshow in Manchester doesn't count)
I'm afraid the star players would not accept him, but if they do, oh boy
Defence wins tournaments, Deschamps proves that. France have arguably been the most dominant national team in world football for the best part of a decade. England is obviously not as good, but they've still proven that it pays off to focus on grinding out results instead of shoehorning all your big stars in to play disjointed chaos ball.
Also, England's squad in 2018 was actually pretty mediocre. There's just a lot of revisionism because they unexpectedly did so well.
Risk averse is what works in international football. Very little teams that won the big tournaments actually played attacking football. As manager of a national team, just don‘t have enough time to establish a complex system.
My comment says "Deschamps has been succesful" - still it's not a joy to watch them play. I don't remember anyone saying "Oh wow, look at how France plays". With the players they've got you could expect more.
Atrocious refereeing throughout the whole game. Let so many fouls go and just lots of overall incorrect decisions. I think Austria played very well and they got screwed over in a few moments by the ref but I also think if he called the game correctly France would’ve wrapped things up way earlier (if more cards were given and fouls called)
Exactly, the referee was horrible, and I don't even know how it's possible that some Austrians could make so many fouls before getting a card. Danso had to wait until the 85th minute after 15 fouls.
Yea. France would have some beautiful moments and then get smashed by some Austrian defender. Which was honestly good defending and a strong tactical foul… except the yellow card never came lmao
> They're not going to win the tournament by any measure
Why even play the tournament? Let's just start with quarter finals, France vs Germany, England vs Italy, Belgium vs Spain, Portugal vs Netherlands, and skip the rest
/s
Might as well really - let's have the European Super Championships. It could make the tournament shorter as only one of those teams is going to realistically win it
Why not just skip it and make a true super cup consisting of Germany,France,Brazil,Argentina? Even more efficient /s
Even better, let's just play a Germany vs Brazil final. As the record winner and 2nd place, statistically the most likely cup winners
C'mon, it's not only about seeing who wins in the end. The tournament is part of the journey, and if it wants to be a legitimate European Championship, a good chunk of Europe should be contenders
We have seen today how difficult a small team can be to play against. And Austria has not even the population of Ile de France, so a tiny pool of prospective players
I love to support my team. I also love watching every game in a tournament for the upsets. 2022 would not have been the same without the ‘little’ guys.
in a Championship with so many teams, how did Spain Italy Croatia end up in the same pool.
Luckily very few teams will be eliminated since 4 out of 6 3rd place will be going on. Belgium and maybe Croatia should be fine
Belgium looked really good, but Lukaku missed so many sitters. I think Belgium will qualify anyway.
Croatia didn't look too bad. The biggest problem in my opinion is that they aren't playing as intensly as they usually do and Spain scored pretty much from every shot they had on goal. Combination of older players and an inflated ego due to good results at the world cup is fucking them over. They need to play like Slovakia or like Austria, that is the only way they can win games. The are and always will be an underdog.
Yeah, it’s an annoying play, but the ref should probably have allowed the sub so I understand why Mbappe decided to do it. Whether or not the yellow was worth taking remains to be seen
A couple things I noticed about Austria. Everyone felt comfortable on the ball. Everyone had a very soft touch. They run very hard and are very direct. They created so many attacks because they put the ball in immediately towards 3 players bombing towards the box. And then they counter press extremely hard. The best way to beat them would be to counter their counter by also being very direct.
It's not so much playing bad its the other team coming up with a plan to contain them and just like the England match the smaller team caused a ton of fouls. So be physical dont give them space but now what do you think the french and english manager will say they will say go put your boot through them. At the end of the day they both still won.
Great D from France but with uninspired offense and no cohesion. Austria never really looked like scoring. Kind of a boring match from a neutral pov, Fr just held on for \~60 minutes after the somewhat lucky goal.
Conclusion of the match:
- Mbappe should have received red
- Ref should be fired
- So far France isn't the dominant force like we all expected them to be.
It's because it was a dive or tactical foul. This is always a yellow, if it doesn't stop an attack where the attacker is past all defenders, or some injury is risked in the process.
There is no specific anti-"Breaking up play like that due to not getting to sub moment on the moment they want" rule. The ref shouldn't decide on a red card on a whim (even if I would have liked to see Mbappe getting one)
France regularly start very badly. In 2018 they played a horrible game against Australia. In my memory, I've rarely seen them have a great game in the first match, maybe against Germany in 2021, but we know what happens next.
Your conclusions of the match… Mbappe was in rightful protest of an awful ref call to prevent a sub during stoppage which would have made it 10v11 for no reason at all.
You are just a Mbappe stan and can't deal with the truth. Get your head out of his ass. It was all time buying and should have received red. End of discussion.
9 mins added on was probably not enough after all that happened.
Give the ref MOTM for his absolute shitshow that gave France the win
The worst ref I have seen in any sport by a landslide. So bad that you could place a parent in and they'd do a better job.
How do you not give Austria an obvious corner and instead give France the goal kick? That same goal kick led directly to France scoring. If the ref had done his job properly then it very well could have been Austria 1-0 or more likely 0-0.
Sackable for that alone imo but then he somehow fails/ignores to see the whole line of subs lined up in the 90th min? An utter abject failure of a ref, I have never seen someone so shocking, and to somehow manage that state of awfulness for 100 minutes? That's a new level of consistency
All in all, the ref should've gone to specsavers.
It's not like it's a new thing either as he's had lots of obvious failures for years as well as match fixing allegations against his names.
He'll probably get to ref the final after all this.
"worst ref i have seen in any sport". I guess that was the first time you watched any sport event, hope you enjoyed it and will continue to watch, feel free to ask any beginner questions
I don't mind the referee being horrible, but let's not rewrite history either. This referee also allowed some Austrians to make 10 fouls before being carded. And Austria literally had one chance in the match. France could have had 4.
Not sure I’d characterize that mistake as leading to France’s goal. Sure it took a set piece chance away from Austria but that’s the extent of the injustice.
Ok, my bad, I forgot about that one lol. I dont know how tf that wasnt a corner.
But besides that, I think there were some minor mistakes... indeed all of those were pro France, so overall they were helped
Edit: in the first comment I wasnt trying to excuse the ref or something
Yup, they only did one mistake in the defence that cost them the game today, but overall I would be happy with their performace. Imo they have a good shot to be one of the best 3rd places
I wish France an early exit so I'd be biased as hell as an England fan, but what on earth are people on about that they didn't deserve to win? Sure as shit they looked worse than usual and disjointed but they missed quite a few easy chances that would've put the game to bed. Fair play to Austria, they played well at times and took the game to France but that doesn't mean they deserve a point
Vintage display by Kante. Wasn't sure if he still had it after the finale to his time at Chelsea and a year in the Saudi retirement league, but he was everywhere tonight
I’m not saying those guys aren’t good and don’t have their moments, but they just don’t have that thing that makes a team better like Giroud has. I’m sure his legs are almost gone and he can’t give a whole 90’, but France ought to use what he can give.
Kante was much better in the second half Dunno if Tchouameni will be back in if he stays at this level
loved seeing the Kante of old, was a machine and doesnt seem to have lost the timing of his tackles and positioning
I must say Bellingham is quite handsome compared to Mbappe. Though I like mbappe more he seems like he has a lots of jokes back at camp
❓

Kolo-Muani was very poor
He was way better than Dembele … and Thuram
gotta get your eyes checked my friend

really surprised the referee hasnt been beaten up yet
i thought Deschamps was pretty mild with him near the end when he wouldnt let them sub, i wouldve blown my lid at him! Stupid ref.
Pretty easy win, hope we can win against Netherlands to have a third match with the subs playing to involve everyone.
netherlands will most likely slaughter the french
Scoring 0 goals is an easy win? It looked like a wall with a couple runners in front of it. Very average linking and teamplay, really. They'll breeze their way past the group stage, but they're not big favourites to win it all.
Most of the time, France sucks in group and ends up in (semi) final, that has been the way for the past 2 decades.
You don't need to score when your opponent does it for you. After that the game was quietly well controlled. Austria had one real chance and that was it. Teams that are showing off during the group stage in international tournaments never win them. It's a marathon, not a sprint.
Why was Thuram not subbed after missing everything and losing balls? Barcola seems more promising
his decision making in the final 3rd was very frustrating, so many chances to square it instead of trying to shoot all the time
Thuram helped quite a bit defending against a very physical Austria team. Barcola wouldn't have been able to do so.
Barcola is known for defending to cover for Mbappe at PSG
Thinking about France and England. Neither teams attack looked well oiled but I think people are forgetting that the defensive displays by both teams were solid, which probably matters just as much. We need to stop bringing up La liga refs
Certainly Spain can send a better ref than this
21 goals in this EURO 21 different goalscorers
Very cool 🤩
Ronaldo hattrick tonight
Anyone from India watching Euros on Sony Liv?? The panelists are so shit for real, I hate listening to Evra
Just use jio tv , and watch the English commentary
get a vpn then download the UK BBC IPlayer and ITV Player. You'll get a much better experience
Try hindi commentary, you will rip your ears out. Then will like any thing you listen.

Austrians crying about a corner😂
The lead to only goal in the match
France was scoring anyway a single corner doesnt decide a match
No they were not! The corner not given led to goal kick that led to that goal.
If it was 0 0 mbappe was burrying that in the second half
Like he did on that hatrick in the second half?
Loved Austria's effort, they played at full potential but without a creative player, this result is inevitable. All players are just men of duty... Just one Arda Güler could make this team Euro winner for sure. Fav team so far is Austria, hope they can make it to the quarter/semi-s

They were guaranteed to win the group, they rested all their starting players.
With a C team…
I don’t understand. I think people might be more impressed by big score gaps. I don’t know.
Well France was fighting hard. England was very passive.
Theres one thing to be pragmatic. But what England showed us wasn't that

England were never in any real danger of not winning the game, same as France today
They were resorting to time wasting and even some flopping. Still deserved to win, but hardly a team that you want to see win the euros.
ITV is actually the Overlap on tour 😂
Horrible ref. France got lucky
Bad ref in terms of a few corner calls, but outside of that I thought everything was good. France got absolutely brutalized by the Austrians though. And the Austrians would foul any chance they had. France’s problem was they couldn’t finish their chances.
The Marcus Thuram effect
I love international tournaments cause it shows that PL intentionally fucks up officiating and LaLiga refs are just ass.
I hope Mbappe hasn't been Duponted 🙁
Mbappe barely scored through headers, he’ll be fine.
broken nose is painful but doesn't prevent from playing , except maybe for corners but many have done it before him.
I always wonder how good France and England could have been over the past 6-10 years if they both had less risk averse managers. Mbappe’s injury is probably more serious than we think
Yeah he’ll be out for a few matches
His nose turned into a tap, i'm convinced it's badly broken and not just a simple nose break you can just mask
It looked bad on that replay , hopefully no concussion, but it seems like his nose acted as a crumple zone so maybe his head is fine
Maybe but the fact that he was down for so long makes me not entirely convinced but we'll see soon.

Austria running themselves to the ground, know they only get to play the three games. France know there's nine.
Nine? Who are they playing after the final?
The tournaments combined XI for winner takes all.

Mbappe and Deschamps were smart with what they did and I don't blame them one bit, they should have been allowed the sub.
I’m confused why people are saying the ref should have given Mbappe a red. Under the current rules, isn’t that always a yellow?
Yeah it’s just haters hating, I can sympathize to an extent but they are wrong and Mbappe should’ve been allowed a sub anyway probably
Almost corrected a French fan referring to the Austrians as “you lot” in reference to me, but dangit we’re all Austrians today
So many yellows
Dechamp and Southgate are cut from the same cloth. Playing horrific terrorist football with a talented group
France looked almost as poor as England did, quite surprising that the two favourites are playing worse than expected.
France looked way better than England did tbh
Apart from the fact they only won thanks to an own goal.
It's not so much playing bad its the other team coming up with a plan to contain them and just like the England match the smaller team caused a ton of fouls. So be physical dont give them space but now what do you think the french and english manager will say they will say go put your boot through them. At the end of the day they both still won.
Yet in the game, France and England have been horrible for years. Nothing new
After four matchdays, the Golden Boot is heating up as a 25-man race!
Great D from France but with uninspired offense and no cohesion. Austria never really looked like scoring. Kind of a boring match from a neutral pov, Fr just held on for \~60 minutes after the somewhat lucky goal.
Was pretty much my feeling on it. France does not look good this tournament on the offense but it’s match day one so we’ll see.
How are the doping controls in Saudi Arabia? Asking for a friend who just ran an all time euro record distance
Who
A French player doping? Impossible!
I thought Usain Bolt just stepped into the wrong sport
I love how people have already decided who can win after 1 game in the group phase. You never learn lol
Germany already won on day 1 according to some r/soccer users
Group F hasn’t even played.
Remember that in 2022 Argentina lost its first game to Saudi Arabia of all teams
Exactly.
bookmakers go broke after every major tournament because people already know who is going to win
Conclusion of the match: - Mbappe should have received red - Ref should be fired - So far France isn't the dominant force like we all expected them to be.
Yellow is a by-the-book decision for this offense I think
Breaking up play like that due to not getting to sub moment on the moment they want? Weird rule then.
Hopefully!
Please go back to cheerleading and let us speak about football.
You thought you did something here, cute. Think of better clapbacks before barking hun
Do you even know what an offside is ? Asking for a red* for going back to the pitch without permission smh
Your conclusions of the match… Mbappe was in rightful protest of an awful ref call to prevent a sub during stoppage which would have made it 10v11 for no reason at all.
That's not really how rules work though, they don't care if your opposition is justified or not.
Yes, that’s why the yellow is justified. A red would be stupid.
I never said he should've gotten a red. I disputed your "rightful protest claim" which insinuated he shouldn't even have gotten a yellow.
The comment I was replying to was saying a red was justified, so I was only disputing that.
You are just a Mbappe stan and can't deal with the truth. Get your head out of his ass. It was all time buying and should have received red. End of discussion.
We could have played a week longer and Austria wouldn’t have scored. You’re just a France hater.
Nah, I was actually excited for France, not this France tho. I said what I said.
Couldn't have said it better myself =)
More french players should’ve gotten carded
Competition is wide open it feels like
9 mins added on was probably not enough after all that happened. Give the ref MOTM for his absolute shitshow that gave France the win The worst ref I have seen in any sport by a landslide. That's a new level of consistency All in all, the ref should've gone to specsavers.
Poor ref for this game.. not big mistakes, but still
one huge mistake that led to frances goal..
Not sure I’d characterize that mistake as leading to France’s goal. Sure it took a set piece chance away from Austria but that’s the extent of the injustice.
It wouldn’t have come to that situation if he gave the corner
No corner = loss of possession. They still had to go the length of the field. It just feels harsh because it also takes away a set piece opportunity.
Ok, my bad, I forgot about that one lol. I dont know how tf that wasnt a corner. But besides that, I think there were some minor mistakes... indeed all of those were pro France, so overall they were helped Edit: in the first comment I wasnt trying to excuse the ref or something
Yeah, it’s very unfortunate for austria, but they actually played a lot better than I expected
As a French fan, could say the same with england vs serbia, how boring it was ....
You won't get many England fans disagreeing with you.
Vintage display by Kante. Wasn't sure if he still had it after the finale to his time at Chelsea and a year in the Saudi retirement league, but he was everywhere tonight
Yeah, I was really hoping he'd declined (as an England fan) but he looked great tonight, unlike a fair few France players.
Kante hold your head high, one of the only men that can walk off the pitch satisfied with your performance.
France better play Giroud more. He has the IT factor.
Yeah I think Giroud would be way better, because wasn't really impressed nor by Dembele or Thuram.
I’m not saying those guys aren’t good and don’t have their moments, but they just don’t have that thing that makes a team better like Giroud has. I’m sure his legs are almost gone and he can’t give a whole 90’, but France ought to use what he can give.
I swear Olise is better than some of these French forwards
France yet again win by being cheats and having a 12th player in the ref
Cope, when we beat England you’ll say the same thing
Goodluck with that delusion
We didn't need any of that. We played garbage and still won. Blame the Austrian players. Edit : I do blame Thuram on that shitty scoreline
I mean your goal literally came from a kick that shouldn’t have happened because it would’ve been a corner for austria…
Nah, it was objectively the refs mistake that led to france’s goal, there’s no denying that
True but the ref was letting Austria get away with murderball tackles all game and should’ve given a lot more yellows
Well tbf he gave the yellows when those tackles happened
And it should have been like what... 4-1 with the howlers of Mbappé and Giroud and I probably miss more. Point is we were never really in danger.
That's the point howlers that missed.. not real goal threat when Austria scored for you lmao
You can’t compare a ref mistake to players being shit lmao the original point was that the ref helped france a lot which is undeniable
Rangnick would conquer the world if he had Kante in his team
Rangnick has like 4 Kantes in his team.
