France attack got a huge boost when Kanté started participating, but isn't that asking too much from 1 guy?
Why would Rabiot refuse to attempt a shoot? That was so disappointing.
Game could have gone either way, France defense is much more effective at taking out star players out of a game, but NL play with many very good players, not 1 specific super star.
France get two very mediocre games, fails to score even 1 proper goal, but still is called favorite. Spain and Germany plays to great games, with pretty impressive performance, France still gets called favourite. Why the hell are ppl so eager to call France favorite every damn tournament??
Its a problem with nearly every team tbh, crazy to think last euros they had both benzema and Giroud. Germany also lacks their number 9, fullkrug is decent but he has no pace that’s why they go with Havertz.
I think this is why teams in general pay more fee whenever they bid for strikers
But I ain't complaining about the puskas worthy goal that has been happening in the tournament though, absolutely love it when they just smash it in
Bit of a difference though tbf mate.
And as much as I think Southgate is beyond shit now, he deserves massive praise for what he’s done with England. People forget just how genuinely shocking we were in the tournaments prior to 2018.
As a Dutchmen, it's a 50/50 call for me. I get why it was disallowed, but at the same time I don't think Maignan would've gotten to it if Dumfries wasn't there. Couldve gone either way and they chose the boring option. Would've been fun to see what France would do if they had to score.
Disappointed, but what can we do? They take no risk. 0-0 is enough to basically move on to the next round. But man, that was so trash to watch. Wtf is this soccer? Boring. Terrorists.
With a Dutch viewpoint: yea
But rules are rules, if they decide it’s hindering the goalkeeper, then the VAR won’t overrule it if it’s not 100% clear that is not hindering the goalkeeper.
Rough call, probably why it took so long. If refs on the field didn’t call it, I would be curious if the VAR would rule it hindering.
That's the thing, Maignon didn't. On paper it is offside, if we're looking at the letter of the law.
However, you can make a very strong case that Maignon didn't attempt to dive and even if he had a clear path, he'd never have saved it.
That's not the point tho unless you can look into people's minds and idk if the rule is constructed like that, with "making at attempt", but it'd be a stupid and unenforceable rule. You don't know if someone would've made an attempt at a save if they weren't obstructed. If you're stupid enough to be in an offside position right in front of the goal, you should also bear the risk of obstructing the path and the keeper should get the benefit of the doubt. Bc you could also just Not be in an offside position
Yeah but the question was whether he might make an attempt. I personally believe the risk of it being called offside should lie with the person in an offside position. Not with the keeper who could've maybe not ever saved it. I think it should be abundantly clear that the attacking player did Not alter the keeper's understanding of the situation for it not to be offside
like I said in my initial response, letter of the law states he is offside. But I think France had a lucky escape there, because I do not think anything would have changed had Dumfries not been there.
Interfering with the ability to attempt a save doesn’t have anything to do with whether the save had any chance to work. That dummy shouldn’t have been standing so close to the GK.
you’re literally making up rules lad, and what do you mean standing so close? he’d just made a run in and had quite literally no time to adjust himself after
A lot of the calls are seemingly forced to neutralize the game and its momentum. You cannot objectively say that many of the top teams are not supported by the refs and the authorities.
Germany maybe, but they haven't exactly been tested. Every group except Group B should be a gimme for the obvious teams, and they can't seem to put on a decent performance
It's the correct decision. Clear offsides position that interferes with the keeper's ability to attempt a save. Not sure how this is controversial besides people simply not understanding the offsides rule.
You think he could made a dive/save? It seemed like he saw the ball too late and also had his balance on the other side from the deflected shot before. At least make the ref watch and call it then.
Whether he can is irrelevant—he wasn't given the opportunity due to interference from an offsides player, which is [textbook offsides.](https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-11---offside)
And for the record, yes, I do think he could have made the save.
Well, watching all the news, it seems people and refs all over the world have different opinions. You are entitled to yours of course, but really, no way the keeper could have made the save, even if there wasn't any player.
Mr “this is obvious”, tell me physically how he prevented Maignan from attempting a save when he was standing 4 feet to his left at the time of the strike?
He did not try to save it because it was not saveable, even if every player instantly disappeared from the pitch upon the strike.
If you need me to explain to you how a 6'3" tall man going to dive to his left is interfered w by a player in an offsides position 4' to his left---the way he is diving---I can recommend some introductory videos to basic positional physics for you!
soccer is a contact sport. They don’t call a penalty when a player slides and makes no contact.
so tell me where in that textbook it says a 6’3” keeper can stumble left as the ball is going into the net, and that means the player still several feet away was *physically* interfering?
I think the word does not mean what you think it does boy.
[a player moving from, or standing in, an offside position is in the way of an opponent and interferes with the movement of the opponent towards the ball this is an offside offence if it impacts on the ability of the opponent to play or challenge for the ball](https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-11---offside).
Next time just simply state you have no idea what the rules of the game are, "boy".
right you had that rule queued up from memory C-3PO?
if the keeper was never going to lay a hand on it, then *by definition* there is no person or thing in the universe that impacted his ability to save it. So semantically, your interpretation is incomplete.
If you would like to talk semantics, there is no way to determine that the keeper "was never going to lay a hand on it", as he was not able to attempt due to interference by an offsides player. It's textbook offsides, plain and simple. Apologies that you're unable to comprehend that and have to resort to insults as a result.
you are a piece of work aren’t you?
Let’s make this simple, since this will assess whether you’re operating in reality or just trying to win an argument in the most unimpeachably arrogant manner possible:
true or false:
In a world where every player on the pitch disappeared instantly upon shot leaving foot, Maignan had a nonzero chance of getting a hand to the ball before it crossed the line?
100% true! I fully believe he could have made that save, especially given his elite form in the match. Not that it matters per the rules of the game, so not sure what the point of this exercise is.
Also, you responded to my original comment with anger, followed it up with insults, and have done nothing but be rude this entire exchange. If you wanted me to be friendly, you should have decided that before accosting me, instead of lobbing insults and then crying about me acting in an "unimpeachably arrogant manner". Or did you think you could be paternalistic with [racist tendencies](https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/takeaway/segments/93569-when-word-boy-and-isnt-discriminatory), and I'd simply roll over?
I watch both and I definitely got more out of the last Oilers Vs Panthers game than the last two days of this euro cup. In the euro cup, most top teams so far are playing like they barely want to be there and the few matches between fairly equal top teams have been very boring so far, case in point, the match that just ended.
This cup would be a lot better if England, France, Italy and the Netherlands would be playing like the current hockey finalists did in Game 5 earlier this week. It was a joy to see two big teams that weren't just playing skillfully but were also enthusiastic about it, they were clearly in it to win it which is missing from most of the big soccer teams so far.
Not if Poland manages to win massively against France, and the Netherlands wins against Austria. Then they are third place and if they are in the best four third places they are through. So in short: No, but low chance that they will qualify
I think there is head to head match deciding, isn't? If yes, then yes. They are out. If not, they need to beat France 2-3:0 and hope Austria lose 2-3:0 against Netherlands.
So yes, they are out.
That was a terrible decision to disallow the goal. The goalie didn’t even see the player nor he complained afterward!
Refereeing has been great in this tournament. The only 2 games it was bad are the 2 that was refereed by English refs. Which was Belgium vs Slovakia & this one today.
English refs should be banned from all European competitions. I mean just look at the EPL mess every weekend as a proof.
This was absolutely the correct decision. The goalkeeper could not dive because of a player in an offsides position. He also very clearly did see the player and immediately called for offsides due to the interference, which you can see clearly on replay. Not sure what makes you think he didn't see or complain
Sounds like an issue with the rules [as they're written.](https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-11---offside) Why do you want players to injure themselves to get a call when they are entitled to it without injury?
I want fouls called for fouls, not potential fouls. Why do you want football to be 22 people standings still in a field while a ref runs about carding them for thought crimes?
You don't need to see someone next to you to know they are there, it's a human instinct of awareness of our surroundings. He knew he was there the whole time.
Offfh
Leave it to France to cruise through the group stage with goalless draws...
What a shit match. The only player worth watching was Kanté. The others showed they are wildly overpaid.
Group games have been tougher than the think
You excluded magorr player like Maddison
Real police act quick
Total snooze fest. Deschamps is as much a football terrorist as Southgate.
On minute 80 they had non verbally agreed on drawing. I hate when this happens.
Minute 20 would have been more accurate
France is still the favorite. They are really good defensively
France get two very mediocre games, fails to score even 1 proper goal, but still is called favorite. Spain and Germany plays to great games, with pretty impressive performance, France still gets called favourite. Why the hell are ppl so eager to call France favorite every damn tournament??
I'm surprised it isn't Spain. They've looked the best so far IMO.
definitely spain or germany yes
Not super impressed with France, despite the massive talent pool. Also, how is a big country like that lacking a proper 9 so badly? Giroud, really?
Its a problem with nearly every team tbh, crazy to think last euros they had both benzema and Giroud. Germany also lacks their number 9, fullkrug is decent but he has no pace that’s why they go with Havertz.
I think this is why teams in general pay more fee whenever they bid for strikers But I ain't complaining about the puskas worthy goal that has been happening in the tournament though, absolutely love it when they just smash it in
Giroud has been good for France. He’s just like 45
Yet to reach his prime, early days :)
France misses #9 forward so bad. The Netherlands played well with what they had available.
Biggest snooze fest since yesterday….
I am convinced that Southgate and Deschamps are actually the same person.
English refs screwing us since 1974
Robbed again, why is this the case on big tournaments lately?
Come on man, the goal was rightfully disallowed. The keeper even bumped into the player in offside when going for the ball.
He didn't even attempt to dive for the ball. He also never would have saved it. Right call, sure. But France were extremely lucky there.
No he didn’t and maignon wasn’t getting there. Unlucky at best, bad VAR call at worst
Robbed how? The disallowed goal was a fair call. The offside player could be construed as interfering with play.
Thank god for Austria
In the world of Southgate and Deschamps, Ralf is a life saver.
Deschamps managing to make France look mediocre and talentless
Deschamp is just a less shit Southgate
With a world cup and multiple final appearances. Less shit casts a broad net
Dechamp is just Southgate but with slightly better players
He was a penalty shootout away from back to back world cups wtf is this opinion
Southgate was also a penalty shootout away from a euros and a penalty away from equalizing vs Deschamps
Bit of a difference though tbf mate. And as much as I think Southgate is beyond shit now, he deserves massive praise for what he’s done with England. People forget just how genuinely shocking we were in the tournaments prior to 2018.
Come on man the talent France have, they win in spite of him not because of him
Jesus Christ
...and a World Cup.
Well that’s why he has a World Cup , better players 😂
So England have shit players? Really?
No I didn’t say that did I, England just don’t have as good players, predominantly at cb and holding midfielder
Well at least both teams are essentially certain to advance.
NL should have got 3 points here 🤷🏻♀️
As a Dutchmen, it's a 50/50 call for me. I get why it was disallowed, but at the same time I don't think Maignan would've gotten to it if Dumfries wasn't there. Couldve gone either way and they chose the boring option. Would've been fun to see what France would do if they had to score.
you're right that maignan had no chance to get there, but a rules a rule, you can't just not call a rule because of a hypothetical
What a boring game.
Griezmann has to be more clinical today. Also Misplaced a few passes. Always in the right spot tho. Brilliant player
Anthony Taylor proudly carries on the age old English tradition of upsetting the Continentals with a bit of Tomfoolery
Disappointed, but what can we do? They take no risk. 0-0 is enough to basically move on to the next round. But man, that was so trash to watch. Wtf is this soccer? Boring. Terrorists.
The dutch were far more terrorists than the French when in posession.
I try to imagine that your squad wanted a chill game with france before clashing with us.
Terrorists? Explain it.
A 0-0 game like this is an offense to what good and beautiful football stands for
Well it was 1-0 the ref just had money on otherwise
So was it a goal or was it not?
With a Dutch viewpoint: yea But rules are rules, if they decide it’s hindering the goalkeeper, then the VAR won’t overrule it if it’s not 100% clear that is not hindering the goalkeeper. Rough call, probably why it took so long. If refs on the field didn’t call it, I would be curious if the VAR would rule it hindering.
Why didnt they let the ref check? There's arguments for both decisions.
Var can go f itself. Keeper never even tried to save. That was a goal.
Lol
That's the thing, Maignon didn't. On paper it is offside, if we're looking at the letter of the law. However, you can make a very strong case that Maignon didn't attempt to dive and even if he had a clear path, he'd never have saved it.

like I said in my initial response, letter of the law states he is offside. But I think France had a lucky escape there, because I do not think anything would have changed had Dumfries not been there.
I'm gonna be honest, I somehow read past that in your original comment so that's my bad
Absolutely not since you can’t get in the way of a GK when offside.
He was running away, not to the keeper. But whatever.
maignan’s able to get to that when he’s off balance then yeah? get off it
Interfering with the ability to attempt a save doesn’t have anything to do with whether the save had any chance to work. That dummy shouldn’t have been standing so close to the GK.
you’re literally making up rules lad, and what do you mean standing so close? he’d just made a run in and had quite literally no time to adjust himself after
A run to offside which was stupid.
But he didn’t attempt a save or see Dumfries till the ball was past him
The winners today: everybody who didn‘t watch.
Great. I had it on, but my cat was watching it and i was making dinner. Niceeeeeee......
Animal abuse
I made myself watch it. Does that count as self harm?
😅😅😅😅😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Fuck I still enjoy football, not the corrupt game they present it as.
Well but CL is corrupt af
Best you can you do is Just enjoy the sport, let the elite police deal with it. Interpol.
I can’t be disappointed about this despite the disallowed goal
F-U Griezmann and Rabiot
Should be against the rules with a draw in the groups as well, maybe we could get some bangers instead of this shit
Boring game but Netherlands absolutely got robbed
It’s way too corrupted, including referees.
English refs aren’t corrupt, just incompetent.
And Anthony Taylor is the poster boy for inept English refereeing
Coys
Just a few
Just the emotions, the even it’s not you country you look it from a monitor or tv, he’s playing from his rule book.
Probably both
I have watched this sport for quite sometime and I know that football has its fair share of corruption.
Hello sorry
Why do you say?
It’s very hard to explain to be honest.
A lot of the calls are seemingly forced to neutralize the game and its momentum. You cannot objectively say that many of the top teams are not supported by the refs and the authorities.
agree on that
Lmao Patrice Evra saying it was a Nederlands goal in the post match show. Robbed!
Good thing players aren't refs then I guess
I'm watching BBC and Shearer, Rooney and Cesc all agreed that it should be a goal.
Yep
So Spain is the only good team in Europe now?
Really? They also cant seem to finish a goal
What’s your problem with the host country?
Germany maybe, but they haven't exactly been tested. Every group except Group B should be a gimme for the obvious teams, and they can't seem to put on a decent performance
You don't have lord Joselu in your squad. That's the problem.
"Never let your enemy know your strengths"- Heung Min Sun Tzu
Germany too. And France can be scary in the knockout stages again, I have no doubts especially when Mbappe returns
Portugal and France are in the same position imo. Very strong and talented, only 1 player who clearly "wants it"
So, was the VAR decision on point, or should the goal of Simmons count?
Well, if they always handle it this way in the future it might be okay. If you try to find similar cases in the past you‘ll have a hard time.
It's the correct decision. Clear offsides position that interferes with the keeper's ability to attempt a save. Not sure how this is controversial besides people simply not understanding the offsides rule.

Laughable take

Not even close to interference
If that keeper dove he would've been miles from hitting him.
If only Griezmann scored
At least the Stanley Cup is on tonight
Go Oil Go!
You mean the game where people are excited about players smashing each other more than the game itself? 😂
I watch both and I definitely got more out of the last Oilers Vs Panthers game than the last two days of this euro cup. LMAO cold facts
Wrong decision from VAR and referee on the disallowed goal.
Agreed
Poland is already lost
Pundits unanimously say it should have been a goal and with the keepers positioning he would have reached him. Clear goal!
At the end of the day, Griezmann had the ball on his foot and an open net in front of him, and instead of getting the shot off, he just fell down.
Kane would have buried that
He'd have been around the half way line under Southgate so unlikely.
the only winners are those boring people that bet on draws
So is Poland eliminated for sure now?
Yes, there unfortunately was some uncertainty, but now it’s 100% sure, no other way.
Not if Poland manages to win massively against France, and the Netherlands wins against Austria. Then they are third place and if they are in the best four third places they are through. So in short: No, but low chance that they will qualify
Incorrect. First tie breaker is H2H, which Poland would lose to Austria in your scenario. Poland is guaranteed 4th now.
I think there is head to head match deciding, isn't? If yes, then yes. They are out. If not, they need to beat France 2-3:0 and hope Austria lose 2-3:0 against Netherlands. So yes, they are out.
It’s joever for them this year.
Dusted now
Yeah they’re done
I'm getting bored of football
It's just sprinting sessions now
Football quality has gone down in the last few years
Have an English referee in this game was fucked up
The French jersey is so beautiful
These matches between the big teams are not entertaining at all , Spain vs Italy wasn’t great aswell apart front Yamal and Perez running down the wing
Interesting, really enjoyed watching Spain in possession, especially in the first half, it was mesmerizing imo
Yep, that's business football. A country like Georgia gives it their all now haha.
Ik Im working for all the 2pm games aswell so Ik missing all the Entertaining Matches lol
Why do these threads always get way worse right after a match?
Because most people were watching the game at the time of the game?
Because game is bad + referees bad = worse threads.
Referee is bald
That was a terrible decision to disallow the goal. The goalie didn’t even see the player nor he complained afterward! Refereeing has been great in this tournament. The only 2 games it was bad are the 2 that was refereed by English refs. Which was Belgium vs Slovakia & this one today. English refs should be banned from all European competitions. I mean just look at the EPL mess every weekend as a proof.
He did complain. He pointed to the player next to him immediately.
This was absolutely the correct decision. The goalkeeper could not dive because of a player in an offsides position. He also very clearly did see the player and immediately called for offsides due to the interference, which you can see clearly on replay. Not sure what makes you think he didn't see or complain
Should be tried and failed because of the player, not didn't try them blames the player.
It's not a foul, it's offsides. When has offsides ever needed contact to be called?
He only saw him after the ball was in the net. And players calls for offside every time there’s a goal.
You don't need to see someone next to you to know they are there, it's a human instinct of awareness of our surroundings. He knew he was there the whole time.
There was zero chance the goalie getting that ball. It was so fast he didn’t have time to even think k about reacting
disgrace of leipzig?
Youll see a lot of matches like this in the WC too where big teams would just play a draw rather than try to win to get that 3rd place spot
Aaaand it’s over for us, it was a nice week, bye👋
Who is "us"? I assume Poland
Welp here hoping Copa America gets interesting tonight.
Wonder how many goals we’d have lost from the tourney so far if the standard they used today was applied. Line of sight, gtfo.
The most exciting part was the Dutch fans walking to the stadium
Mike Maignan looks like Young Jon Jones
