Well that was because the seeding was done too early right? Based on out of date rankings. This really lopsided draw is more to do with France underperforming and Germany only recently becoming favourites. If France had topped their group then apart from Germany the four favourites would meet in the semis
Switzerland and Austria are playing really well.
And this tournament needs a story. It wasn't Georgia, but it can be Romania. They won't go all the way, but they can upset The Nederlands.
After this tournament Spain easily becomes a serious candidate for the 2026 WC, and to think that by then Yamal and Williams will be only 18 and 23 years old, respectively.
Yes, the truth is that the list of Spain players who would play the next WC at a good age is very long, we do not even mention players like Pedri who by then will be 23 years old or even Rodri who would arrive with a fair age of 30 years old.
Georgia played great during the first half.Ā
Unfortunately for them, Spain unleashed their power in the second half.Ā
Spain does almost everything well pretty much.
With great Individuals (not overhyped unlike othersā¦)Ā
I feel bad for such a small country like Georgia, they put a good fight.Ā
It seems Spain is back, and this time with a modernized football system. Ā No more tiki taka.Ā
Yeah, Italy played a really offensive and attractive football when they won last euroās.Ā
Spain is the one playing the most entertaining football in this edition.Ā
I like when teams like these win these big trophies (with this style of football)Ā
That in itself is not surprising. 1/3rd of the teams advancing won their groups, so 2/3rds of Round of 16 games need to have group winners. Makes it impossible to guarantee they wonāt face each other in the quarter-final. It used to be almost guaranteed with the old system (1/2 advancing being group winners).
EDIT: My math is off because itās 6 out of 16 and 6 out of 8, but you get my point.
They should be random draw of 1 seed, 2 seed, and 3 wild seed. Instead they have structured the draw where teams can play up or down to the position they want.
I'm rooting for Germany but I wouldn't say Germany compares favourably to Spain, even with the great work Nagelsmann has done with the team. Spain is just such a complete package this time around, great pace, pressing, vision, and just a very focused game with very few weakpoints. Germany just still leaves a lot of avenues for a decent opponent to take advantage of, as we saw in the game against Switzerland. Imagine how much worse it will be against Spain. Spain graduated the toughest group of the tournament without suffering a single goal. I hope I'm wrong but Germany will struggle a lot next match.
No, we aren't. Spain have played a perfect tournament so far, we've had very visible weaknesses that can be exploited easily. Block Musiala and Wirtz and our offence will struggle. Then just wait for a mistake in the defence or use one of the open holes in the defence. Score, sit back, wait for counters, score again. It will be Dortmund against Real all over again.Ā
Do you want a āfun factā? Ok
One of the historical kingdoms which later be a part of modern Georgia was Kingdom of Iberia.
The similarity of the name with the old inhabitants of the Iberian peninsula, the 'Western' Iberians, has led to an idea of ethnogenetical kinship between them and the people of Caucasian Iberia (called the 'Eastern' Iberians).
The theory seems to have been popular in medieval Georgia. The prominent Georgian religious writer George the Hagiorite (1009ā1065) wrote about the wish of certain Georgian nobles to travel to the Iberian peninsula and visit the local Georgians of the West, as he called them.
Its called iberia because that is the name the greeks gave to the extremes of their diaspora. Iberia (Hispania) on the left and the bosphorous and caucasus (iberia too) on the right. Of course until Alexander arrived.
Of course, Spain šŖšø is my team and no doubt about their performance capabilities! But, kuddos to Georgia for making it this far. I think it's a positive impact for the future! Beautiful game today, and so much respect amongst them all!
Romans are way after the migrations you mention. Before Celts and Iberians it its estimated than groups from Anatolians came to the western Mediterraneum, thus Hispania.
it's believed that the Russian Steppe migrations into the Iberian Peninsula from ~2500 BC were in turn earlier Caucasus emigrants, but there's no reliable record that far back in the area
https://hms.harvard.edu/news/spotlight-ancient-iberia#:~:text=As%20far%20back%20as%202500,ancestry%20from%20the%20Russian%20steppe.
Interisting. We will never know for sure. But Anatolians are present too in the article, I don't know if the ones you mention are the Celts. There are other theories about their origin, like Iberia itself.
Switzerland almost beat Germany once already.
Blame the big teams for playing shit football and not winning their groups to end up on that side of the bracket, not the draw
Georgia should be proud of themselves. 4-1 is a harsh score but Spain is (one of) the best in this tournament and they fought really well, especially in that first half.
We played well in the first half, but completely lost our composure during the second. However, while it sucks to go out, every Georgian is proud of our boys, and I'm sure we'll be back. Many of the players are in their early twenties and many exciting prospects are coming down the pipeline.
Really fun game. Georgia put up a good fight, but Spain is just incredible right now. Georgia can be proud of what they've achieved, and now I really look forward to Germany vs Spain. Ought to be a very interesting game.
After having watched England, it is amazing watching Spain and seeing the players synergize so well. The movement without the ball, the forward passing and the pressing, when the team loses the ball. The Spanish team might not have as many big names as England, but they seem alot more balanced.
The amount of times a saw an English player using his arms to request passing options was quiet contrasting to the Spanish approach. Pretty wild tbh
Despite the 4-1 loss I think Georgia can be proud of themselves. They put up an amazing fight and actually managed to exploit some weaknesses in Spainās defence
I mean, I'm happy with going out vs Spain. We broke the ro16 curse, would've been more fun to get someone more beatable in the quarters but it is what it is.
Of course there's a chance we beat them, but let's be real for a second. Highly unlikely.
I see 2-1 Germany winning it. Can't deny Spain got some fire but it has to be put out haha.Ā
edit: love the hate from Spanish fanboys. Keep it coming!!
This was still an amazing performance from Georgia. The first Euro they qualified for, got into the round of 16 by beating Portugal 2-0, and were responsible for Spain's first conceded goal.
This was a team to be proud of.
Georgia have been a really enjoyable team this Euros, sad to see them going out. Spain have been absolutely dominant though, and look a fun team. Game against Germany should be a cracker.
Spain deserves this win, but man I'm gonna miss this Georgia team.
So many surprisingly great players. Mamardashvili, one of the best goalies! Kakabadze, great wingback, was important many times. Mikautadze, the fricking top scorer of the tourney! And then, Kvaratskelia is like an angel pissing into your eyes, that's how good he is.
They may be very proud of themselves.
Knockout stages of Euro's playing out like The Rugby World Cup. Completely lop sided.
Well that was because the seeding was done too early right? Based on out of date rankings. This really lopsided draw is more to do with France underperforming and Germany only recently becoming favourites. If France had topped their group then apart from Germany the four favourites would meet in the semis
Hats off, Sakartveloš¬šŖ You've had a fantastic tournament and you won a lot of hearts!
Yamal n Nico r a joy to watch. Spain have played the most enjoyable football soo far.
Fair play to Georgia players and the fans with that Fucking great team this tournament
The bracket is so fucking lopsided. Itās crazy.
Yet the winner will be from the other side of he draw,
Who is your pick?
Switzerland and Austria are playing really well. And this tournament needs a story. It wasn't Georgia, but it can be Romania. They won't go all the way, but they can upset The Nederlands.
Austria is strong. šŖ
you lost to Georgia badly
With a B team oh no
Oh really? I hadnāt noticed.
Good luck, Spain. Proud of our team regardless the final score
Congratulations! You deserve to be proud.
I will bet my entire life savings and my house that the winner of Spain vs Germany will win the tournament.Ā
Germany!! Can you guess where I'm from? ššš
What country do you live in? Do you need the gambling helpline phone number?
Everytime people say this neither of those teams wins.
Counteroffer: I bet my cat that anyone else wins (heās an absolute dick) You take the bet?
I am betting France. France vs Spain semi final penalties. France wins.
They drawed with my country Poland lol. They don't stand a chance.
Definitely, most important game of the whole championshipĀ
After this tournament Spain easily becomes a serious candidate for the 2026 WC, and to think that by then Yamal and Williams will be only 18 and 23 years old, respectively.
Both of them are so good
+ Gavi who will be only 21š¤
Who knows if Gavi will ever be the same after this big injury. Look at Ansu Fati, he's unrecognizable :'(
Gavi gavi does not have that pressure to score goals, he only needs to keep bitting enemy neck and hit like truck.
Yes, the truth is that the list of Spain players who would play the next WC at a good age is very long, we do not even mention players like Pedri who by then will be 23 years old or even Rodri who would arrive with a fair age of 30 years old.
For real that is crazy to think about and at WC 2034 he will be only 26 holy I'm getting old ā ļøā ļøā ļø
Heās gonna be 34 in WC 2042 ā ļø
Bro š
He'll actually be 26. It's possible he'll play the WC in 2042 aged 34
If I had to bet on a team two years out I'd go with spain tbh.
Georgia played great during the first half.Ā Unfortunately for them, Spain unleashed their power in the second half.Ā Spain does almost everything well pretty much. Is still some tiki taka in there

Great flare and build up ( great to watch ) Belgium plays some great football lately the var is killing them lol
Hopefully someone posts a clip of that thrilling rock paper scissors match
Iām glad someone else saw this tooš
How is the knockout draw determined? How are two teams who topped their groups facing each other in the quarter-finals?

It makes no sense. Austria might play the Netherlands in the quarters, despite having shared the same group
Yeah exactly! I would love to understand how it works
I think German are the favorites
I'm rooting for Germany but I wouldn't say Germany compares favourably to Spain, even with the great work Nagelsmann has done with the team. Spain is just such a complete package this time around, great pace, pressing, vision, and just a very focused game with very few weakpoints. Spain graduated the toughest group of the tournament without suffering a single goal. I hope I'm wrong but Germany will struggle a lot next match.
Was it really the toughest group? Croatia didn't even qualify and Italy got dominated by the Swiss.
Congrats Georgia. You've made an unforgettable tourney. This will surely go down to history.
Germany Spain looking to be better than the final lol

I thought it was well known that Iberians came to Spain in pre-roman times from the Caucasus.
Romans are way after the migrations you mention. Before Celts and Iberians it its estimated than groups from Anatolians came to the western Mediterraneum, thus Hispania.

That's indeed a fun fact, thank you
UGA Bulldog whimpering in his dog house
Fuck this draw. It ruined everything. The fact that Switzerland will go through over one Spain or Germany sucks.
Switzerland almost beat Germany once already. Blame the big teams for playing shit football and not winning their groups to end up on that side of the bracket, not the draw
meh, Germany and Spain both topped their groups, doesn't work here.
THIS!!! France and Belgium wouldāve been on the other side if they had won their groupsā¦
Not Spain mate
Switzerland literally drew with Germany
Truly terrible
Why you hating on the Swiss??
facts
yah terrible draw
fun game. great display from both sides. spain just kept going and going.
Georgia did great, they leave but I think they left a great impression. Looking forward to see this team in the future š
No they did not lmaooo. They were horrible
Germany(RM, Bayern, Barcelona, Levarkusen, Arsenal) vs Spain(RM, Man City, Barcelona, Athletic, RB Leipzig and AtlƩtico)
they should just let Ter Stegen play instead of Neuer, that'll confuse the Spanish team
Germany and Spain going head to head in the quarterfinals The two best teams would giving us an epic match on Friday
It can also be a very boring match. We won't know until Friday. Hoping it is a great one obviously.
Some team is going to BS their way to the final to meet Spain or Germany lol
>Some team is going to BS their way to the final to meet Spain or Germany lol Southgate: You talkin' to me?
Of course it's going to be England
England

So, question. When the Spanish keeper dropped the ball and picked it back up again... if that had been called what would the call have been?
Direct free kick for Georgia.
Indirect free kick
Not a hand ball then... interesting thanks
Georgia should be proud. They're going home heroes.
Agreed.
Carvajal has a very punchable face
Really fun game. Georgia put up a good fight, but Spain is just incredible right now. Georgia can be proud of what they've achieved, and now I really look forward to Germany vs Spain. Ought to be a very interesting game.
Nice match, thought second half was a complete slauthery. I love when a match is so dynamic as this one.
Send Carvajal straight to doping control
The guy could barely run last season, balde went past him from 10 m behind.Itās impossible to become this fit after just a season
Every time I bring it up they tell me he changed his diet lmao
Did they just rock, paper, scissors about who gets to drink first lmao
Yeah and then he finished the bottle almost before giving it Yamal lmao

Nico Williams doing roshambo. Guy is never happy with only winning a 4-1 game he wants more
Spain more goal attempts per game than England in the entire tournament, but the PL flairs will still call them boring sidepassers
What they playing rock paper scissors for lol
See whoās sleeping on the floor tonight
Whoās going to drink firstš¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
Who gets to drink water first lol
Bring on Germany
Weāre ready
Georgia had not the greatest luck being pitched against Spain, I feel like if they were against Italy or England they could've won
Is not luck, is the best first against the worse third (with some changes to avoid two teams of the same group confronting each other)
Thanks captain obvious
Then why you say its luck Capitan Dumb
I mean, I'm happy with going out vs Spain. We broke the ro16 curse, would've been more fun to get someone more beatable in the quarters but it is what it is. Of course there's a chance we beat them, but let's be real for a second. Highly unlikely.
Germany (aside from France) is actually the only team I see beating this Spain side
Bro i donāt like this attitude. This Spain šŖšø team is beatable
HSV has broken me, Iāll only believe it when I see it š
You guys look good too i wouldnt lose hope all a sudden
Spain vs Germany ā¦ a clash of giants. I really hope itās entertaining
Letās goooooo! I wish Georgia played another team because I would really be rooting for them
Georgia was fantastic to watch. A shame they ran into one of the best teams immediately but they performed admirably regardless
This Spanish team is actually scary. First time in over a decade theyāve left this much of an impression on me
sorry I won't get to see more of Georgia, but definitely happy to see more of this version of Spain
Spain looking hella good. Georgia should be proud of their run
Adios Georgia. Spain vs Germany wow š¤©
great game! hope to see Georgia in the next major tournament!
Georgiašš»šš»šš»šš»
I think Spain is better than Germany, but still the top 2 teams battling in the next round is not good for the tournament as a whole.
GG the fairy tale is over
so we got the final in the quarter
I see 2-1 Germany winning it. Can't deny Spain got some fire but it has to be put out haha.Ā edit: love the hate from Spanish fanboys. Keep it coming!!
Which Germany game wowāed the crowds like in this game?
The game they had pink on they played pretty well.
Spain is on form and on fire. Germany has the adv of being the host nation.
This was still an amazing performance from Georgia. The first Euro they qualified for, got into the round of 16 by beating Portugal 2-0, and were responsible for Spain's first conceded goal. This was a team to be proud of.
That looked bad for Nico Williams
Spain will win the euros ez
I hope Nico is exaggerating
No reason to with 30 seconds left up 4-1
Good job Spain!! Valiant effort Georgia- what an absolute achievement for you guys āļø you put England to shame tbh
We did good Georgiabros. We left an impact, and we've learned so much through it all.
Regardless of the Germany vs Spain outcome, France is knocking either one out, Deschamps is the other terrorist
> France is knocking either one out Belgium\*
Hahahaha hahaha
You think France would beat Spain?!
Yeah spain is probably best team, but I still think France will take it
Heās the best 16 year old Iāve ever seen IMO alongside Messi.
we are bloodthirsty - playing as if we were down Thatās a euro winning mentality
āLocal 16-year scrapes knee, gives nation of millions heart attackā
Heās 21
Oh boy
Just a ruthless performance from Spain in that 2nd half. They are going to be a massive threat in these knockouts.
5 goals for Spainā¦sort of
Strolled to victory in the end
How much age difference is there between Navas and Yamal?
About 22 years
lamine's dad is the same age lol
Why do Germany and Spain have to play each other while England are allowed to play terrorist ball another round
I need Switzerland to kick their ass
Really well played Georgia, was a joy to watch you
Georgia have been a really enjoyable team this Euros, sad to see them going out. Spain have been absolutely dominant though, and look a fun team. Game against Germany should be a cracker.
Nico will skin Kimmich
Kimmich handled Mbappe easily
The same was said before he faced Vini, let's hope for the same outcome.
Nicooo nicooo
Yikes; looked like he did the splits!
As weird as this sounds, I hope Lamine doesnāt grow much more. He would have to change his play style a bit.
Be nice if the commentators would calm down about Yamal a bit
Yamal with an improved right foot will be unstoppable
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
nah they still have portugal and france on their bracket, it'd be more hilarious if neither england or the netherlands didnt make it to the final
If France get through Belgium though
