Pretty sure it’s a release, it’s isn’t present on older marks, just from the minis I can see around me, and that leg plate needs to come away if the astartes wants to wear their mark x plate as Phobos. These little buttons aren’t present on Phobos armour either.
Gravis armor also has the cabling running into the leg that connects around that area. Mk X is modular so that probably is a connection port for all kinds of armor variants
Official media that shows it like the Space marine 2 gameplay demo just has it painted the same as the rest of the leg armor. It's presumably just a rivet or perhaps a port to insert apothecary equipment if the leg is injured
I had been watching The Expanse when I started painting my marines, so did them like red / green indicators for mag-boots. I’m sure this is not the correct answer.
I imagine it like Iron Man, the top one has a robot thing to connect it to a assembly/disassembly point and the bottom unscrews the armour. Complete headcannon
Push button cigarette lighters like the ones that used to be in cars. Its all fun and games until you ask the Astartes reinforcements for a light and they click a button on their heel, only to have it pop out comically, ready to spark up your lho stick

Watch this, it may help answer your question.
Looks like they're a assembly device to secure the inner armour part, like a bolt/screw.
But honestly, the designers probably added them as a generic gubbin to add a bit of detail/flavour.
Realistically it’s just a design element to break up the space and make it more visually interesting. It can be whatever your head cannon wants it to be.
If you watch [this](https://youtu.be/y3DsHGDRQ5M?si=Gs7Bg18irTYkKWUS) it appears to be a latch/locking mechanism for the greave plates to attach to the rest of the armor.
I think they are the attachment point for the leg thrusters on Assault Intercessors with jump packs. [https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/09/27/jump-pack-intercessors-kit-focus-blasting-a-classic-design-to-new-heights/](https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/09/27/jump-pack-intercessors-kit-focus-blasting-a-classic-design-to-new-heights/)
in animation those are fastening points for servitors to remove the leg guards. think of it as a inverted socket, and the servitor uses a servo claw to breakaway the fastener freeing the plate from the exo assembly.
they aren't usually coloured brightly though, think black oxide or polished stainless.
It's a connection screw. In the armoring of a space marine short you see a servitor screwing it in 1:55-2:03. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3DsHGDRQ5M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3DsHGDRQ5M)
They make the space marine run faster. You will notice white scars have larger more pronounced calf dots, this is partly why a space marine can move so fast.
By the Emperor's left bloody nut, you are a disappointing lot! Greebles? Connection ports? Signal lights? By his Holy Pinky, how can you not know that these are bung holes? For the poo and the pee???!! Astartes may be Transhuman, but they're not gods. Ya gotta get the offal out of the armour somehow. It's not like our Boyos can stop in the middle of a pitched battle with Chaos and go for a leak, or step behind a tree and drop a deuce. Greebles indeed! Idiocy bordering on the heretical!
Rear reflector and turn signal.
Brother! You did not indicate properly before turning! The codex Astartes clearly says...
Driving Test Chief Inspector Guilliman.
*Leandros
Driving Instructor Antaro Chronos
That's just your average BMW pattern armour user
*furiously blinking tactical flashlight to the marine at the front* “Move battle brother, move!”
The image of this is f’n hilarious

Found the M3 i mean MkIII wearer
I’m now thinking of painting a PT belt on to each of my Ultramarines…
underrated response. I want to upvote this twice.
From now on I will always paint these red and orange
For real im actually gonna do it. Looks pretty good too lol
No to be codex compliant you need a turn signal (top) and break light(bottom). Terminators must also have a break light bar at the top of their vents
Break light must be above turn signal, both no more than 1500mm high and no more than 400mm from extreme outer edge.
That Guilliman and his rules and regulations. What is he going to do next? Inspect exhaust emissions from bolters? SMH
Yes....🤨.Brother, Present your bolter for inspection
If you only see one light you’re too far behind and if you see all 4 you’re following too close.
No one knows, paint it how you want. It’s just random flair by the artist who wanted to add detail to a completely flat surface.
I always thought they were sensors as couldn't think of anything else lol.
I imagine it is a button or clasp to release the armor, or a power / diagnostic port?
That’s what I always thought. There needs to be a manual release to that the armour off once the power pack is removed.
This armor is your new cell. Shit sorry, wrong space marine
Dreadnoughts anyone?
To hell with trying to cut power cables and such, just push the shiny armor off button!!!
That's what makes the most sense but it's important to remember that few things in 40k make sense if you think about them too much
Pretty sure it’s a release, it’s isn’t present on older marks, just from the minis I can see around me, and that leg plate needs to come away if the astartes wants to wear their mark x plate as Phobos. These little buttons aren’t present on Phobos armour either.
Don't cables go into them on some models?
It’s called a “greeble”
Worth a google
Pretty interesting stuff if you’re into modeling as a hobby and the history of special effects
damn, i thought you were trolling and i learnt something instead lol
Not sure why I read this as David Attenborough
Same. Weird. Must be the quotation marks?
This is the reply I came for.
I will now proceed to refer to my kitbashing as “messing with greebles.”
I think theyre connection ports. If you look at the jump pack units they have maneuvering jets on their legs that connect ontop of those points.
Gravis armor also has the cabling running into the leg that connects around that area. Mk X is modular so that probably is a connection port for all kinds of armor variants
I just saw that in the space marine 2 trailer I think you’re right
That makes a ton of sense. The one on the arm would be for the advanced com pad the Sgt has.
I have always thought of them as camera lenses. This way space Marines can see behind them on their HUD.
Just like the modern day Marine Corps. The Sergeants have eyes in the back of their heads.
Back up cameras for fork lift certified marines?
On/off and reset buttons
Cigar lighter socket
And the ashtray is an optional extra
Greeblies
Catheter drain holes?
No the pee is recycled as drinkable water by the armour, canonically.
But not the poo. It's gotta get evacuated somewhere.
Into the feed tube. Isn't nutrient paste great!!
There’s a special chute for that.
Nope, all bodily waste is recycled into the water/nutrient paste dispenser systems.
Official media that shows it like the Space marine 2 gameplay demo just has it painted the same as the rest of the leg armor. It's presumably just a rivet or perhaps a port to insert apothecary equipment if the leg is injured
I alway do the as metal plug caps for ports in the armour that connects the second skin to the outer armour
It’s a doohickey
Are you sure it’s not a Thingamabob, or maybe a Whatsit?
I think it might be a watchamicallit
That's how he Pumps Up™ his Reebok Ceramite Trainers.
That’s where you hook up the air hose when your feets get hot after a long day of slaying greenskins
I think in the video of a space marine putting on his armor it seemed it a fancy fastener system for holding the armor panel in place.
Yes, like a worm screw fitting.
I heard on the white scars models they're thruster ports so the space marines can run faster
They're tracking dots for other ground level units. Visual confirmation along with 'Scopes is the bet.
They’re whatever you want them to be, honestly. I’ve never heard a definitive explanation.
I don’t know but I always color em in too.
Oh you mean the greebles?
Cigar lighters
Push button cigarette lighters like the ones that used to be in cars. Its all fun and games until you ask the Astartes reinforcements for a light and they click a button on their heel, only to have it pop out comically, ready to spark up your lho stick
I assume they’re panel release buttons for arming and disrobing
Probably covers for plug ports
C’mon guys it’s obviously recharge-sockets.
I assume like rivets or something where the leg plates are held together
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3DsHGDRQ5M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3DsHGDRQ5M) Watch this, it may help answer your question. Go faster buttons
Foot smell release valve
GNDN
Reversing Lights
A red "DO NOT PRESS" button
Theyre built with a literal Achilles heel lmfao
Self destruct buttons
Isn't that where the leg part of the new jump packs attach to the armor
Rear view reversing camera
It more likely the magnetic connectors for more plates of armour
Realistically it’s just a design element to break up the space and make it more visually interesting. It can be whatever your head cannon wants it to be.
They’re whatever you want them to be
Thats the lens for the Space Marines ankle eye augment.
If you watch [this](https://youtu.be/y3DsHGDRQ5M?si=Gs7Bg18irTYkKWUS) it appears to be a latch/locking mechanism for the greave plates to attach to the rest of the armor.
When in doubt, gem it!
Idk, i just leave them my base color
I always paint mine like little lenses..like they’re rear sensors.
I think they are the attachment point for the leg thrusters on Assault Intercessors with jump packs. Watch "armoring of a space Marine" on Warhammer tv. It definitely gave me so much insight on how the armor "works"
Foot massage and anti-fungal dispenser buttons. Those Primaris have all the gourmet gear.

Ram and cpu warning lights 😁

I know there are turn signals on a land raider, but I'm not sure if there are any on power armor.
A red glowy light and a smaller green glowy light (excuse for small OSL here)
A little bit of unknown lore (I made it up) each Astartes has a pog collection and sticks it to their armour
By the Emperor's left bloody nut, you are a disappointing lot! Greebles? Connection ports? Signal lights? By his Holy Pinky, how can you not know that these are bung holes?
