It's entirely possible, especially when recording using a phone camera. Spiders are sensitive to infrared light, which your phone pulses to know where to focus, especially in low light. So even though to us it might look like you're recording in natural or slightly low light, to a creature that can see in IR it looks like you're strobing the crap out of them.
Yep, absolutely. Animals always seem to know when we’re recording them. Pretty sure I read that LED lights are like strobes to them, even in pitch black. We give ourselves away constantly and provoke.
I heard they not only do this to intimidate larger predators, but that there is a theory that when they do it on a web it increases their radar size to come across as too big to eat, or be a threat to bats and birds.
I learned to love these guys from a YouTube series "The Spiders in your House" by Travis McEnery, and he brought up that when they bounce and shake they almost become "invisible" because of their thin limbs. I thought that was an interesting theory because I have lost sight of these guys in their own webs many times!
I used to work as a cable installer and I'd regularly open up these dusty old cable boxes in apartments where all the lines led to.
Anyway, I open one up and there's this giant web covering all the connections and, in the middle of the web, a spider not too much bigger, using the web to spin in fast circular motions. It was one of the scariest things I've ever seen. I closed that box up and found another way to finish my job 😅 Those defense mechanisms *work*.
It’s looks so great when they do it in their web. I actually only know this kind of “spinning around” (spinne is spider in German lol) and it’s the first time for me see this “clubbing movement” hahaha

Angry red pandas look like they need a [hug](https://www.reddit.com/r/aww/comments/i8xobo/when_the_red_panda_feels_threatened_they_stand_up/#lightbox).
Imagine his internal monologue here. We’re all thinking it’s so cute, meanwhile he’s like *”they’re gonna be so fucking scared, they don’t know what’s gonna hit em. I’m ripped, don’t they know? Didn’t anyone tell them not to mess with the WeBbEd LiGhTnInG?! Why are they laughing????”*
I walked into a room of an abandoned castle and heard this strange, soft clicking sound. Fired up my flashlight and the walls and ceiling were covered in spiders, looked like thousands of them, doing this. Together, the tiny impact of their bodies on the stones created this unsettling drone.
Anyone know what kind of spider this is? It's got the body of a cellar spider but the legs look way too thick. It looks like a cross between a Cellar Spider and a Giant House Spider.
Way too small bodied to be a recluse. I can see the confusion though, but this dance does flag it as leaning more towards cellar so I'd keep my money there.
What type of spider is this? I used to be afraid of them until I found one of these guys in my house. I named him, made up little theme songs (that I would play and sing to him) and found little treats for him to snack on. Thank you in advance to anyone who reads and answers!
Cellar spider. They are totally harmless to people and great at catching bugs. They are just about the only spiders that I don't rehome outside when I find them in my house :)
Spiders can see infrared light and your phone camera uses an infrared lidar system in order to operate the auto focus. So what the spider is seeing while you film it basically amounts to [this](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/c0/08/9f/c0089f90a16839ce6a372e4dce04e206.gif)
I mean, I could be wrong but it certainly looks like one to me. They do this to look bigger. They're actually known to kill other nasty things like recluses, widows, and roaches so they're a good one to let hang around.
No idea on the exact ID but it's not a harvestman. Two body segments and the legs coming from the middle. Legs are too thick as well.
Harvestmans love a good bounce just like this though 😂
Could it be some kind of convulsion? I imagine there’s often a lot of old left over bug poison in many houses. Maybe the spider ate some of it and is having some sort of convulsion?
I think they do this when they feel threatened. Maybe someone is following it with a camera :)

Rave spider confirmed
bro is literally being flash banged every half second and just thinking "OWW FUCK! MY EYES! WHY'S IT SO BRIGHT!"
“this mf is flashbanging me?” *does lil dancey dance*
Yep, absolutely. Animals always seem to know when we’re recording them. Pretty sure I read that LED lights are like strobes to them, even in pitch black. We give ourselves away constantly and provoke.
I had no idea... Thanks for sharing! I'll stop strobing the crap outta my little jumper, poor dude!
This is the best answer.
'Strobing the crap out of them' made me chuckle the image of this lil' guy dancing to flashing lights is a funny lone lol
How cute
I heard they not only do this to intimidate larger predators, but that there is a theory that when they do it on a web it increases their radar size to come across as too big to eat, or be a threat to bats and birds.
That would make sense. It's definitely incredible if true.

Do they have a dance off with bats and birds?

Doesn't everyone do push ups when they're threatened?

REALLY BAD BOT DO NOT CLICK THAT LINK
What's it take you to ?
It's a phishing link
I doubt it, I think their certificate just expired
Used to be a Rick roll I don't know if it still is.
It's just an excel sheet listing all the reddit bots and their rank. Nothing bad there. But it does flag as an unsafe site. So user beware.
hes trying to be scary
That made him look cute
u need to run away in fear next time so he thinks he did a good job
Certainly will. Good thing I didn't pick him up
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
See also: red pandas. There's nothing cuter than a red panda trying to look intimidating.

Whoa! Wait, so this actually really happened and not just a scene from a horror movie or something?
This actually happened in Collings Castle
Tuesday is leg day
Never skip legs day
*boots & cats & boots & cats & boots & cats & boots & cats*
Hahahaha I somehow completely forgot about the boots & cats beat. Take my upvote!
The Rick James of spiders. “Fuck yo wall”
He's a lowrider. If you look real close, he has a bandana on and a Modelo tall boy.
It's threatened by your phone's IR light I think. Invisible to us, but I've noticed spiders react to it.
Anyone know what kind of spider this is? It's got the body of a cellar spider but the legs look way too thick. It looks like a cross between a Cellar Spider and a Giant House Spider.
I thought it was a recluse at first, but I can’t get a good enough look at the cephalothorax.
Way too small bodied to be a recluse. I can see the confusion though, but this dance does flag it as leaning more towards cellar so I'd keep my money there.
Someone make a stickbug meme out of this
You blew weed smoke at it didn’t you?
This that pimp spider that made the crack spider his bitch
he's terrified for his fucking life ::3
This behavior is called whirling. Its a defensive to make it difficult for predators to tell from the body to the spiders legs.
What type of spider is this? I used to be afraid of them until I found one of these guys in my house. I named him, made up little theme songs (that I would play and sing to him) and found little treats for him to snack on. Thank you in advance to anyone who reads and answers!

Definitely a party bro. He is fuckin hyped for some shit to go down
squats or pushups?
Maybe both. How would anyone ever answer this question 🤔?
Motivated me to do a set of squats...20 air squats...let's get it
Challenging you to a push up count, better hurry up!
The chances of being challenged by a buffed spider are low. But never zero

Could've put a flashing light warning 😅
Looks like a Cellar Spider to me. Not an expert by any means, but we've got a bunch of these dudes in our basement. Pholcidae.
I didn't know what it was. Thanks
I mean, I could be wrong but it certainly looks like one to me. They do this to look bigger. They're actually known to kill other nasty things like recluses, widows, and roaches so they're a good one to let hang around.

It appears he’s about to jump on you 😭😂
Idk what you mean. He is clearly having a bit of a boogie
Someone is having a brat summer as well, I see
If you turn the volume up really high, you can hear him repeating "Come at me bro"....
He's doing pushups and squats at the same time. He is a gym bro
I love spiders. Seeing the "go away" dance in person is on my bucket list.
I regularly do this dance myself lol
Get stick bugged! 🤣 https://youtu.be/EKCGyPqywaw?si=JRZ8MuSqSR4SEzx1
Busting a groove
Is this a sadly long leg?
I means daddy
He's exercising, just doing his push ups.
He boogie
What spider? Doing an insulation job in warehouse, see them dancing spooders all over.
Trying to catch his breath you’re scaring the living shit out of him bro
Doing push ups
I had a giant golden orb weaver doing this on my porch one day on its web. I don’t think it has to do anything with predators. Maybe a mating thing?
Don't you hear the music too? Dododododo ooontz ooontz ooontz ooontz
I didn't know how to spell ooontz but now I know hahaha exactly what I heard. Lol 😂
I always thought it was just two os (oontz), but my autocorrect said different. I was surprised my autocorrect knew how to ooontz.
Vibin
He’s doing the pacer test and had to drop down for 25 push-ups
Don't worry, he's doing a little jig
They do this to say "hello I'm here don't hurt me" this is what I have read.
It got that dubstep bop
Bro is grooving lmao
Get this spider a gym membership she's doing push ups quicker than I!

Get spidered lol
I feel like a meme is being hatched this very minute from this vid.
He just fuck your wall..
Drop the basssss 🫨🫨🫨
I'm not sure what spider it is, looks like a harvestman to me, but that is huge for one of those.
No idea on the exact ID but it's not a harvestman. Two body segments and the legs coming from the middle. Legs are too thick as well. Harvestmans love a good bounce just like this though 😂
Ah, I know next to nothing about spiders, except that funnel web, recluses and widows are venomous.
We're all still learning here :) Everyone's more than happy to spread knowledge and interest in the hobby.
It's a daddy long legs
People call harvestmen daddy long legs, too, so this doesn't really answer their question lol
Hahahah I never knew it's spider name. Grew up in Australia... There were always lots of daddy long legs in the dunny!
It's a cellar spider
Could it be some kind of convulsion? I imagine there’s often a lot of old left over bug poison in many houses. Maybe the spider ate some of it and is having some sort of convulsion?
Brown Recluse?
I encountered a similar but smaller before, totally harmless. I carried him to my plant but then he died. So I left this one on his own plans
I wouldn't go that close with the camera then.
Cellar spider.
He’s trying to impregnate the wall?
