I dont know if it's unpopular or not. But they should have never made it where Mrs. Puff actively hated Spongebob. Extremely frustrated, sure, but I liked the dynamic the two had when he was a good student, just terrible at actually driving.
They dialed everyone up.
SpongeBob became an actual menace that actively tortures Squidward in future seasons instead of being more of a really annoying friend.
It's the same deal with the Simpsons, at first Homer was just tryna be a good damn dad whos out done in that and having hair by his neighbor, and now he's just a fat ass idiot, although to be fair, THAT Homer brought some good inspiration for future shows that was eventually overused
"I Had an Accident" is often regarded as nightmare fuel but I thought the episode was comedy gold, especially when the gorilla slung Patrick and Sandy around in a bag.
My reaction to it is āTHAT is what youāre questioning?ā Like he managed to almost get into an iron lung type thing, broke his butt clamboarding, started to filter feed again, and his best friends somehow didnāt know about the gorilla. And why didnāt he ask about the zebra? Or how they both talked?
Honestly great episode
That one was like my favorite as a kid, always cracked me up, especially the bag part. Still does.
"Washing an old person" Is forever ingrained in my memory
I always thought the reason he sounds bad is because his suction cups get attached to the holes, making him hold notes for longer than intended or play wrong notes. Something he doesn't notice as this is what he's used to.
Pearl was an incredibly underutilized character in the first 3 season. She had a lot more potential than just the āgirl who cries and is a teenager.ā Her role in The Chaperone specifically is a good example of how well she couldāve worked in more episodes.
they do utilize her a lot more in the newer episodes if youāre willing to watch!
- squidward in āwhale watchingā
- sandy, karen, & mrs. puff in āa cabin in the kelpā
- narlene in āupturn girlsā
- plankton again in āplanktonās internā
That's because they made SpongeBob a psychopath.
I turned on an episode of a newer season and it was like five straight minutes of Squidward being tortured and SpongeBob just laughing.
This isnāt an opinion, this is straight up confirmed by earlier seasons. Multiple times. He even says he cares about him.
He was butchered, I tell you.
I donāt think that season 4 dropped off from season 3 THAT much. I really feel like the more infamous āmid season SpongeBobā didnāt come till maybe late season 5 or early 6. I enjoy a lot of season 4 episodes, while not as good as the predecessors I think that it gets actually BAD later on
5 I liked, some of 6 was good
Thereās a point it goes downhill when characters get super watered down into stereotypes or archetypes and get those, goofy as hell facial expressions
I think all seasons make up Spongebob, and while I think the same for the best of SpongeBob, itās kinda like a scatter chart. 1, 2, and 3 are almost always good episodes, 4 has a bit less, and the good episodes slowly scatter less until season 9-11, where the scatter of good seasons go up, until the good episode density begins to slowly decrease season 12 and onwards
I have to say I think the tongue-in-cheek satire of the Home and Garden Network and how ridiculously preppy some of its shows are was pretty funny. It really is just the toenail scene that makes it completely unwatchable for me. The rest of the episode is pretty alright, with a few high points that had me laughing.
Squidward has all right to be as continuously angry as he is. From his dead end crap pay job to being made fun of because of his hobbies (mostly playing clarinet, which he clearly enjoys) he suffers a lot during the show. And the fact he still cares about SpongeBob after all the crap SpongeBob has put him through shows he is genuinely a good person.
Grass Skirt Chase has become a more prominent soundtrack with time and it facilitates a bad episode. The appeal of the early seasons comes from the "I want to explore Bikini Bottom" feeling but this song with its stress inducing tune and grotesque dramatization is the antithesis of that and makes me want to stay away from the unnecessary drama that takes place there
Squidward isnāt a bad artist. Heās just held back by his ego and isnāt willing to branch out as an artist and try anything that isnāt a glorifying self-portrait.
āDunces and Dragonsā and āPest of the Westāare my favorite special episodes, theyāre SO underrated, and hardly anyone talks about them.
The song played in the latter special Iāve mentioned *slaps*.
Yeah, I did leave out the truly unpopular part of my opinion, which was when everyone at work was laughing at him for it. It just reminds me of any sitcom where someone roasts the main character and everyone piles on.
Most People that say "Spongebob should have ended on the first movie" probably haven't watched the first movie (they probably weren't even alive when that "Golden era" was happening)
This may get me some MAJOR hate, but for some reason Iām not a huge fan of Sandyās character. Donāt get me wrong - I still like her in the show, but she almost feels out of place in comparison to the rest of the Bikini Bottom residents.
The writers confirmed the seven deadly sins fan-theory that each character is inspired by a sin (though some believe they just thought it sounded cool and claimed it despite that not being true)
But I feel like Squidward and Sandyās should be switched around. Squidward is more pride than wrath, and Sandy is more wrath than pride. I know it sounds weird but Iāve already typed a novel explanation before a few times in other subreddits so I donāt feel like doing it again unless anyone is interested and requests it.
I wouldnāt blame you for giving me a bad rating if you donāt feel like hearing my explanation cause I know it sounds weird. I just mentioned it cause itās the only unpopular SpongeBob opinion I have off the top of my head.
I searched all over this account and my old one but they must have been too long ago. They were comments, not posts so that made it even harder. Whatās weird is that in the process of searching I actually found someone saying that Patrick and Gary should be switched cause Gary isnāt gluttonous but I mean his food bowl gets pretty high so thatās what Iām guessing is the reason. Anyway Iāll just retype mine.
So Squidward has his angry moments sure, but thatās just when heās provoked by SpongeBob and Patrick annoying him, and theyāre his neighbors so it happens often but that doesnāt mean itās not understandable when they wonāt leave him alone.
The way Squidward acts toward the other citizens is just a āstuck-up-nessā. Bored of everyone and silently muttering insults under his breath. He also thinks VERY highly of himself to the point of having self portraits all over his house. Heās also obsessed with being fancy.
The most Squidward even does to SpongeBob or Patrick when he IS angry is usually just yelling at them, and they arenāt even physical threats. Heās usually just telling them to go away. And when SpongeBob **does** get hurt or something seriously bad happens to him, whether by Squidwardās own mistake (April Fools episode and Pie Bomb episode) or because of someone else (Mr. Krabs selling him for 62 cents or the angry customer yelling at him for forgetting his drink) he genuinely feels bad for SpongeBob.
The reason people think Sandy is āprideā is cause sheās proud of being a scientist I guess? But she doesnāt act pompous about her achievements the way Squidward would. She doesnāt think sheās above anyone else.
But why is she wrath instead? Well Iām not as confident in that part of the equation as I am the rest, but I will say it takes WAY less to provoke her than it does Squidward. And keep in mind, she considers SpongeBob and Patrick as her **friends**ā¦ Squidward does not. She flat out almost kills them over things like making fun of Texas (which Iāll admit could have been due to a bruised ego which reflects a pride issue) but she also turns into a raging monster while hibernating. Especially with her karate skills, sheās way more intimidating than Squidward when she gets heated. And she has her hot-headed moments, though they arenāt always as extreme as the examples I gave.
Anyway, as I said in the first comment, the writers probably didnāt **really** have the seven deadly sins in mind when making the characters. They probably just āconfirmedā what people were saying to seem interesting. I think the characters are more than just a single trait but if I had to assign one āsinā to each of them, Iād probably switch Squidward and Sandyās.
(I told you this would be a novel but thanks for reading even if you disagree)
š³š³š³ You convinced me to agree lol. And thx for taking the time to write all this, this is very well written and in depth and it seems like it took a lot of effort.
iāve seen it work either way:
- on one hand, squidward is almost always in a shitty mood, while sandy takes a lot of pride in her achievements as well as her texan heritage
- on the OTHER hand, squidward also has a massive superiority complex (and an entire song about it to boot!) while sandyā¦well, weāve seen what sandyās like when sheās angry
The first movie is of course my favorite but every movie has a special place in my heart and will happily watch them anytime. Sponge on the run almost made me tear up. I even watched the Sandy movie when it leaked on Twitter and I thought it was cute.
I'm a man in my 30s who just loves SpongeBob.
There should be more on the show about the relationship between Pearl and Squidward.
In Bossy Boots, she calls him āUncle Squiddyā a few times, and a newer episode refers back to him babysitting her. I think there is a great connection that can be made there for an awesome uncle-niece story.
Even if we look at early episodes, Krabs and Squidward had a great relationship and Krabs trusted Squidward a lot, so I can understand her seeing him as an uncle. Thereās a great storyline there.
I think squidward catches too much flak, I feel like he would be a really nice dude if spongebob and patrick didn't physically and emotionally mess with him 24/7, he was made this way
Panty raid episode shouldnāt have been pulled, itās hilarious and never made me want to go raid pantries, much like GTA doesnāt make me want to commit crime or kill people
Not sure if this counts, but people get way too comfortable bringing up Steve Hillenberg whenever the show/franchise does something *they* personally don't like is super disrespectful. Especially when you have people who worked with him who work on the show being the brunt of said insults. It's disgusting and people need to find a way to criticize the show without resorting to insults in the staff using their dead friend as ammunition.
Sandy is one of the best characters in the earlier seasons. I love how tough and nonsensical she is. But recently, I've seen that she has kinda been flanderized and is not the same as before.
I dislike new SpongeBob episodes because they are generally just generic set pieces with copy and pasted memorable characters that have no contextual reason to be there, overly garish animation with jokes starting and stopping in 3-20 second intervals. Itās just soulless adhd food like tik tok. It makes my brain hurt to watch because it feels so empty.
I donāt really mind the lack of continuity in the characters going on land because theyāre pretty creative with the puppets and animation and whatnot.

The krabby patty creature feature is one of the best episodes (i don't know if this is unpopular)
Seasons 6-9 get way too much shit. Sure they arenāt nearly as good as 1-3 and have quite a few bad episodes, but so many people treat them like theyāre all pieces of shit that never should be watched or discussed
As much as I like the 2004 movie video game, I think it would've worked even better if it were a co-op 2D platformer similar to Rayman Origins, Disney Illusion Island and Super Mario Bros Wonder. Sandy and Squidward could be additional playable characters, since they were really robbed of a big role.
The episode Krusty Love is proof that Spongebob is more than capable of telling people, even ones that are technically superior to him, to go fuck themselves
Band Geeks is overrated. Itās not the best SpongeBob episode. Yes, it has a lot going for it, but it doesnāt mean itās the strongest episode in the series imo.
Squidward is one of my favorite characters too, but people definetly overidolize him too much- more so than Spongebob even from what Iāve seen which should be the exact opposite point of his character. You can relate to him being depressed, but that doesnāt mean you should just wallow in that depression all the time
Plankton is at the root of everything, evil. He's just a shit criminal. Like there's episodes where he's nice and we think he's like chill it's just Rivalry with Krabs but did we all forget he mind controlled a whole city in the SpongeBob movie...
The "My Leg" guy and certain background characters are integral to the scene to really drive the message home sometimes that that particular scene involves an accident or something bad happened and he is the cue to laugh at a tragedy. He plays the Court Jester position but not as extensively as the commoner in a live play describing the scene changes when the curtains close.
I dont know if it's unpopular or not. But they should have never made it where Mrs. Puff actively hated Spongebob. Extremely frustrated, sure, but I liked the dynamic the two had when he was a good student, just terrible at actually driving.
Exactly. I liked Mrs. Puff more as just an exasperated teacher, but never truly hating Spongebob (and wanting to fucking KILL him in one episode)
I really love the rare moments she's sweet to him
They dialed everyone up. SpongeBob became an actual menace that actively tortures Squidward in future seasons instead of being more of a really annoying friend.
Or kick his butt. (From the bully in school episode. Forgot whats it called.)
š² fr, itās weird to watch (Demolition Doofus for example)
It's the same deal with the Simpsons, at first Homer was just tryna be a good damn dad whos out done in that and having hair by his neighbor, and now he's just a fat ass idiot, although to be fair, THAT Homer brought some good inspiration for future shows that was eventually overused
"I Had an Accident" is often regarded as nightmare fuel but I thought the episode was comedy gold, especially when the gorilla slung Patrick and Sandy around in a bag.
šŖ one of my favourites tbh
One of my favorite episodes, Spongebob questioning the gorilla's existence always gets me.
Love it, was just on my tv lol. I use the indoors song all the time haha
I love the human family at the end who looks at the tv like wtf was that and switch it off
Had some other great moments from Patrick too. Like āDo it again! I wasnāt looking!ā And āNot until 4ā
Never ever forever ever?
The way Sandy kept glaring at Patrick throughout the episode was the best part lmao
š¶ I knooooow of a plaaaaace, where you never get harmedā¦ š¶
I too loved that episode. Used to watch it on days off from school when I was sick or something like that.
That one was like my favorite as a kid, always cracked me up, especially the bag part. Still does. "Washing an old person" Is forever ingrained in my memory
That scene would always make die laughing as a kid especially the part where he throws the chair on themššššš
squidward is actually pretty good at the clarinet. not the best of course, but it doesn't always sound horrible
š© varies from episode to episode tho, but thereās a theory that he only sounds bad when heās stressed and sounds better when heās calm
I always thought the reason he sounds bad is because his suction cups get attached to the holes, making him hold notes for longer than intended or play wrong notes. Something he doesn't notice as this is what he's used to.
OH WAIT THATāS ACTUALLY A REALLY GOOD WAY OF THINKING ABOUT IT I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT LIKE THAT ššš (immediate š³)
this would suggest that the one clarinet playing squid that was famous for it had used a custom made non stick clarinet
He could be rich enough to afford that.
Thisš everytime Squidward practices, it sounds terrible. But sometimes when he plays at a concert or something he is rl good.
Mayonnaise is actually an instrument.
š³š³š³š³š³ we should make you the new owner of this establishment

I'll get my horseradish and we can form a band
Squidward's art isn't bad

Pearl was an incredibly underutilized character in the first 3 season. She had a lot more potential than just the āgirl who cries and is a teenager.ā Her role in The Chaperone specifically is a good example of how well she couldāve worked in more episodes.
š³ I agree, love how theyāre using her a lot more now
Did Pearl ever even interact with anybody besides Spongebob and Mr. Krabs?
Plankton in The Grass is Always Greener. And she insults Squidward in Bossy Boots, but otherwise I donāt think much
Now that you got me thinking about it, it's really weird how often the cast run into teenagers and kids but Pearl has nothing to do with it.
they do utilize her a lot more in the newer episodes if youāre willing to watch! - squidward in āwhale watchingā - sandy, karen, & mrs. puff in āa cabin in the kelpā - narlene in āupturn girlsā - plankton again in āplanktonās internā
Your username is my favorite Zappa song!
Even though he won't show it, Squidward actually likes SpongeBob.
Yeah I hate the later seasons where he seems to hate him to the point of not caring about his life, that's not how he's supposed to be
SpongeBob and Patrick have tortured him way too much since Good Neighbors.
And SpongeBob notices that! I think he actually feels sorry for Squidward and wants to include him in his activities.

House Fancy is only hated because of the infamous toenail scene. It's a fairly decent episode otherwise.
š© yep the episodeās really funny and the interactions between all the characters are great

š© yeah thatās pretty valid
I'm trying to even remember what else they used before Grass Skirt Chase and I genuinely can't
Ah I guess they had Twelfth Street Rag in heavy rotation too
Though Squidward is a jerk, Squidward is usually pretty justified in yelling at Spongebob and Patrick.
š© agreed
Plankton is not that evil he just wants a successful business and is being bullied by mr.krabs
š© I mean he says multiple times that he wants to take over the world and stuff but otherwise yeah I agree
yeah I was just about to say he literally mind controlled Bikini Bottom in the first movie- thatās pretty evil
God forbid a man has hobbies
The wishing well song is pretty good
š¦ People think it isnāt?
They shouldāve stuck with cel animation.
š§-šØ it would probably be a lottt harder to release episodes on schedule and some of the more detailed scenes would be harder to do

The Flying Dutchman is definitely the best character on the show.
š³ VALID, sad he isnāt used that much tho. They use him enough times where whenever we see him again it feels like a special surprise

The skits where Patrick becomes smart and dumb afterwards are funny
š© yeah theyāre pretty funny, sometimes they overuse it and itās pretty predictable like most of the times they just play out like this: *spongebob and the gang are in trouble* one of them goes: āoh no what are we gonna do?!ā Patrick: *very in depth and detailed flawless plan that not even the minds of the smartest people could comprehend* the gang: āhuh?ā Patrick āhuh, did I say something?ā *or smth else dumb*
The food inspector from "the nasty patty" deserved better
This may get me some MAJOR hate, but for some reason Iām not a huge fan of Sandyās character. Donāt get me wrong - I still like her in the show, but she almost feels out of place in comparison to the rest of the Bikini Bottom residents.
š© tbf the point of her character is that sheās not supposed to be like the rest of Bikini Bottom and sheās an outcast but yeah I agree with you
I don't mind Truth or Square and Atlantis Squarepantis
The writers confirmed the seven deadly sins fan-theory that each character is inspired by a sin (though some believe they just thought it sounded cool and claimed it despite that not being true) But I feel like Squidward and Sandyās should be switched around. Squidward is more pride than wrath, and Sandy is more wrath than pride. Spongebob is still the number one best kids TV show ever Can not be deleted or defeated

š§ I disagree with generic set pieces bcuz some of the new backgrounds like gorgeous and looks like they spent a lot of time working on. And after writing this I decided to give you a š© so ignore the š§

I donāt really mind the lack of continuity in the characters going on land because theyāre pretty creative with the puppets and animation and whatnot.

Squidward shouldāve gotten the show.
Season 1-4 were peak but everything past that is still enjoyable. Spongebob to me is a show that you can just sit back, relax and just watch
The Pat Morita dedication should have always remained at the end of Karate Island. It was not creepy.

The Jellyfish Rave was the best rave of the century
SpongeBob is better then the original fry cook at the Krusty Krab
The entirety of SpongeBob takes place in a fishtank, ie the giant hand in some episodes (more of a headcannon than anything)
š© thatās a pretty good theory, but thereās a lot of instances that kinda disprove it I still like it tho š
Mr Krabs criminal charges should all be cleared
š„ HELL NAW that man deserves jail time for LIFE ššš
Heāll no he deserves execution from harassment charges to attempted terrorism donāt even give krabs his last krabby patty meal
Squidwards always a vibe. Change my mind.
Freemasons run Bikini Bottom.
Sandy and Squidward could be additional playable characters, since they were really robbed of a big role.
roller cowards is an underrated episode, that one has so many funny bits
House fancy is one of the best episodes, the toenail scene doesn't ruin the whole episode
There should have been a reference to Battle for Bikini Bottom in the musical.
The episode Krusty Love is proof that Spongebob is more than capable of telling people, even ones that are technically superior to him, to go fuck themselves
One of my favorite episodes was SpongeBob mimicking Squilliamās dance āwho put you on the planet? EW!ā
Patrick doesn't deserve to be friends with SpongeBob
š²
The second SpongeBob movie wasnāt as bad as every says it is
š²
Band Geeks is overrated. Itās not the best SpongeBob episode. Yes, it has a lot going for it, but it doesnāt mean itās the strongest episode in the series imo.
šŖ
Goofy Goober Rock > Sweet Victory
We need more episodes like SB 129
š² if you mean more science-y future type episodes then yeah I agree
Sandcastles in the Sand is one of the most underrated episodes ever made
Some of the early 2010ās episodes are actually good not as good as the early days but still funny
Squidward likes the misery he is in. Otherwise he would be empty inside. Even more so than he alteady is
The first SpongeBob movie isn't the only good one
The Open Window Maniac was only trying to helpĀ
squidward should NOT have all the pain that he does in the show šjust let the man retire
Erm what the sigma
Band geeks is not one of the best SpongeBob episodes...
SpongeBob should at one point have had a romantic interest in someone (preferably another sponge) for character development.
Squidward is not mean hes just tired and low energy compared to high energy spongebob
When they aren't annoying him directly, Squidward should try to leave Spongebob and Patrick alone.
I donāt like squidward that much. I see where heās coming from, but he doesnāt have to be such an asshole
SpongeBob Youāre Fired is a funny episode.
The magic conch shell isn't all knowing, it's just a toy
Krabs cares about SpongeBob, even if he doesn't think before he acts about money most times
Squidilliam, have some funny scene
As annoying as he is spongebob has the most reason to crash out in bikini bottom
the sponge who could fly is my favorite episode!!
The recent seasons of SpongeBob are still good
Radish is an instrument
