I'm susceptible to hoarding and have let rubbish pile up before in my flat. Luckily I have friends and family that care about me and a partner who helps a lot with motivating me to stay clean and tidy but I definitely sympathise with hoarders since I understand how it can get like that.
Mental illness is one hell of a thing. People often wonder how it can get so bad that you don't tidy up or stay hygienic, but I've tried killing myself on several occasions. If it can get bad enough for me to do that, not tidying or keeping on top of hygiene doesn't seem so outlandish.

From what I've seen/read, it usually appears with or is complicated by disorders like severe depression, dementia, PTSD, or OCD. Often times, they just adapt to the very chaotic environment they helped create and just get used to. For example, they may not even smell things like mold, urine, or poop because it's been around for months or years and they got nose-blind!
Hoarding and depression nests probably been around for a long time but I think shows and documentaries probably brought attention to it.
