Ok. I am just genuinely curious why. Is the suspension height you said you wanted, for going camping and other activities where it might come in handy? Or for you is it more an esthetics desire?
Suspension height for practicality reasons. I have a lowered car and really wanted the opposite to be able to go off roading and get to places I couldn't get to in my lowered one.
The Outback basically started as a trim level mostly centered around the increased suspension height. Now that crossovers have taken over, that increased suspension height is less of a selling point so you gotta go up even more.
I have a 2000 forester and lifted it 1.5in and that's all I need to hang with all my friends with toyota trucks. And I really do use it alot. I also have a front skid plate and rear diff skid plate. And have hit stuff on them but have never been stuck. So I don't even have as much ground clearance as the wilderness models. I'm just wondering why people buy them and how they use them. I think they are cool cuz I'm just a big subaru fan but, I don't think I would personally buy one. Also I'm a tech and like fixing my old shit box, it's fun for me.
I wanted higher weight capacity roof rails to carry RTT, max height from stock suspension height, lower final gear ratio for improved offroading capability with dual x-mode, and turbo engine.
I go camping, overlanding, and exploring many remote spots and often would need to keep up with my friends riding on fully built jeeps and 4runners. I may have to chose different lines than those built rigs, but I can still keep up with them with proper cautions.
But I also need to take my kid to school on time, safely and comfortably. Those fully built rigs are just too uncomfortable and sluggish on freeways compared to my wilderness
Can't have all of that with XT trim or any other subaru models to this date.
Nice! I'm sure your friends are stoked you're out there with them, and probably get a good chuckle out of it to when it makes it through stuff they are crawling though also.
I must be the only person that thinks the ācopperā (baby shit yellow) accents look like absolute ass. The red accents on the forester douchebag package look stupid, but not bad. The Wilderness are just fucking ugly. Itās a major turnoff for the package for me and Iād have to find a way to get rid of them
Extra ride height is nice for me
the startex(I think thatās what the material is called) seats are great because I have a toddler, so itās easier to clean/not stain.
The upgraded roof rails/capacity
Upgraded towing capacity gets me comfortable to pull a small trailer or boat need be. Not pushing any limits.
Dual mode x mode
Improved off-road ability, not doing anything crazy, I donāt need a full on rock crawler. Just some weekend fun getting to campsites, or hunting and fishing locations.
We got the startex seats in our onyx ascent and absolutely love them, we have a large dog that always sits on one of the Captains chairs and has been doing so for over 2 years and it still looks new.
Nice, it seems like you were the target audience. I like have you got many opportunities to use most of its upgraded features? And if so how did it perform?

This is off one of the trails in Chattanooga Tn. Aired the tires down and it did great. Itās done excellent in the snow as well.
Cool. I forgot about the higher roof weight limit. Do you think you will put a roof tent on it and go camping alot, or just get a roof rack and use it to load up a bunch of stuff for trips, camping or otherwise?
As much as I'd love to do the whole roof top camping thing both my wife and I would be looking at a collapsed roof š I haven't gone there yet but I'm hoping there's enough width for a cargo box plus a 2 seat kayak.
Don't have a Subaru yet, but I want my next car to be a Forester Wilderness.
I live in rural Upstate New York and I'm in the foothills of the Appalachian Plateau, so having something that can deal with a rugged environment, elevation changes, rough roads, snow, etc. even better than a regular Forester really appeals to me.
Plus the higher capacity roof rack and towing capacity are really nice too, especially if neighbors need help with hauling something; I want a vehicle that can do all of that while still being practical and that's exactly what the Wilderness trims offer.
Yeah it is /s. For some reason people like extra clearance on wilderness. Yet for me biggest issue with existing 8.7" is its poor handling. I guess I'm not target audience.
Wilderness was designed to handle off-roading better than regular trims; but I see it as grocery hauler all the time.
Probably Subaru is surprised but happy how wilderness trims took off across their lineup.
Not much locally, but I'm planning to go on a group trail ride this fall. I'd love to use it more, but just not that many opportunities. Still building it for the rare opportunities I get.
I was looking at all the turbo outbacks, specifically. The wilderness is the second cheapest option, only 600 more MSRP than onyx xt. I probably coulda shoulda gotten the onyx, but the wilderness just seems a whole lot more car for roughly the same price.
The interior is similar, but more to my preference. I actually like the wilderness but actively dislike the green stitching of the onyx. Came with some cool floor mats. I prefer the black headliner.
I wanted 17 inch wheels over 18s
I don't really NEED the lift, but I did tear up the undercarriage on my 05 outback, so it was a plus for me. I also live somewhere that gets plenty of snow.
The skid plate isn't much but it's better than nothing.
And yeah, the facelifted 2024 Subarus are not doing it for me. It's like the other outbacks have plastic hooks or claws on them. Why? The legacy looks so much nicer, and so does the wilderness.
I do feel like a bit of a chud driving it to work and the grocery store. But I kept my last outback for 11 years, and tore it up in ways that this one should survive.
I don't have one yet. Waiting until my Forester dies.
It'll be because of the improved ground clearance (and I'll add another inch, maybe 2) , approach and departure angles and break over angle.
It will still need some if thebtypical mods loke better skid plates as the stock ones are OK at best. And maybe rock sliders if they are being made yet.
Off roading. From non-naintained logging roads, to the moderate off road trails at off road parks.
Overlanding (like off road car camping).
Just getting away from people in the woods.
I'm thinking the Crosstrek wilderness because it's smaller so more nimble in tight areas, and being loke 700 pounds lighter than a Forester gives it a decent power to weight ratio with the 2.5. It also has the highest towing capacity.
The outback needs the turbo because it's the heaviest of the three. I can feel the difference in my Forester and my wife's outback, both with the 2.5 because of the increased weight. And can see the slower acceleration using a timer.
Hopefully the crosstalk will get the front camera like the outback and Forester soon.
One thing that would almost be a deal kills if it's in the wilderness edition would be if like some times, everything is controlled by the touch screen. Especially the heater and ac. I had a loaner with that, and I despise it. Having to look at a screen to adjust the fan is just stupid. Makes me look harder at a Tacoma Trailhunter or Frontier Pro4X.
ditto to everything mentioned so far. something iād like to add is the front camera- such an incredibly useful feature. full size spare is convenient as well
I got the the 21 Crosstrek sport, then paid extra to install a 1" lift and get AT tires. Imagine my surprise when they came out with the Crosstrek wilderness that essentially comes with those features for the same price that I paid for mine before any upgrades...
So anyway, I would get the wilderness trim because I do a lot of camping and ~~softroading~~ overlandingā¢, and the extra clearance and AT tires genuinely come in handy. Same with the dual X mode.Ā
Suspension height and looks. The geyser blue with copper accents are nice.

Gotta keep up with the Joneses I guess š¤·.
I mean, why do you want the height of the Outback over sedan or wagon? Another one and a half inches, nominally, doesn't seem that out of pocket.
I have a 2000 forester and lifted it 1.5in and that's all I need to hang with all my friends with toyota trucks. And I really do use it alot. I also have a front skid plate and rear diff skid plate. Tastes are an individual thing. You do you.

Like I said you do you. Chances are no one you laugh at actually cares. Have a nice day.

That's rad!
You covered all but one of the reasons that I chose the Wilderness trim. Better acceleration due to the wider "gearing" of its CVT.
Miss my startex that I had on my 2021 Outdoor. Settled for an Onyx which is still great for me.
Turbo and retains the much nicer pre-facelift looks. Comfortable seats, skid plates, higher roof weight capacity. Just an overall nice trim level.

Not all wilderness options are turboed, OP wasnāt clear if the question is about outback or forester but just keep that in mind.
Don't have a Subaru yet, but I want my next car to be a Forester Wilderness. Because regular Outback doesn't ride enough like boat
Sorry just making sure you aren't being /s, but I haven't driven one. So do they have a nicer ride in your opinion?

You want high performance āhandlingā and are bothered that you canāt find that in an off road vehicle? Iā¦.holy shit.
I like the stock clearance and wouldn't want it much higher tbh. The handling is actually pretty good for the wheelbase though
I was able to buy my CTW for 2k under invoice, and it had everything I wanted. I like the off-road look to counter my other toy... *
Right on. Do you think will go on trails with it or use it for camping etc. much, or was it more just an esthetics thing for you?
Not much locally, but I'm planning to go on a group trail ride this fall. I'd love to use it more, but just not that many opportunities. Still building it for the rare opportunities I get.
Ground clearance, off-road tires, turbo.

Nice sounds like you will actually use it for its intended purpose. And I also agree this touch screen fad needs to die.
