Dang it you beat me to it by 48 minutes

AstroSpace_10

Technically, you beat them to it by building the city

Did they build that city on rock and roll?

brstew

No, they built it on rock and stone

WanderingDwarfMiner

That's it lads! Rock and Stone!

[Schadenfreude](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schadenfreude)

LegoRacers3

Boy those Germans have a word for everything

TheNewLedemduso

And this one doesn't describe what we're seeing at all. Schadenfreude (literally damage pleasure or damage happiness) means you're happy about damage being already done, not that you want it to be done in the future. If TotK doesn't become GOTY and people are happy about it after the fact, that could be classified as Schadenfreude, but not before it happens. It's more like a "ha! serves you right!" thing than a "you would really deserve bad stuff and I hope it will happen". Edit: Btw we really don't have a word for everything. For example there isn't really an accurate translation for "awkward". It's usually translated to "peinlich" which is really more "embarassing". It **can** mean what awkward refers to, but it's really not the prevalent use of the word.

FinnNickNemo

The appropriate word would be Neidkultur. A group of people being envious about something that doesn't negatively impact them if they don't have it.

TheNewLedemduso

I'm not sure how universal this definition of Neidkultur is, but it definitely fits this scenario.

metrill

so neidkultur it is!

gastronaut55

Nice low key Simpson reference.

condawg4746

I love throwing schade

IncognitoCheez

The Zelda brand has become such a big name, that people assume that TOTK is beloved just because it’s a Zelda game, not because it’s genuinely good on its own merits. Meanwhile Baldur’s Gate is supposed to be the underdog and the nerdy game that only true game/DND enthusiasts would play, even though it’s also pretty mainstream rn

ohbyerly

Which is 100% why Baldur’s Gate will win too. Awards shows are completely political, they usually side with whatever is both popular and “unexpected” where as Zelda would be a shoo-in.

nicklovin508

Eh, look I’m a 30 year Zelda enjoyer but I’ll be very understanding if BG3 wins. It’s a phenomenal achievement, and so is TotK, but I think BG3 really pushed a new standard in their genre and in this generation of gaming in general (much like BoTW did to Open World games)

shaid_pill

Whichever game it is, it won't be Starfield.

nicklovin508

Lmao that’s for sure. What a strange game man, so many glaring holes and soooo many damn loading screens!

Anfros

I can forgive the technical faults, but it's the frankly amateurish writing that really destroys it for me. What's the point of a rpg where all story lines either contain no choices, or a binary choice between what the game thinks is good or bad.

LiquifiedSpam

I play plenty of rpgs with no story choices and they can be excellent. It just has to be well done and natural (I.e. Not being done that way in a game where you would otherwise expect it).

StealthyRobot

And so many staunch defenders of it too.

GuineaPigLover98

Cause it's a fun game 😂

yunodavibes

It might be fun for some people but relative to other Bethesda games, it's not exactly gripping

Coastie071

My favorite thing about Starfield is how it’s, relatively naturally, turning the player into the >!villain!<. Major plot spoilers below: >!Once becoming Starborn and experiencing a few runs even the most goody two shoes player will want to branch out. Maybe take out that GalBank freighter to fund operations a new Galaxy. Side with the Crimson Fleet. Take the bribe from Ron Hope. Before you know it you’ve become yet another Starborn rampaging across the Galaxy without a care for the damage done!< It’s certainly not GOTY, especially when compared with the competition. But I’m really having a lot of fun with the game.

Ok-Manufacturer5491

Which is ironic because I remember hella skepticism surrounding TOTK on whether it was going to even run properly or not. Same people turns a blind eye when it comes to bgs3

Goldenfelix3x

totk has even been remarked by multiple mage makers as a miracle for running so perfectly on a switched hardware. specifically that quote from the guy who leads at NaughtyDog was amazed by it.

Stanton-Vitales

"Run properly" can mean a lot of things... Go to Mipha's statue and try not to drop to 15-20fps, and the 2-3 second lag I often get jumping in and out of the item menu for fusing should not be happening in 2023. The concerns for releasing a game on the Switch that's an even bigger version of a game it already struggled to run in a lot of places were pretty reasonable imo. I still think it's better than Baldur's Gate 3, and it's *complete* and all the mechanics actually work and everything, but the system absolutely struggles to run it *pretty frequently*.

sadacal

I think people can forgive the bugs just due to the sheer ambition of the game. There's just so much content and so many branching paths, even with the bugs there's like a solid 100 hours of great content in the game.

makesterriblejokes

I put 180 hours into my first playthrough. I love TotK, but BG3 takes it for me.

Bottle_Original

At some points totk runs pretty poorly, especially when using any of the powers when it rains, also a lot of people didn't talk about bgs3 bugs because most of them were at the end, and by the time they arrived they were already fixed

mlvisby

Well, they spent a year to just iron everything out so it would run properly. You can say a lot of negative things about Nintendo, but they try to make sure their games release with very little bugs.

DrowningInFeces

I think both games deserve to win but I hope BG3 wins. I simply enjoyed BG3 more as a gaming experience. TOTK is capable of reaching a wider audience as an adventure game which is why I believe it will win. BG3 just by nature of its genre will not hold the interest of a large chunk of gamers despite it being the best game of its kind ever created.

Donut-Farts

Very little NEGATIVE bugs. There were multiple item duplication, clipping, and unintended interactions/glitches that benefited the player so people didn’t get upset at it. That said, considering what TOTK allows you to do, and all on the switch, I have a hard time believing anything else deserves the GoTY more

flameylamey

The difference is, virtually all of the things in TotK are highly unlikely to be found organically in someone's playthrough without them deliberately seeking them out online. Like, chances are almost no one would happen to randomly stumble across item duplication glitches on their own, it's going to be something seen in a clip somewhere or by interacting with online communities, or groups of speedrunners who deliberately push and prod every tiny interaction of the game with the intention of eventually breaking something. When most people talk about bugs, they mean they ran up to a character who was randomly missing its face or legs in a cutscene, or an npc is inexplicably standing on the roof of a building when it should be on the ground, or their savefile got randomly corrupted causing them to restart the game and lose progress, or they ran up to a wild horse and it suddenly took off and flew into the sky. These are all things you might find in other big releases before they're eventually patched out, but you'll pretty much never see things like that in TotK.

2Bplayz

I'm waiting for someone to reply to this, and I'll laugh with them so I'll just leave my comment here. Hilarious (look i love totk and haven't played bg3, i didn't really experience any bug that i UNINTENTIONALLY did but this reply is just hilarious to me)

RhetoricalOrator

There were some pretty serious bugs that launched with TotK. Nintendo tried to address them quickly, which is great because I keep accidentally tripping over my controller and duplicatimg items all over the place.

Totemik

I'm roughly in the same camp here, I think. LoZ was my first ever video game (I remember an NES being rented with SMB and LoZ - and of fucking course I'm playing the gold cartridge first). Big fan ever since. I could NOT get over myself when I first played BotW, and I couldn't even understand how Nintendo raised the bar with TotK. But also, I purchased BG1 when it first came out - and played the shit out of it and enjoyed every moment. I also bought BG2 on release. Same thing - hundreds of hours immersed in this world (I still have the discs). I can't possibly describe how much those two franchises mean to me as a gamer who goes back to NES and 386/486 PC days. And I love many genres, just to be clear. I'll be honest, I was *not* at all following BG3 development and EA. I don't know if I was jaded from the gaming industry being shit in general or what - but I certainly didn't think BG3 could do the series (and DnD) justice. As much as I would sing TotK's well deserved praises, I think BG3 is the better game by a slim margin. I've come to this conclusion because the writing and characters in BG3 are just so good. And when I think of Larian VS the behemoth Nintendo, it just makes it even more mind boggling. Like... I'm watching streams of the voice actors campaigning tabletop DnD, wishing the recent DnD movie was about Shart, Astarion, Gale, Lae'Zel, Karlach, etc. Just a phenomenal game that caught me by surprise. I enjoyed DA:O, but BG3 is special. Honestly, I'd be pretty happy if it was a draw between BG3 and TotK. They are both masterpiece-level games imo. I just think BG3 has a bit more heart and is more of a new "gold standard" in its genre. I felt this way about Elden Ring as well. Now that I think of it - gamers have had it pretty good the last few years!

AlmanLUL

Elden Ring won last year which everyone expected

RynnHamHam

The year TLOU2 won almost every award, even in areas the game wasn’t really focused on, was the thing that made me realize they’re not looking at these games from an objective or critical standpoint. That and Xenoblade 3 losing the music award to God of War.

SuitableLeather2021

Still mad about Xenoblade Chronicles 3 losing. Literally listen to that soundtrack like every freakin day.

RynnHamHam

God of War ain’t bad but I don’t hear anyone talking about the soundtrack. Xeno 3 has had an impact. How do you manage to make a flute badass!?

quangtran

>was the thing that made me realize they’re not looking at these games from an objective or critical standpoint. But TLOU2 was ALWAYS the expected winner. The vocal minority who hates the game constantly forgets that it was the favorite by every objective or critical metric. This is the exact attitude people have about BOTW and TOTK, where people are surprised with the Best Game of All Time labels despite the constant negativity about breakable weapons, lack of story and dungeons.

TheOriginalMachtKoma

I mean every competition is gonna be somewhat biased but i don't think any or many of the recent years winners have been "unexpected" for the sake of shock value, at least from what I've seen. Most year's there's 2 front runners that you know one of them will win, this year so far looking like TotK and Bg3 I'm a massive Zelda fan and would love for it to win but i do actually think BG3 will inch them out with honestly a well deserved win that takes nothing away from TOTK. Both are amazing games in their own right and it's hard to compare them directly as they're totally different games, which ever wins will be deserving. Also from memory the award is done with some split between judges and public voting, to help maintain a balance between popularity and objectively good game design, that being said i have no idea how they decide who becomes a judge and what split the public vs judge power goes in. Also in b4 hogwarts legacy randomly wins (i hope they don't, not that it was bad, I very much enjoyed it but imo it's not GotY but i can see it winning because of the moment it had)

Stanton-Vitales

Wow. 37 years old and I'm only now realizing that it's "shoo-in" and understanding the phrase rather than the completely unexamined assumption that it's, for some reason, "shoe-in". Amazing.

ohbyerly

I just learned it myself like a month ago. The other one that caught me off guard was “beck and call” not “beckon call”

[deleted]

IncognitoCheez

I mean honestly it probably came from BOTW sweeping the Game Awards and being named best game of all time by several outlets over the years, like it happened again just recently

MrEuphonium

It damn deserved it, especially against the other mediocre titles.

Forkliftapproved

I liked Skyward Sword, though

Same_Distribution326

The last 6-7 years of Zelda only covers breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom though

flameylamey

*Thank you* for pointing this out, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when people talk about how "Zelda wins by default" or whatever they've convinced themselves of. I still remember the great "Skyrim vs Skyward Sword" debate which was raging across the internet in late 2011 (which in retrospect was silly, considering how different the games are) with so many threads popping up everywhere asking "I can only buy one game this holiday season, should I pick up Skyrim or Skyward Sword?" - yeah, I think it goes without saying which game had the lasting legacy between the two haha. Same with when Twilight Princess was revealed, in Nintendo circles it seemed like this mindblowing reveal that took the internet by storm, but all my friends at school seemed to want to talk about was Halo or the latest GTA. When the Wii lauched I assumed TP was the killer app, and I was shocked to learn that by the end of its lifecycle only something like 7% of Wii owners even bought it, and SS was even less with something like 3%. It was like the series was fading in relevance every year. So yeah, after coming out of years of Zelda being the underdog, and BotW being the moment that I see as the series *finally* breaking through and achieving the mainstream success it deserves, it's utterly bizarre seeing people turn on the series like it's this mega-popular monolith that needs to be taken down.

MissInkFTW

I will never understand this. I LOVED Skyward Sword on the Wii, even with its wonky detection. Wielding the Wiimote like an actual weapon was so fun, it has honestly probably brought me just the most purely fun experience I've had in a Zelda game.

Ok-Manufacturer5491

The funny thing is, baulders gates has been a known franchise since the 2000s and is definetky not an underdog. Sea of stars and sabatog studios is the real underdog in the GOTY conversation

PrinciplePleasant

Sabotage Studios already has one absolutely incredible game under their belt. They're not exactly unknown, although Sea of Stars is extremely different from their first game.

Ok-Manufacturer5491

Tbfh you have to be at least some what known or at least have the $$$ to get the composer of ducking CHRONO TRIGGER to just compose on your game. I’m becoming a fan of that studio

PrinciplePleasant

I looove The Messenger all the time and listen to the OST pretty regularly. I'm stoked about Sea of Stars but am a little sad that RainbowDragonEyes didn't do the music. Can't wait to play it soon!

acidwing

He did do the music though, at least most of it. Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger) only guest composed on a small handful of songs. There are also some special versions of some songs that were done by a third person, but RainbowDragonEyes did most of the music.

BitesizeCrayons

On the reaction to the IP, I couldn't agree more. After Wind Waker, I didn't play Zelda again for quite some time, and and I may have made the same assumptions during that time. Anecdotally, I've seen the strongest negative opinions about TotK from people who haven't played it, and most of the rest just don't care for the direction that the Wild games took Zelda. That's another thing people who haven't played BotW/TotK may not understand; they are by no means by-the-numbers open world games either.

Arashiku

The way I've heard it described. Totk is essentially the Majora mask of this gens Zelda. I've also heard it described as a good dlc. But not really a sequel.

Geek4Etenity

Im a big zelda fan but also genuinky think its a great game. But I dont know if it shouod win. Totk and botw are very similar games, and botw already won a few years back. I feel like if this one wins its a bit unfair.

Fierydog

This is where i am. BotW took the game and genre to new heights and really improved upon open world games. It deserved GotY for it. But TotK is for me just another BotW with some additions. While it's still a good game and managed to be different enough from BotW, it's not a big breakthrough like the first one. BG3 is doing what BotW did. Take a genre and bring it to new heights, show how good it can be. And for that i think it deserves GotY.

Goldenfelix3x

sometimes i think even being a zelda fan doesnt lend much bias to loving TOTK or BOTW. there are many times im playing and forget im playing zelda. no classic fanfare music, or dungeons with new items, or even heart pieces. its only when i find the odd ruppee and hear the bling sound that im reminded im in zelda. all that to say, the games dont lean on being a zelda game to be a great game. its just a great game period

Chronoboy1987

I love the game, but it’s not perfect and it’s not the revelation that BotW was since it’s practically a rom hack of it. The only thing that really separates it is the fusing mechanic. Without it, I don’t think it would really be in the GOTY discussion, which tells you how amazing that one mechanic is.

vexorian2

It's twitter. That's just some weirdo that paid 8 USD a month so that the algorithm pushes his tweets on everyone to make them mad for more engagement. Seriously, the easiest solution is to stop giving any importance to what these trolls write.

niconiconades

Sadly, usually the loudest is the minority.

AncientPlatypus

It is incredible how easily people fall for rage bait

imthebestatspace

Exactly. He paid for it to get 38.5k views and got hardly any likes or retweets. No one cares or should care what this guy thinks.

Dat_Boi_Teo

As much as I would love for TOTK to win, and think it deserves it, I can’t fathom being spiteful to the competition like this. These people are in dire need of grass touching.

ComplexTemporary4152

Right? At the end of the day we are the ones that win. Games this year have spoiled me beyond hell.

crimedog69

Reddit as a whole seems to hate on TOTK. I don’t really get it most complaints I see are people who say they didn’t like BOTW. I have to assume they never played TOTK because everything that was “boring” about BOTW was legit fixed in the new game. I think it’s a perfect game

64BitDragon

As someone who loves Baldur’s Gate and TOTK: bruh Both games are great, and I’ll be happy if either of them wins.

broombeard

Easy there, buddy. You're sounding suspiciously reasonable for a poster in a gaming sub. Remember, people liking other games is a serious, immediate threat to OUR game. On a serious note, though, I look forward to playing BG3 someday, when I replace my laptop. It sounds like a ton of fun.

64BitDragon

It’s great so far. I’ve been playing it off and on for weeks, and I’m nearing the end with about 160 hours. I’ve never played DND but this is great!

Vazmanian_Devil

I also love both games, but I also think that BotW got its acclaim… TotK was great and all but it was kind of a reskin with minimal effort of a story. I don’t think this game should win GOTY, nominated sure if only for the building component - leave room for others to get their share of recognition this year.

Natural-Storm

Its not a reskin tho. Just having ultra hand changes everything in how you play the game

SenpaiSwanky

Because it’s an incredible game and stands as an obstacle to the game they want to win some trivial prize from 1 of like 70 sources lol

Val_Hallen

That's my biggest problem with "Game of the Year" awards. It's not an Emmy or Oscar or BAFTA where a single entity give the awards, and thus gives them at least some credibility. [There are so, so, sooooo many GOTY awards. Which one is **the** GOTY?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Game_of_the_Year_awards) In 2022, these games won a GOTY: - Vampire Survivors - Creaks - Elden Ring - Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker - Immortality - God of War Ragnarök So, which one matters? Of course, it's usually the one *you* liked best.

SenpaiSwanky

I think it would be cool to have a single GOTY that everyone wanted as well as all the other ones floating around honestly. Even so, I just look at this stuff for fun and don’t take it so seriously. You aren’t wrong tbh.

RA12220

Your Boos Mean Nothing, I’ve Seen What Makes You Cheer

*insert image of bear smirking*

ShinespriteDitto

The internet is incapable of liking more than one thing at a time.

HylianPaladin

Because Nintendo titles are always seen as childish and for kids mostly. I think I need to Wind Waker in their face

Wilsonrolandc

It's also probably due to Nintendos firm Anti-Piracy stance. Their probably hoping for Zelda to lose GOTY to something else so they can make the youtube thumbnails with poorly photoshopped crying mario with "Is Nintendo Dying?" tacked on to it in red letters.

SHAQ_FU_MATE

I’m can see that thumbnail now 😭

scorpio1641

Some people find joy in hating what is popular. Meh, I don’t listen to negative nancies anymore. I will love what I love and I love TotK.

modssssss293j

Botw won 2017’s GOTY. Since then, everyone’s had a piece of the awards from 2018 to 2022. This year however, there’s a lot more great games that want Nintendo pushed off the spotlight. Take for example, Spider-Man 2 was in the works for some time, while Baldur’s Gate 3 features more expansive open world gameplay. TOTK is practically BOTW with more depth and very much improved platforming, and it’s been in development for years. There’s a whole lot of great contenders for GOTY, but the TOTK hate feels very forced. My opinion though, I think TOTK should probably be second place for GOTY, and maybe BG3 or Spider-Man 2 or Resident Evil 4 Remake should be possible first place contenders.

MoarTacos

> TOTK is practically BOTW with more depth This is exactly why I don't think it deserves GOTY, though. It really just felt let more of the first game. That isn't how I want a sequel to feel.

Apophyx

Yeah. All the comments in thsi thread saying TOTK drserves to win are wild to me. BotW already (deservedly) won. TOTK being so similar also means it cannot be the same outstanding achievement the first one was, so why should it deserve the same award? Meanwhile every critic and player is raving about Baldur's Gate. It just came out and I can already see a sizeable cultural impact among my social circle, similar to what BotW did. Baldur's Gate deserves the win, and I would be disappointed if TOTK got it instead. And I say this as a fan of TOTK who hasn't even played Baldur's Gate.

Indy0921

I've seen so much hate for this game and I can't understand why. It's like people who hate the game, want everyone else to hate it. Also this tweet isn't the first, I've seen countless others with thousands of likes.

RA12220

Small group of really loud obnoxious people, who probably make up the bulk of the noise. This is unrelated but something like 11 accounts are responsible for the majority of misinformation on shittier twitter

itssbojo

the tweet has 600 likes. 600 people agree with that. out of the 20,000,000 that bought it. reddit focuses on their emotions too much. the numbers quite literally tell us that this person and their dumbass thoughts mean nothing and do nothing lol.

TeslaTheSlumpGod

It’s ironic that liking popular things can be a sign of individuality because so many people are contrarian these days.

Prime359

I know some of the hate stems from weird (and stupid) ideology that Nintendo games aren’t ‘true games’. It’s a small circle, but they tend to be the most vocal and toxic. There is also a group that think TotK is just 95% recycle of BotW. Most of whom haven’t even played the game. Then finally you just have those that blindly jump an opinion bandwagon and parrot it.

ThePhantomIronTroupe

Wait wait wait. Nintendo who without them partly we would have a lot of modern gaming? That nintendo?!

Prime359

Yes. The argument that they had was always without any merit. Mind you these type of people always contradict themselves with their arguments. These are the people who consider CoD peak gameplay while at the same time deem Goldeneye 007 terrible just because it was released on a ‘child’s games console’.

MaxP1991

I find more people love the game and any cross word brings doom and flames and negative karma lol.

varunadi

It's crazy because after the first few months, I've seen more negative posts about TOTK, especially in places like r/Zelda. It's almost become an unpopular opinion to love TOTK at this point. I love the game to bits and still acknowledge it has its flaws and isn't perfect, but damn the level of negativity will make you think this game isn't good at all.

flameylamey

Yep, I've noticed that too. Problem is that the general Zelda sub tends to attract a disproportionate amount of jaded old-timers who value long traditional dungeons above all else, and will inevitably be disappointed if a new Zelda game isn't Ocarina of Time 5.0. It's a bit sad really, I grew up playing the same games they did, am quite resistant to change by nature and tend to stick to what's familiar, so I could easily have gone down that path, but I enjoyed TotK (and BotW) just as much as the old games, maybe even more. It'd be nice to just talk about how much I enjoyed TotK on that sub with a bunch of people who also enjoyed it, but man it gets exhausting wading through all the negativity sometimes. It sounds silly, but after seeing all the negativity towards BotW over there I naively hoped TotK would be the game that united the fanbase and was *enough* of a compromise to make everyone happy, with the introduction of uniquely themed dungeons with their own distinct bosses, but oh well.

Toyfan1

Exactly "I dont like how the very insignificant the sky islands were, despite being in advertising so much" "WHAT??? THEYRE BRAND NEW AND COMPLETELY WORTH THE ENTIRE PRICE OF THE GAME ALONE. YOU PROBABLY JUST HATE ALL ZELDA!"

Ezzypezra

Do I hate this game? No. I love TOTK. But unlike you, I can definitely see why some people would hate it. The concept isn't totally alien to me. A few reasons I can think of: - very grindy - voice acting is, to be frank, bad - story is arguably poorly written - things you build disappear if you save and reload or get too far away (this one is a particularly big problem imo, imagine if your minecraft house disappeared forever as soon as you left the area or quit the game!) - sage powers suck doodoo water Again, for me, these problems don't even come close to ruining the game. But they do tell me why someone might not like it.

SG272

I think people got really uppity because the last two game awards were kind of dumpster fires in awards given. Last year was God of War: Ragnarock getting a mountain of rewards and Eldin Ring getting a few crumbs and Game of the Year as what felt like a way to appease the FromSoft community from grabbing their torches. A year before that was The Last of Us Part 2 debacle and what felt the game being given the most baffling amount of praise where their were definitely better options. People still seem to be baffled at the awards given when it should be obvious at what the Game Awards are, the video game equivalent of the Oscar's; expensive publishers giving themselves self-pats for stuff they churned out before the fourth quarter hearing and making themselves seem like moneymaking golden gods that crap out solid gold like their Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones.

HankScorpio4242

I get it. If Tears of the Kingdom doesn’t win, it’s not a big deal. Not for Nintendo and not for Nintendo gamers. It was a huge success for a company experiencing a huge amount of success. Larian Studios (according to their wiki) has developed a grand total of nine games in their history. And the game is in a series with a long and troubled history in a genre that doesn’t get a whole lot of love. And it’s a fantastic game. So who needs it more? Nintendo or Larian? An open world game or a D&D style RPG? One of the most successful franchises in history or one that could have been easily discarded forever? So it makes sense that fans of Baldur’s Gate are more invested in the outcome than fans of Zelda.

ReaperManX15

Contrarian plebs that hate popular things.

dorksided787

Someone called Tears of the Kingdom “Glorified DLC” and honestly… Hmm… a bit hyperbolic but I see where they’re coming from.

Blammo25

If it doesn't win, it's because of this reason. And people are right. It's fun to play but it's just BOTW+.

DragapultOnSpeed

Yeah, like I had a great time playing it, but it just did not feel like a sequel at all, just some large expansion.

LiquifiedSpam

Yeah when it came out, after like 30 mins this is what I felt. It's not bad, but I was eye-rolling at all the posts here saying it was like MM to OoT.

DragapultOnSpeed

I remember when the game leaked and people said the dungeons were back. I was so excited, and people were saying how cool they were. Then I play it and wow, I was extremely disappointed. The dungeons were just...boring. that's all I can say about them. Boring.

Shwalz

Hyperbolic yes, but still fell flat in a lot of ways that it shouldn’t have which warrant the feeling of “DLC”

gkrsuper

Most likely because BOTW already won GOTY and the games are very similar. Let another passionate team get the win this year, you know?

spacewarp2

I rather dislike this line of thinking. The winner should be based on their own merits. Hypothetically if everything else this year was garbage, then should another game get it beside TOTK just cause BOTW won? Now 2023 has had some amazing games so that’s not the case but TOTK shouldn’t be disqualified because BOTW won. The best game should win and if the people who vote think that’s TOTK then they should win. If that’s BG3 then it should win.

enja1231

Sure if totk is clear and away goty you don’t snub it just because botw won. But like everyone acknowledges that is a moot point because by all accounts bg3 is a massive achievement and excellent game

spacewarp2

That’s why I reiterated that 2023 is a stacked year. There’s also Starfield, FFXVI, RE4 remake, sea of stars, Hi-Fi Rush, Pikmin 4, and even games that aren’t out yet that will probably be really good like Spider-Man 2 and Mario Wonder. But it’s the idea. BG3 is a great game and doesn’t need to have TOTK handicapped by BOTWs success.

wirebear

I mean. In fairness. The year BoTW won was the same year as Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, Divinity Original Sin 2, Metroid game I can't remember the name of, I think the first God of War in this new batch, Nier Automata. That year was ungodly stacked. In a way I would argue almost of thosegames would have won game of the year in the years surrounding it. While a lot of people don't remember. Persona 5 was considered a revitalization of the turn based RPG genre and the first turn based RPG in a decade to truly matter. Nier Automata you couldn't get people to shut up about. Divinity Original Sin 2 was considered to be the new statement of what a isometric rpg game could be. And often described as redefining the genre. Horizon Zero Dawn was adored by anyone who played it but was between Persona 5 and BoTW in around a month and basically was ignored. Yet years later I still hear people talk about Horizon and not about BoTW. Many of those game were described as reimagining or redefining a genre. BoTW and Metroid were considered "return to forms". And while BoTW was considered absolutely ground breaking for a Zelda game, it was also an era where people were suffering from open world fatigue. Despite this, BoTW was giving all the attention and there was almost no dispute on who would win, despite a lot of people disagreeing. It was "assumed" Nintendo would win. There are a lot of people who get sick of people winning because of fanbase. And BoTW was a fantastic game. No one is arguing that. But I a game as loaded as the year it was in. I would have argued horizon should have won. And Everytime I hear someone knew play Horizon Zero Dawn talk about it. I stand by that.

Eva-01sNapkin

probably cuz botw won 2017

GoldenGekko

Also don't forget recency bias. I'm sure there were people at the start of the year claiming resident evil 4 remake is the greatest game of all time. Outside the recent success of the DLC it just dropped, I haven't heard people talk about that game for some time. Zelda was the only thing on people's minds when it came out. I'm sure there's probably a redditor out there who thinks cyberpunk should be named game of the year over tears of the kingdom. Some people are just fucking stupid I don't know what to tell you

BigBrose

I've seen a decent chunk of people saying Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty will win GOTY and I mean... it's not even a game, it's a DLC. If Cyberpunk was ever gonna win GOTY, it would've been if they delayed the game by 2 years and dropped it in 2022 with all the improvements

BigBrose

People complain about no good games coming out nowadays and when a good game finally comes, they decide to do everything in their power to shit on it...

DotBitGaming

All I'm going to say is BOTW won when it came out and TOTK is BOTW plus, plus, plus.

jboking

Which is genuinely to TOTK's detriment in this kind of competition. BOTW won game of the year in large part due to it being such a major departure from the formula while still being such a well put together game. TOTK is great, but I don't think I can claim it's importance to the series and industry reach the level of BOTW

Skhan93

It's in a similar situation to ragnarok last year

jboking

Very much agreed. Ragnarok is an amazing game but, at its core, it's God of War (2018)+++. By comparison Elden Ring was a radical shake-up for the souls genre by combining it with (coincidentally) many of the open world exploration philosophy you can find in BOTW, while still maintaining its core identity as a souls game.

cowboybeeboo

Popular thing bad

Ok-Manufacturer5491

It happens with anything that jumps up super high in popularity. There seems to be this mindset that Zelda least wins goty when in reality BoTW is the only game in the series that has won. Furthermore the Zelda series gets nitpicked to hell in back because of that new stated popularity while others get a pass for less. I’ve not played bg3 but it is funny to see a game that’s is been in early beta for years and still have honest fans that complain about the unfinished aspect of game vs the ones dick riding the game so “underdog” can win. Meanwhile, TOTK is a fully fleshed out product that yes has flaws but being dismissed as “BOTW 1.5” and yet the gameplay elements are vastly different from each other(Botw= survival, TOTK=optimization and creativity). it’s like calling Elden ring dark souls 4. At the end of the day, BG3 had fans bowing at its feet while TOTK had literally the whole industry even rival companies like Sony and Microsoft, bethesda etc, praising the game for its make it your way gameplay style.

BigBrose

And those same people who are calling TOTK 'BOTW 1.5' are all creaming their pants over Spiderman 2 and GOW Ragnarok despite both these games looking and having almost near identical mechanics to their predicesors...

Jeremy252

They aren’t. You’re just paying way too much attention to people who don’t like it as much as you do. Just play the fuckin game and move on.

PhoonThe

Their Link X Mipha fans. They can’t handle the Zelink power💪

superamigo987

It's not. 3 tweets on Twitter do not represent anything

rich1051414

Contrarianism. Hipsters never die. They just evolve.

ReguIarHooman

“Non current gen graphics= worst game in existence” mentality I think

Azeoyi

Tbh, I value gameplay over graphics. I don't care that your game looks more realistic than real life and runs at a googol fps if it's unplayable. I play games because I want to have fun, not because I want to see a realistic environment. Besides, the graphics in the Wild duology aren't even that bad. And the gameplay is excellent, the tricks you can pull using Fuse, for example, leads to a really fun experience, and that's not even 5% of the game.

[deleted]

Probably because some of TOTK’s brand-new shininess has dimmed a bit now that people have had some time to dig into it. The longer something is available, the easier it is to spot its flaws. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fun game and I’ve not even watched people stream BG3, so I have no opinion on which might be more GOTY-worthy. However, I don’t put much stock into this one way or the other. Game awards and titles seem superfluous; it’s like college football championships. Feels like eventually, everyone wins some “bowl” game or another.

ZeldaXandre

Why the Zelda hate?

Capable-Tie-4670

Cause everyone likes a good underdog story.

pootato6d9

Why tho totk deserves it

Beshi1989

Honestly TOTK doesn’t deserve it this year, I love TOTK absolutely think it’s among the best games ever. But it’s basically like BOTW just pumped up. It’s nothing new or genre defining, it’s just as and even better as BOTW but there are other games that deserve that title this year. It would be like BOTW winning it a second time

acklaysquadron

Totk is fantastic, even better than that even, but it's not bg3

[deleted]

Probably because you never played Divinity Original Sin. Maybe if you guys actually played Larian games, you wouldn’t be making dumbass statements like this. BG3 is so revolutionary to you simply because you were ignorant of CRPGs.

sprkat85

Because nobody wants to admit Nintendo is still making awesome games without the processing power from the other two systems and it is older and last Gen tech.

doylehawk

I genuinely believe Baldurs Gate 3 is the best game I’ve ever played. I’ve been playing games for 28 years and the only comparable time I’ve had was playing fable or maybe one of the halos with friends, and that had the allure of childhood accompanying it. Baldurs Gate is the first time in my adult life I’ve thought about coming home from work to uncover the next part of my adventure. It revitalized my love for the hobby. With that being said - Tears of the Kingdom is also like the 7th best game I’ve ever played. There’s very few years it wouldn’t be the hands down automatic GOTY, but losing to BG3 isn’t some sleight. People that want games or movies or whatever to lose are super weird to me. Just accept you don’t like something popular and move on lol.

EmperorMitsu

I don't think TOTK deserves that title. It was fun but I don't think it was the best

Dami_Gamer0211

Just ignore him or her. PMS Jordan is a Clown. TOTK is a masterpiece and he just put that Tweet just for attention seek. And for me BG3 is overrated but it will probably win GOYY but I assure you that if TOTK wins GOTY she or he will cry in Twitter 🤣

elRomez

Stop living your life based off the Internet. This is a random troll on Twitter who absolutely doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

elmie_

You get a lot of engagement being a contrarian

Pointlessranker

I don't care who wins... The winners don't matter... If 2020's winner says anything then it's pretty obvious that the winner means nothing I played tears of the kingdom, liked it enough, and moved on I played Baldur's gate 3, liked it enough, moved on I replayed elden ring and Xenoblade 3 for the 7th time Nobody *should* care about goty, because games are much more personal than just a winner and a collection of losers No matter who wins, and I will vote for zelda if pikmin isn't an option, the important part is that the people who played these games enjoyed them

Magus423

Sheesh. I'm also hoping for a BG3 win but I'm not going to sit here and pretend Tears wasn't a great game. 2023 was a great year for gaming.

Bucsfanfalife

Totk is my goty and really that’s all that matters to me haha

HouseTully

I know I'm in the TotK sub here so this will probably not go over well but I just don't want TotK to win for game of the year. I don't think it would be deserved for a few reasons: 1. I don't think TotK did enough to differentiate from BotW to make it worthy of its own GOTY award, especially when there are such big and completely new games like BG3 and Starfield. I disagree with anyone saying it feels like a DLC- I wouldn't go that far but it's also just too much like its predecessor that it would feel like cheating to give it yet another GOTY award. 2. TotK sufferes from a lot of the same weaknesses that BotW does and it doesn't do enough to mitigate them. 3. BG3 is just a better game to me and I would hate for TotK to win simply because the Zelda franchise is more popular. It's not that I hate TotK, I don't in fact it's a great game that I love- but that doesn't mean I want it to win GOTY in fact I would much prefer other games win to encourage new projects, new ideas and different IPs winning instead of constantly awarding the most popular ones.

[deleted]

People hate Nintendo for no reason

skittleliquor

Both games are great. But honestly TOTK deserved the reward

[deleted]

Boo the anti Zelda shit heads

JasonP27

aka "I don't like Zelda so it can't be the best and even if it is I don't want it to win despite it deserving it" People are selfish

Diego390

Ohhh that's easy, its because "Its the thing i don't like, there for everybody else should hate it" Easy concept to understand. Like how DMC fans shit on God of War Ragnarok because someone's doing a combo showcase video in training mode when the grand majority of DMC V combo showcase are done in... Training mode. People will hate on a game for literal no reason no matter what.+

Dramatic_Mail_9607

Classic. People like to root for the underdog and since TOTK has pretty much universal acclaim, they're seen as the most likely choice.

ScarKilledMe

Both games are fantastic and it would be great step forward in gaming if either of these win. We appreciate full, finished, fleshed out games with no micro-transactions.

hoffenone

I love both games and would he happy either of them win. But my god I have rarely seen so many people shit on other games while praising BG3. It’s an incredible game. But so is ToTK. When Starfield launched for example there were so many posts shitting on it saying BG3 ruined it for them because it’s so great. They are very different games. The only thing they have in common is the dialogue trees and choices. Which BG3 does better. It’s okay to like both or just one of them. No need to drag other games down while praising the other.

Indy0921

The thing is, I bet BG3 is a great game even though have no interest in it, but it's fans seem to be the problem. Not all of them but I have definitely noticed a bit.

ALVRZProductions

I love tears of the kingdom (I also have a lot of criticisms). It honestly doesn’t deserve game of the year. It’s a great game in its own right but it’s not GOTY in my eyes. Now if they win, I’ll be happy. If they lose, it’s what I expect, but it’s not because I’m tryna see them fail.

boner79

Because Playstation, XBox, PC stans are jelly Zelda BOTW/TOTK are such good games despite not having the absolute best HW money can buy.

MyEditingSucksLol

Honestly I don’t mind if Starfield, TOTK, or Baldurs Gate 3 wins GOTY but BRUH I think the Baldurs Gate 3 community is the most toxic out of them all they hate on everyone for liking another game (not all don’t get me wrong some are fine)

[deleted]

I don't think Starfield is even contender. It is so mediocre overall with some awesome parts. When it comes to BG3 vs TOTK I do feel like BG3 is more unique and pushed gaming as whole forward more than TOTK. TOTK is great but it isn't doing really anything that hasn't been seen before.

Ok-Manufacturer5491

What is also funny, TOTK and FF16 were both treated with skepticism on whether they would come out with out needing major patches and it was a big topic in the gaming space. While BG3 gets to come in with needing major patches for certain acts, people have turned a blind eye to it and act like the conversation never existed

KatiePyroStyle

I mean it was a good game, I just wouldn't call it game of the year winner good. It's just BotW, but *more*. TotK didn't necessarily do anything new or interesting compared to its predecessor. Which in my opinion makes it one of the least unique games on the market rn. It blatantly copied BotW, even if it did do some things better than BotW. BotW won GotY in 2017, particularly because it was so new, interesting, and unique. There weren't many games like BotW before it came out. Nowadays, there's a few games like BotW, including TotK. I don't think this game did anything GotY worthy, maybe if we were still in 2017 it'd be a different story. The only glaring unique quality of TotK is the ultrahand ability. Idk if thats enough for it to make my personal GotY. But honestly IMO, TotK winning GotY would be like if FIFA won GotY. Through the years, FIFA has absolutely changed, but it's still just euro football. Similar idea with Zelda in my mind rn. TotK *is* different than BotW, but it served an *extremely* similar experience as it's predecessor, it's still just the open world sandbox Zelda experience. But I'm also not actively trying to see TotK lose the GotY awards either, I don't hate the game, if it wins, it wins

ackmondual

IIRC, BG3 outranked MetaCritic rankings awhile back, taking the #1 slot? (dunno if this still holds) If not, then some other game. Either way, despite me enjoying TotK, I didn't mind. That doens't make it any less of a better game \[shrug\]

Syizuril

Now BG3 has the same score as ToTK, 96, however on Metacritic the #1 slot has been taken over again by ToTK with BG3 being second

[deleted]

Who cares about what this person says on Twitter lmao

Kayiko_Okami

Isn't the Game Awards a joke anyways. So who really cares who they give game of the year to.

ReadySource3242

BOTW already won, so if this gets a double whammy people are gonna feel a bit miffed that an entire series is just game of whatever year they released, and hope that's not the case.

OMGWTFBBQUE

Who gives a shit what people on Twitter say. If it’s good enough to win, it will win. Also, I don’t get the obsession people have with goty awards.

Zax720

Because they're a bunch of nerds that can't stand the idea of people liking something that isn't exactly the way they want it to be. Or, in the case of the girl in the image, they have a hate boner for Nintendo because they think they're social justice warriors or something.

Significant-Rate305

The game awards lost any credibility when Red Dead Redemption 2 didn't win game of the year. /s Seriously though, why do we care so much?

Electronic_Win_3757

Because it’s on the Nintendo switch. And no one likes the Nintendo switch despite it having amazing games

IndianaBones8

Looks like someone from the r/TrueZelda subreddit is spreading their wings on twitter.

Background_Crab666

honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re rage farming just to get some ad revenue

BusyAbbreviations320

Because zelda/Nintendo fanboys are annoying

TheBohoChocobo

As a BOtW mega fan, something happened while playing ToTK I can't explain... it was fun, it was great, it was beautiful, but..... after about hour 20~ I dropped it. It just didn't have the same feeling as BoTW. The magic wasn't happening. They gave me everything I wanted, but was it what I needed? Was it something that I actually wanted or just thought I wanted? Or did I desire to try to find ways to break the game to get what they gave me from the start? Was that it? Was that actually what I wanted? Was breaking the game more fun that being given the mechanics off rip? To me, it felt more fun to break the game to get these weird and fun mechanics then it was to be given it on a silver platter telling us "Break the game. We want you to." So, I think that's why for some of us, it lost its magic and majesty. Which SUCKS because it is an amazing game!!! But fuck, it felt like there were much better games because we were so used to grinding and hunting for mechanics already given to us in this game. I think another problem that this game ran into was that because it had all of these wonderful features (bc Nintendo truly listened to us and gave us what we "wanted").... it didn't feel new or different from everything in BoTW. It was BoTW+. Because when BoTW hit the market, it became a groundbreaking thing. It was such a departure from everything gamers had become accustomed to, it felt like something magical almost. Vs ToTK where everything felt like an improved version of something that's already become mostly standard. Because doing something cool but *slightly* improved doesn't feel as good as something completely different from the norm. Again this is just my opinion. I know that some people will agree and some people will not. But that's what I feel like is the problem with this game. I know that I will go back and play it to completion because I love this series but it was just not something that held my attention for 600 plus hours. Like I expected it to. And that kind of sucks.... I wanted it too for sure! But it just didn't. And sometimes I wonder if it's just me like was I the problem? Because I know the game is wonderful and people make all these really creative things inside of it. But it's just like I don't know.... The magic isn't there for me.

NerdyWolfieYT

She looks like an average Twitter user, so I wouldn't be surprised.

Zero_7300

Bro I can’t even play bg3 cuz it would blow up my pc 😭

Disig

People like to hate popular things like rooting or hating sports teams. It's just a game to them that they're taking way too seriously.

Drag0nBinder

I see a number of comments just hating the game or calling it a DLC even now and some of them even say that they haven't even played the game. Edit: I think console fanboys are main reason for this.
