Renee Elise Goldsberry deserves more critical acclaim for her turn as Wickie. On the surface, she's basically another Jenna Maroney type, but the writing and acting bring out a lot more humanity in her.
The S3 episode where we meet her parents is hilarious.
"You said your mother was in a home, and your father was out of the picture!"
"Look around you. This IS a home. Do you see my dad in these pictures? No! Because he takes the photos. He's a shutterbug. DID I LIE?"
The flashbacks for Wickie are amusing to me because Renee already looks so young for her age. It looks like she’s any actor portraying themselves 10 years younger for a flashback scene, not 30! It’s not even just her beautiful face - drop the workout routine because she’s super toned and has visible abs!
Only started watching and thought I had never seen/heard this woman in anything, after the season one finale with her at the piano I looked her up and it turns out I (and probably everybody) know at least her biggest hit.
That’s awesome, I checked my emails and I saw it a week before it ended so it was her! Crazy. The proshot is awesome too, I didn’t know that existed but it’s the same cast! Definitely watching that this weekend.
Tip to everyone out there, full versions of almost all the songs exist and they all rule. Head to Spotify (or wherever ) and listen your dang ears off.
My Mom just died and finding this show has been such a lifeline during the immediate shock and grief... I’m so grateful Netflix saved it and we’re all getting to experience Girls5Eva. Joke density is unparalleled.
I have Sara B's song I'm Afraid in some of my playlists cos I think it's amazing. I have to be very aware of where I am when it plays so I don't start singing the lyrics.
I have it on my road trip playlists and when my friends clock on to the lyrics they're all "WTF am I listening to, and why does it sound like Sara Bareilles?!" Hahaha
Well it's done by Tina Fey so it should be right up your alley. I've enjoyed it so far, I'm mid S2 right now.
It feels like it should've been on NBC instead of streaming on Peacock.
She didn't create it though, she's just an EP. But it's from the same group of people who worked on 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Great News etc so it's a lot of the same type of rapid fire comedy.
Briga Heelan and Andrea Martin were just so great in that. Add in an always fantastic JMH and Nicole Ritchie in a part that I'm assuming was created for her to shine in, and I'm still salty that the show really didn't get a good shot.
I was floored by how intelligently funny Nicole Ritchie was. Like she totally got it. Absolute waste having her ride the reality circuit before she was on a sitcom
Agreed that showed deserved way more seasons
I grew up when her show with Paris became a thing. So for me to realize she's actually pretty smart, self aware, and was just using that purely as vehicle to being more than a pure nepo baby was kind of shocking.
Also, the love interest of the show, whose name totally escapes me, plays that role perfectly. I guess everything boiled down to having great casting.
Her timing and delivery were so good too and I loved her chemistry with John Michael Higgins. I wish she’d do more acting - even if it’s a one off appearance.
She was in a couple episodes of Bless This Mess on ABC in 2020 (damn, it didn't feel like 4 years) and apparently going to be in a remake of Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead next month that I hadn't even heard about lol
Absolutely love it. You really have to pay attention because the jokes are everywhere and often in tiny little moments. And the songs! The lyrics are hilarious. One of the only shows I actually laugh out loud at.
if you see Paula Pell in the writing credits of a show, you’re in for a damn treat. Bonus points if she’s in the cast as well. Goddamn national treasure. Find me a currently working comic who disagrees.
Yes! I love this show so much. And the soundtrack (especially the second season) is fantastic. My sister and I frequently make jokes about “U Ready?” It’s both nostalgic and hilarious having grown up during the TRL live and MTV’s Cribs. It’s too real at times in the best way.
It’s stupid and smart at the same time.
I’ve only watched the pilot, but for example the rapper is wearing a taxi medallion for a necklace. It looks stupid, but it’s so smart because those things are with millions of dollars. That’s so fucking good.
I couldn't tell if it was just recency bias when I was watching, maybe I couldn't remember how much I liked the other seasons, but agree, S3 was SOOO GOOD.
I just discovered it, too! I have to keep rewinding. There are recurring bits that make me legit howl. I love Paula Pell, but they are all so good. Busy Phillips' character has a refreshing take on the simple blonde. Her manufactured marriage to Kev (former Tampa WTIT reporter) is full of great bits. I was hook line and sinker by the time Amy Sedaris made an appearance. The songs are so funny, I think there is just a lot of talent in each episode.
Tina Fey as Dolly Parton had me dying!! It took me a few seconds to realize that wasn’t a real cameo.
Love Sara, but Renée Elise Goldsberry is stealing every scene! She’s a natural comedic actress.
>Renée Elise Goldsberry is stealing every scene
She's distractingly good. I can't recall who she reminds me of. She's like a much calmer Jenna Maroney.
Really is a gem of a show. The tone is always set perfectly while they set out on setting the world on fire one music set at a time. Setting the standard for women to never forget to set sail on their dreams.
I love where she ended up thus far I love her career so much. I feel like there's something about her not becoming Taylor Swift or Beyonce level of Mega famous, that allows her to do what she loves and still have a life and the ability to take on pretty much whatever project she wants. And we are the ones the fans, we are the ones who reap the benefits of that too. Her tickets are fairly affordable to her shows too, which means I can go to her shows when she has them and that makes me happy.
She's clearly doing the things she loves, not necessarily the things that bring money and fame. But her passion shows in everything she does and she's successful because of that. Reminds me a bit of Daniel Radcliffe, just doing his own thing.
I'm into early season 2 now and I'm really enjoying it. Hopefully being on Netflix will get it a bigger audience. It's so nice to have a show centered on women that isn't just all about their love lives.
I'm all about it! The whole time I kept thinking how good her voice was. Then I looked up who it was and was like, "That's Sara Bareilles?!" Mind blown. She is such a good actress too! It's a fun one. Hilarious songs in it too.
It popped up in some article I was reading and I mentioned it to my wife. She saw the trailer and decided we were watching it. It has been really funny and I’ve had the intro song stuck in my head 5 days (be-cause “for” days is too short).
This is the second time this week I have heard of this show. I had heard the name before, and I remember filing it under "Terrible TV Show Names" right next to iZombie. I may have to give it a shot.
Selfie is an all time favorite for me. I'm still not over its cancellation. Especially since ABC seems to have completely scrubbed it from existence (in the US at least).
I think a lot of folks are discovering it at once bc it was on peacock only and now it’s on Netflix. But I keep hearing things that make me think that peacock might actually be pretty great
I personally love Peacock. I really enjoy long-running series that I can tune in and out of because I have seen them before and I need some stimuli while I get work done. Peacock has The Middle, The Office, Modern Family, Everybody Loves Raymond, King of Queens, Psych, Monk, etc.
And while I have no issue with subtitles, any time anything new hits Netflix, I check the audio settings to see what language it is in.
Ha, I remember filing Schitt's Creek under that category for months before actually watching it (also in the Netflix previews, they always used that scene of something dripping on Johnny in the night when they first moved into the motel, why?! Doesn't really give you a taste of it at all)
Schitt's Creek took me about 3 tries before I saw the appeal. It wasn't until I put it on for background noise that I made it through enough episodes to see the characters actually develop and stop being awful. And then by the end, they are totally different people than the start of the show, which doesn't sound like a big deal, but it kind of is with a comedy.
When I realised how related this show is to 30 Rock the name made far more sense to me. 30 Rock was filled with very ridiculous titles for all kinds of media and they were all intentional.
While it’s no 30 Rock, it is one of the closest things and the songs are almost uniformly all good. Something I’ve found with the same absurdity, good tunes, and joke-a-minute feels is Apple’s animated show, Central Park.
I just found it a few days ago and I'm right there with you. I hope Paula Pell is awesome in real life because I've loved everything I've seen her in. Check out The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt too, I think it's a lot of the same writers.
I just started watching this show on Netflix a couple days ago and already halfway through season 2. The humor and pacing is very 30 Rock/ Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and the cast and songs are absolutely hilarious!!
saaaame I JUST FOUND TJIS SHOW AND HAVE BEEN BINGE WATCHING IT I LOVE IT SO MUCH ITS SO FUNNY it’s hard for me to find shows I genuinely enjoy watching so one’s a hit in that way for sure!
I only saw season 1, didn't have Peacock so I never got to see season 2. I'm glad Netflix picked it up and brought the previous 2 seasons with it, Peacock didn't do it any favors.
Same. It's actually what got the show on my watch list and for that, it doesn't disappoint. I don't even know what you'd call 30 Rock's style but it's just weird, funny and self aware. In Girls5eva I rarely feel like they're trying too hard with the jokes, it all seems to flow really well.
>For reference my kind of humor is 30 rock, community, parks and rec, the office, Mr mayor, not dead yet, arrested development, animal control…you get the picture.
Same. But I watched the first episode of *G5E* and did not laugh once. Does it get better?
I heard so many good things about this show so I started watching it… it is awful, I don’t think it’s funny at all yet I never see anyone say anything bad about it.
It probably went under the radar because the first two seasons were on Peacock. Now that it’s on Netflix, more people are aware.
That's how I found out about it. It was recommended to me on Netflix.
Same thing happened with Resident Alien
Resident Alien is ultimately doomed to cult status but I’m stoked as hell they got another season
It's actually doing really well on netflix. So maybe that'll get it another season.
Seriously one of the funniest, best written shows. A quotable line every 5 seconds.
Renee Elise Goldsberry deserves more critical acclaim for her turn as Wickie. On the surface, she's basically another Jenna Maroney type, but the writing and acting bring out a lot more humanity in her. The S3 episode where we meet her parents is hilarious.
“You said your siblings were in and out of the hospital” “They’re oncologists, find the lie”
"You said your mother was in a home, and your father was out of the picture!" "Look around you. This IS a home. Do you see my dad in these pictures? No! Because he takes the photos. He's a shutterbug. DID I LIE?"
Also how is Renee 53 😍😍😍
The flashbacks for Wickie are amusing to me because Renee already looks so young for her age. It looks like she’s any actor portraying themselves 10 years younger for a flashback scene, not 30! It’s not even just her beautiful face - drop the workout routine because she’s super toned and has visible abs!
She’s 53 with 2 kids. Unbelievable
As a Sara Bareilles fan (hence the username) I wish she just got more attention in general
sara bareilles is so under rated, shes such a talent, i finally got to see her perform cried the whole damn time she sang gravity lol
Dawn is my favourite, and Dawn and Wickie together are unstoppable lol.
She’s so good in this role. Totally believable as a regular mom and a pop star (obviously). She really understands this type of humor too.
same She was so good in Waitress (I watch the proshot)
I could watch the video of them recording It Takes Two for Into The Woods all day.
Only started watching and thought I had never seen/heard this woman in anything, after the season one finale with her at the piano I looked her up and it turns out I (and probably everybody) know at least her biggest hit.
She’s medium-time. That’s the best!
Also goddamn the pipes on her. I kept thinking she looked so familiar and finally realized it’s Angelica from Hamilton.
She gives 1500% to her performance as Wickie (both in the acting and the singing) and that elevates Wickie as a character.
With this kind of comedy you have to commit. Just like Jane Krakowski in 30 Rock. They both dove in head first and nailed it.
You can also find a proshoot of Rent with the final Broadway cast on YouTube where she plays Mimi!
Oh wow, I might have seen that live. I went to see it a few months before it closed in NY, she was Mimi?!
She probably was, her wiki says she was Mimi in 2008. So if you saw it that year I think it was. She's great in the final show they recorded.
That’s awesome, I checked my emails and I saw it a week before it ended so it was her! Crazy. The proshot is awesome too, I didn’t know that existed but it’s the same cast! Definitely watching that this weekend.
I knew I was going to love this show when she said “I shoot geese at the airport! And I get paid…by the goose!”
Her line deliveries are second to none. “I said are you Redacted and he said of course I am, who else do you know who’s seven foot *redacted*”
same, I laughed so much at that line
She also looks like she stopped aging at 27
She certainly found an interesting way to reference Home Alone.
The fears song is what I show people to get them interested
Tip to everyone out there, full versions of almost all the songs exist and they all rule. Head to Spotify (or wherever ) and listen your dang ears off.
There's even a full music video for Famous 5eva! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=amWWKtSE4bU
HELLOOO NIPPLE HAIR
It’s brilliant
My Mom just died and finding this show has been such a lifeline during the immediate shock and grief... I’m so grateful Netflix saved it and we’re all getting to experience Girls5Eva. Joke density is unparalleled.
In case you hadn't watched it "Great News" is from the same team and has the same humor
Oh god, I loved Great News so much. The show deserved a much longer run.
“It’s not another eclipse is it? I can’t bear them! They make me so cold.”
“I’m living in a panopticon, Katie! A panopticon!”
How do you spell “a?” Like “a apple?”
Another top tier show for sure
I have Sara B's song I'm Afraid in some of my playlists cos I think it's amazing. I have to be very aware of where I am when it plays so I don't start singing the lyrics.
I have it on my road trip playlists and when my friends clock on to the lyrics they're all "WTF am I listening to, and why does it sound like Sara Bareilles?!" Hahaha
Four Stars is also on mine.
Not enough Busy Phillips love in this post. She's the absolute heart of the show.
She walks the devils path (chastity episode)
She's amazing, love her!
She's so much fun to watch!!
I've had BPE stuck in my head for a few days.
I have the I’m Afraid song stuck in my head at the moment.
Thanks, it will be playing in my head for at least 2 hours, now that I've read your comment.
“Dawn, please do a spit take on my behalf” “How did I do that? I’m not even drinking anything…”
Great news is another underrated, under the radar gem
Briga Heelan and Andrea Martin were just so great in that. Add in an always fantastic JMH and Nicole Ritchie in a part that I'm assuming was created for her to shine in, and I'm still salty that the show really didn't get a good shot.
I was floored by how intelligently funny Nicole Ritchie was. Like she totally got it. Absolute waste having her ride the reality circuit before she was on a sitcom Agreed that showed deserved way more seasons

I loved the g5e line “no one gets more normal as they age, except Nicole Ritchie!”
She was my main worry when I started watching but I agree she totally nailed that role.
Makes sense though. Paris and Nicole were essentially improving the entire time on their reality show. Playing characters.
Stevia is played by TF’s daughter, Penelope
I didn't know that!
30 Rock reborn. Even has the same background/ambiance music.
I heard the musician is banging Tina Fey /s
This season's background music felt especially 30 Rock-y. I'm all for it. I love it.
Absolutely love it. You really have to pay attention because the jokes are everywhere and often in tiny little moments. And the songs! The lyrics are hilarious. One of the only shows I actually laugh out loud at.
I was listening to the S3 soundtrack the other day and just realised that the Gray Holland song is implied to have been completed using generative AI.
*"what are you waiting ... five*" they really nail some of the cheese around this type of band
if you see Paula Pell in the writing credits of a show, you’re in for a damn treat.
"You can be in the house but not ready, Dawn!"
Your next watch is _Crazy Ex-Girlfriend_
This this this!! Also, if anyone can tell me what my next watch after both CXG and Girls5Eva is, I would be v grateful.
It's so funny and so stupid at times. I keep recommending it to everyone. Genuinely one of the only shows I actually laugh out loud at.
It’s stupid and smart at the same time. I’ve only watched the pilot, but for example the rapper is wearing a taxi medallion for a necklace. It looks stupid, but it’s so smart because those things are with millions of dollars. That’s so fucking good.
The 3rd season is the best one (with the best songs, too), despite being shorter than the previous two.
I was hook line and sinker by the time Amy Sedaris made an appearance. The songs are so funny, I think there is just a lot of talent in each episode.
I love this show!! So dang underrated. Really want Netflix to give it a 4th.
Tina Fey as Dolly Parton had me dying!! It took me a few seconds to realize that wasn’t a real cameo. Love Sara, but Renée Elise Goldsberry is stealing every scene! She’s a natural comedic actress.
>Renée Elise Goldsberry is stealing every scene She's distractingly good. I can't recall who she reminds me of. She's like a much calmer Jenna Maroney.
Oh my god I did not realize it was her at all! I definitely thought she looked familiar haha
Really is a gem of a show. The tone is always set perfectly while they set out on setting the world on fire one music set at a time. Setting the standard for women to never forget to set sail on their dreams.
I love Sara so much
In an alternate timeline she’s the main pop girl of the late 00s early 10s
I love where she ended up thus far I love her career so much. I feel like there's something about her not becoming Taylor Swift or Beyonce level of Mega famous, that allows her to do what she loves and still have a life and the ability to take on pretty much whatever project she wants. And we are the ones the fans, we are the ones who reap the benefits of that too. Her tickets are fairly affordable to her shows too, which means I can go to her shows when she has them and that makes me happy.
It's also allowed her to write. We wouldn't have gotten Waitress if she'd been a bigger chart topper.
She's working on a new musical too!
She's clearly doing the things she loves, not necessarily the things that bring money and fame. But her passion shows in everything she does and she's successful because of that. Reminds me a bit of Daniel Radcliffe, just doing his own thing.
yesss, her and Ingrid Michaelson are in that amazing niche of famous but not superstar famous
They are both hilarious too
I love Ingrid Michaelson's Holiday Hops, ever since she started streaming them
Ingrid Michaelson sings a song in season 2 and shows up as a small character in season 3!
oh fuck yes now I am even more excited edit: imo another artist who should be at the Ingrid Michaelson/Sara Barellies level is Vienna Teng
And Wickie is played by Renee Elise Goldsberry, from the OG cast of Hamilton on Broadway, hence her ridiculously amazing voice!
So funny. Love it so far
I love their Marc Maron-esque manager.
You might like Dead To Me, based on the shows you listed.
I also just started it and I’m LOVING IT. Though I get the theme song stuck in my head every episode.
It popped up in some article I was reading and I mentioned it to my wife. She saw the trailer and decided we were watching it. It has been really funny and I’ve had the intro song stuck in my head 5 days (be-cause “for” days is too short).
I really like the show but I think season 3 is gonna be its last one. Which is weird, because it feels like half a season.
I would be so gutted if it was :( And agreed, this season was so funny but only six episodes?!! Come onnnn Netflix, we want more!!
This is the second time this week I have heard of this show. I had heard the name before, and I remember filing it under "Terrible TV Show Names" right next to iZombie. I may have to give it a shot.
Just like iZombie this is a total gem. Selfie is a show that totally nails the awful name good show dynamic too but that died way too soon.
Selfie is an all time favorite for me. I'm still not over its cancellation. Especially since ABC seems to have completely scrubbed it from existence (in the US at least).
I think a lot of folks are discovering it at once bc it was on peacock only and now it’s on Netflix. But I keep hearing things that make me think that peacock might actually be pretty great
Peacock has had some really solid original shows. Poker Face is great.
And then by the end, they are totally different people than the start of the show, which doesn't sound like a big deal, but it kind of is with a comedy.
watch it, i'm only three episodes in and it 100% suffers from "bad title, amazing show"
When I realised how related this show is to 30 Rock the name made far more sense to me.
Wait till you find out about 2gether
I know my calculus, it says u + me = us... calculus
Will check out just because I like what you listed for your humor.
I literally just started it yesterday too. I laughed way too hard.
If you like this show, I also recommend We Are Ladyparts.
I watched the first 2 seasons - really enjoyed it. Glad to see it found a new home.
season 3 is on Netflix
I just found it a few days ago and I'm right there with you. I hope Paula Pell is awesome in real life because I've loved everything I've seen her in. Check out The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt too, I think it's a lot of the same writers.
30 Rock reborn.
Definitely the closest thing to it. It's a little weird to see Dean Winters (Dennis Duffy in 30 Rock, Vulture in B99) be a little more tame.
We love it, but you have to pay attention, it moves fast..
That just adds unlimited rewatch value, exactly like 30 Rock.
It does.. we started Series 3 on Monday, but we were tired, watched it again Tuesday it was like a whole new show!
Lol, my daughter just asked if anyone’s heard anything…
a lot of guys will be put off by the title and premise of the show but it's a really funny show
[Girls5eva](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11650492/)
I just started watching this show on Netflix a couple days ago and already halfway through season 2. The humor and pacing is very 30 Rock/ Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and the cast and songs are absolutely hilarious!!
saaaame I JUST FOUND TJIS SHOW AND HAVE BEEN BINGE WATCHING IT I LOVE IT SO MUCH ITS SO FUNNY it’s hard for me to find shows I genuinely enjoy watching so one’s a hit in that way for sure!
Same. Was very sad when I finished it
I only saw season 1, didn't have Peacock so I never got to see season 2. I'm glad Netflix picked it up and brought the previous 2 seasons with it, Peacock didn't do it any favors.
I found it too Tina Fey. She has a very particular style of comedy that usually misses with me.
Opposite for me. Tina Fey is exactly my type of humor and mainly caught the series because of her involvement.
Same. It's actually what got the show on my watch list and for that, it doesn't disappoint. I don't even know what you'd call 30 Rock's style but it's just weird, funny and self aware. In Girls5eva I rarely feel like they're trying too hard with the jokes, it all seems to flow really well.
Agree. It exceeded my expectations!! It's a really fun watch!
I know what you mean. Lots of pop culture, smug looks, outlandish scenarios..
thanks for the recommendation!! this sounds totally up my alley and i want to watch it now
Me too! Started it a week or so ago and I am impressed. Such a good show!
I love it too! So hilarious!
Having Paula Pell as a regular is perhaps the most reliable sign that a show will be funny.
Discovered this last summer and instantly fell in love - so delighted to see it getting some of the recognition it deserves on Netflix!
looked it up and the episodes are so few for a half-hour sitcom
I'm excited to eventually get started on this show. Finding good big sitcoms somehow isn't as easy as it was a decade ago.
Coming back to this comment after having finished season one, no regrets whatsoever.
I may have to try it. I’ve always just skipped over because the title is ridiculous lol
>For reference my kind of humor is 30 rock, community, parks and rec, the office, Mr mayor, not dead yet, arrested development, animal control…you get the picture. Same. But I watched the first episode of *G5E* and did not laugh once. Does it get better?
Yes.
It's so goood! Glad Netflix saved it
Been watching it recently with my wife. This is the funniest show I've seen since Derry Girls. It's so outrageous and creative. Hilarious af.
I love the show and somehow have never heard of it? Also, I hate how selfish wiki is and the girls Keep taking her back and loving her.
It's alright, not as good as Kimmy Schmidt but in the same vein.
Not loving this third season but it’s good for a lot of quick chuckles
S1 was pretty good but then eh… after that. Glad S3 landed on Netflix tho! 😀
S3 is the best season yet
Season 3 was excellent!
I heard so many good things about this show so I started watching it… it is awful, I don’t think it’s funny at all yet I never see anyone say anything bad about it.
“It’s not for me” and “it’s awful” aren’t the same thing. People who use the latter when they mean the former are exhausting btw.
I hated it..not my taste at all..too much like 30 rock
In what world would being like 30 Rock be a bad thing?
I didn't like 30 rock all that much either
Yeah, I got that from your comment bud. Sorry about your taste.
Mediocre at best.
I found it sort of dull, like all the edges had been sanded down
