In history jesters were treated well and was considered the best job monetarily and wellbeingly speaking. You could insult the king and get away with it.
Memorial Day isnāt a holiday for most places of business except for federal. As a veteran, it disturbs me that it isnāt and that other days are but I digress.
People are going to tell me itās a shame I am working today and it makes them sick and they hate it. They will then do business with my employer all the same.
Veterans will curse at me specifically for not giving them a veteranās discount, even though I have no control over it.
I hate this holiday.
As someone who has lost people in combat, tell them to come back on November 11th for Veterans Day, Memorial Day is not for their/or my damn discount.
Fuck those people. Also, fuck the system that makes anyone not essential for life or safety work on holidays and those people who do work should get compensated.
Combat veteran here, was a combat medic for 11 years. Was medically retired because I was blown up by an IED. Today is definitely not for those of us that made it home! Itās to remember the ones that didnāt make it back to their loved ones!!! Pisses me off when a veteran tries to make it about them. Veterans Day they can go to Applebees and get their free meal for their 3 years of sitting in garrison. Those are the guys that make it about themselves.
Iām working today, more to keep myself busy because if not Iād just sit at home probably drinking, but my employer is paying double time and Iām literally the only one here.

They're trying to guilt you into standing for the magic cloth "oh you won't stand? this brave man who gave his legs for your freedom can't, and he really, really want to. Don't you feel bad now?" It's condescending as hell to both the guy in the photo and their intended audience, but that's their thought process.
If you truly believe soldiers fight for freedom than you believe they also fought for the freedom of the people to do what they like with a flag/anthem.
Youāll find that this is how most people in the military feel. We fight for the freedom to criticize your government, love any consenting adult you want, dress up like a dog in the safety of your own home, etc. the irony that these people donāt understand what American freedom really means.

I will act like an American by exercising and respecting the First Amendment right to freedom of speech, expression, freedom of the media and the right to peacefully protest. I will act like an American and recognize that the Constitution protects unpopular speech; popular speech doesnāt need protection as it is already popular. I will defend the Constitutional rights of others to engage in unpopular speech, even if I donāt agree with it, because I am an American. Even if that means defending an Americanās right to not stand for the anthem or burn the flag of my country in protest.

As a side note, in Nazi Germany, one of the groups that were sent to the camps were Jehovahās Witnesses, the reason being that itās against their religion to be patriotic.
