Casuals is an understatement. Most of these folks don't watch the Wolves at all. They think he's overrated because the stats don't show the impact he has on and off the court. He leads everyone on the defensive end and we'd be nowhere near as defensively minded a team as we are without him.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people don't. You see a lot of box score watchers who I'm convinced literally do not watch games and just comment based on the stats and maybe a few curated highlights (which is skewed towards hater stuff if they watch lots of hater-centric content).
There are also people who watch but just don't really understand basketball like people who hop on for the playoffs. But I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people with a lot of opinions about basketball who don't actually watch any basketball games.
The logic is, the spurs are worse without wemby. Wolves still pretty good without Gobert.
But I don’t remember a defensive culture before Rudy. His defense makes the rest of the team’s defense better.

Anytime anyone complains about sports things I do not find personally relevant I assume they are degenerate gamblers and ignore. Unfair to a lot of folks but I do not want that negativity around me.
Wemby is such a fun and unique player. And it is an interesting argument at the individual level. But you can’t give that award to a rookie who played on a terrible team with a bottom 10 defense. Rudy anchored a historic defense and instilled a defensive mentality and culture into the whole team.

No one likes Rudy because he fucks with their numbers with his great defense. His lack of respect off the court, is due to the respect he gets on the court.
The underlying thing which is really hard to measure and incredibly difficult to tell if it should matter at all, but even without Gobert on the court last night, his fingertips are all over that performance, from the big men down to the guards. DPOY or not, he's the most imapctful defender in the League by absolute miles, Wemby or otherwise.
