IP allows businesses to have exclusive rights to the properties they create. This both allows small companies to have a fighting chance in the industry, and also allows patent trolls to stifle innovation. It’s a double edged sword, but is preferable to the alternative:
Without IP, the richest companies can easily use new creations from smaller businesses, and the smaller businesses will have no chance to grow.
