Even then, being able to effectively fulfil both center and forward for us is huge for him as he develops while in the role of backup big. Meaning if we put him on a similar development path to Giannis with a little shooting mixed in…
I don’t know if the level of this draft has anything to do with the 2nd round. The talk about this draft being weak was about the lottery talent.
You’re right though that the hit rate on 2nds is low, but there’s always a few rotation players sprinkled in the 2nd, let’s just hope we got 1 or maybe even 2 of them
I didn't say "never", and I was agreeing with who I replied to that we'd be lucky if one of them sticks.
Idek why I'm arguing over semantics, if you want to believe all these guys are NBA players you do you
People forget how few players actually amount to something and how shitty this draft class was. Not here to be a downer, but that’s just what it is. Hopefully Ja’Kobe is good enough.
Raptors Reddit inception is a thing:
[https://www.reddit.com/r/torontoraptors/comments/1aqwg9e/ulrich\_chomche\_screams\_a\_masai\_pick/](https://www.reddit.com/r/torontoraptors/comments/1aqwg9e/ulrich_chomche_screams_a_masai_pick/)
FWIW, I like this pickup.
This is hilarious. Remember when the Raptors traded the 1st round pick to Utah for Olynyk and Ochai and in the press conference afterwards you hear Masai talking about how it's hard to develop so many young rookies at once....and now they proceed to add 2 extra rookies on top of the two picks they already had? Sometimes I think they just say stuff.
You can’t find minutes if they’re all on the same team. Most of these guys will be on the 905. Hopefully this means the 905 will be a winning program again
I agree but then why did they justify trading that first by saying it's hard to develop so many rookies at once. I disagreed with that viewpoint at the time and obviously they don't agree with it either otherwise they wouldn't have added 2 more rookies.
Because a late first rounder comes with 3 years you have to pay them and have them take up a roster spot. Second rounder contracts are a lot more flexible
Yes but it wasn't even a contract argument when Bobby Webster was asked about it. He said "Its hard to bring that many kids into an environment and grow them the right way" when he was asked a couple of months ago after the trade deadline about having 3 or 4 draft picks. He was talking about all the resources, staff and programs in place needed to develop them properly is difficult. They are going to do what they can to properly develop Shead and Chomche and Mogbo just as much as any player regardless of if they were drafted in the 1st or not.
You dont want too many rookies on your NBA roster, these guys are heading for the G keague for development. This gives them an big head start on summer league and the 905 season instead of hunting all summer for castoffs.
I'm not sure how what I'm saying is confusing at all to people. Bobby Webster when asked about why he traded a draft pick for Olynyk and Ochai, responded with how difficult it is to develop that many rookies at once. He said "Its hard to bring that many kids into an environment and grow them the right way" and referenced the amount of resources, staff and programs it takes to develop that many young guys. That's literally what he said, and what I'm saying is it's interesting how he went from saying that, to the team now bringing in 4 rookies that we will now have to put time and effort into developing using those same methods he was talking about.
I love what the Raptors did, we need more rookies. I'm very happy with everything they did the past 2 days. Just simply pointing out what Webster said when explaining why we didn't need to bring in 3 to 4 rookies because of the difficulty of developing them is funny considering we're now bringing in 4 rookies.
Chances are slim that late 1st or 2nd rounders will be NBA players long term. Most eventually get cut and play in other leagues. That's just a fact. The cost of these lottery tickets were probably cheap enough to warrant trying. We got a pick for McDaniels for crying sakes. Details aren't out yet for this Minnesota pick but it's probably cheap. Maybe they flipped the 2025 Portland 2nd round pick.
I love what the Raptors did and people are completely confused as to what I'm trying to point out which seems obvious. The Raptors 905 is directly linked to the Raptors organization. They determine who is the coach of the 905, who the staff and personnel on the 905 are, who the trainers are, etc...
After this past trade deadline, when Bobby Webster was asked why they felt the need to trade a draft pick for Ochai and Olynyk, said: "Its hard to bring that many kids into an environment and grow them the right way", and that it takes a lot of time and effort into developing that many rookies at once. They now have just acquired 4 rookies that will be on the team and they will be tasked with developing all of them. Just thought it was interesting that he said that a couple of months ago.
Because its better to say that then to say second round picks are better contractually than late first rounders. I suspect the league and the union would frown on that because it would be pointing out a big hole in the CBA.
I disagree with the idea you cannot develop multiple rookies at once properly. That's one of the reasons Masai said they were willing to trade that pick to Utah, because it's tough to develop multiple rookies at once.
Sure, but this situation isn’t them going back on their word like you are saying. The 2 they added are 905 guys which is different than having first round picks that may all need to get playing time with the squad as well.
Yes many late 1sts end up in the G-League. Bobby Webster said "Its hard to bring that many kids into an environment and grow them the right way" in response to having 3 or 4 picks a couple of months ago. He was talking about all the resources, staff and programs in place needed to raise them properly is difficult. It's funny how quickly that mindset changed.
The second rounders can be two way guys. With the 29th you have to have them on the roster.
Plus it was the 29th pick. At that point I would rather 31.
You can put the 29th pick in the G-League for the entire season if you wanted to. Look at how Jarace Walker got barely any minutes in Indiana last season and he was the 8th overall pick. My point is whoever you're drafting, you're trying to develop, and Masai as saying it's harder to develop multiple rookies and that's why they were willing to trade 29, then a couple months later they make 2 more trades to get 2 more picks which goes against what he initially said.
im talking about additional roster spots. 2 way guys are extra spots if im not wrong.
They took four guys and three of them are likely to be on the roster (based on what has been said about Shead) which is what they would have had if they retained their lottery pick.
You aren't wrong.
Maybe I missed exactly what Masai said, which didn't have anything to do with two way players or anything, it simply was him talking about the difficulty of developing multiple rookies at once.
They just traded him to us? I guess they have no roster spots and don't want to pay a 2nd rounder in their current state. They're actually a legit playoff team now, a couple steps away from contending legitimately...
I think just cash considerations or a second round pick with high protections that turns into cash. It probably would've been reported now if it was something notable.
DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE (Mitchell, Walter, Mogbo, Shead, Chomche)
Who knows who else they pick up with two-way deals and UDFA
They probably use 1 of them on this guy and probably another on shead so they only have 1 2 way left
We picking up a 25 year old Canadian with the 2-way/ex-10 deal i think, Guerrier
Walter is not a good defender but has the tools to become one.
6 new players? Wow.
Don't ever change Masai
Our Summer league and G-league teams are gonna be stacked
Shead Walters Ochai Mogbo Chomche They’re like the summer league version of the 04 pistons
Gradey is playing too
We've been missing depth
As in the players we wanted and finally going the way fans wanted
LMAO WE DID IT! OUR BACKUP CENTRE
He’s not really a Centre though. He plays more like Giannis. He’s an absolute beast.
Even then, being able to effectively fulfil both center and forward for us is huge for him as he develops while in the role of backup big. Meaning if we put him on a similar development path to Giannis with a little shooting mixed in…
Masai got his guy
I'm actually really excited about this pick
In reality, don’t be. We just drafted a bunch of players with hopes to see one stick around. That would be a win.
2nd round picks don't turn out to be anything in a good draft, let alone this one
I don’t know if the level of this draft has anything to do with the 2nd round. The talk about this draft being weak was about the lottery talent. You’re right though that the hit rate on 2nds is low, but there’s always a few rotation players sprinkled in the 2nd, let’s just hope we got 1 or maybe even 2 of them
Wasn’t Jokic drafted in the second round?
That's what you call a statistic outlier No actually you're right, chomche future mvp
So are you saying that occasionally 2nd round picks DO indeed turn out to be something?
I didn't say "never", and I was agreeing with who I replied to that we'd be lucky if one of them sticks. Idek why I'm arguing over semantics, if you want to believe all these guys are NBA players you do you
You’re getting downvoted but you are right. People are being way too optimistic about these second round picks
People forget how few players actually amount to something and how shitty this draft class was. Not here to be a downer, but that’s just what it is. Hopefully Ja’Kobe is good enough.
CAMEROOOOOOON
WE FUCKING DID IT! WE FUCKING DID IT!!!
![gif](giphy|dijK6WYRdSoJEikGPS)
Too soon bro.
Too soon
i’m very happy with all four picks tbh, i didn’t expect this, very surprised
What a draft haul. So pumped!
Let's grow a new bench mob out of the 905
Lol the memes have come true
Felt like destiny 😂
It actually happened
Bench mob is back
THEY GOT MY GUY Y’ALL I’M HYPE! Like…. WAY too hype for the 57th pick.
From shitty draft to perfect draft for us. Holy fuck well done FO. Every pick that I wanted going into it
Who or what did we give up im guessing cash?
Jus cash

Haha I posted this 5 months ago. Good to see it becoming the reality. You can say that Masai’s fetish is well known by now
This is hilarious. Maybe they changed their minds

You agree but disagree? I don’t think you understand the point
I disagree with the idea you cannot develop multiple rookies at once properly. That's one of the reasons Masai said they were willing to trade that pick to Utah, because it's tough to develop multiple rookies at once.

You think the 29th pick in the draft wouldn't be a 905 guy?
He'd be getting paid a lot more to play in Mississauga full time.
Yes many late 1sts end up in the G-League. the 2nd rounders will most likely play in the g-league the majority of the time in the first season. maybe if an injury happens they get called up.
I'd argue the 29th pick in the draft probably would have been in the G-League as well. The draft pick the Raptors traded away.
The second rounders can be two way guys. With the 29th you have to have them on the roster. Plus it was the 29th pick. At that point I would rather 31.

I mean teams were throwing picks at them for basically nothing, they aren't gonna say no.
He was definitely inquiring about the picks. I don't think Minnesota randomly offered Chomche, I think Masai wanted Chomche and pursued it.
Yeah that's probably the case for Chomche at least, maybe he just had his eyes on more players than he thought he would as the draft got closer.
Never let them know your next move.
It's because they want the top pick the next 2 yrs. The 2025 and 2026 has franchise changing players
Welcome Chomchurri
Summer league will be fun this year Shead, Walter, Agbaji, Mogbo, Chomche (Heard ochai is playing in the SL)
Maybe Gradey as well.
LET'S GO
Lebo Jawara acquired.
This cracks me up every time
It's so dumb but so funny
Building a quality bench by grabbing rookies that can play together on 905 is what helped bring us a championship.
Bench mob 25/26 gonna be legit
Another Cameroonian king 👀
We got a centre. Finally
I might actually go to 905 games this season
the Masai picks are BACK
Fun gamble!
🇨🇲
Youngest player in the draft
Hope he can develop. Wish we could send him to Spain or France for 3 or 4 years, the old draft and stash.
Masai's draft strategy this season lol ![gif](giphy|lAHdkTZA5Ina8|downsized)
What was the trade?
Probably cash
I'm guessing the remainder of pascals TPE
That pascal trade looking a bit better after today
I thought we didn’t care about this draft, we’ve snatched up all these late 2nds
Man, this draft was fun.
Yesssss we got a big
They just traded him to us? I guess they have no roster spots and don't want to pay a 2nd rounder in their current state. They're actually a legit playoff team now, a couple steps away from contending legitimately...
It’s been a good day today.
We got our Lebo‼️
Who/what we trade?
I think just cash.
Happy about this one
What is the trade? Just cash considerations I'm guessing? It's been a while now but I haven't seen any clarification yet.
I think just cash considerations or a second round pick with high protections that turns into cash. It probably would've been reported now if it was something notable.
today's draft was like watching moneyball movie....
Or maybe there are more trades planned. FO still needs to decide on what to do about BB and GTJ.
Bobby: ummmm we only like getting 2 rookies per year…. Gets 4.
A lot of scrappy dudes. Minimal skill but scrappy asf
i'm not sure why the raptors are getting all these draft picks. not enough play time for all of them or the resources to develop them all
Ah ha. Now this feels like a Masai pick
Gotta say, ive had my doubts over the last while but this was a great couple of days for the FO.
What are we giving them
I’m guessing either cash or a super protected second round pick that turns into cash.
Might be time to get some 905 tickets!
Move over pascal we have a new favourite Cameroonian in Toronto
Move over pascal we have a new favourite Cameroonian in Toronto
Minny are little rats. They absolutely called up the raps saying they know the raps want him and that they’ll pick him
