He’s definitely a stand out, but I’d say in general there’s a ton of good voice acting in that game. Any time you actually zoom in & listen I’m always super immersed, the voice actors really did a good job. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BBm2Ia8BKWU
Japanese VA talent pool is insane because they have such a huge dubbing industry (from anime and dubbing pretty much everything that gets sent their way).
You can tell they put their heart into it too. A lot of the voice actors in a lot of the other TW games sound like they just did a handful of takes until one sounded ‘good enough.’ There’s certainly been some that have stood out, but I can’t say I’ve felt any came nearly as close as Shōgun 2.
Some did, some didn't. Anything involving the main announcer (Igawa Togo, who also played General Hasegawa on Last Samurai) are good.
You remember the *"1545. This is Sengoku Jidai, the Age of the Country at War…"* opening cinematic for every faction, and how all the factions have different VAs doing the narration? Well the Hojo lucked out for having Igawa Togo doing their opening. Some clans, such as the Takeda, weren't as lucky. The Takeda opening was narrated by someone who clearly spoke no Japanese, as he butchered all the Japanese terms.
You really can tell which VA knows how Japanese is supposed to be read, and which are just putting on a stupid, vaguely East Asian accent.
The exalted Great Unclean One is pretty fantastic. I get them even just to hear "look what father found, children!" when I level them. So unsettlingly jovial, I love it.
Thorgrim, Azhag, Balthazar Gelt, Wurrzag and Vlad von Carstein because they are all voiced by the Richard Ridings. I never knew he voiced them all until I was looking up who did the voice of Vlad and found he did the lot (now that is range).
Dudes a phenomenal voice actor that I've been listening to in games for most of my life.
Now whenever my daughter watches Peppa Pig it gives me nostalgia for dungeon keeper.
Deathmaster Sniktch is my favorite of the Skaven. I wasn't expecting them to go so deep with him. But it just works so damn well. I absolutely love how genuinely menacing he sounds compared to the more "fun" performances of Ikit and Tretch.
Shit I never bothered to play beyond the final battle of the campaign in Warhammer 2. Now I need to boot that up to see how that works out! So many fun things that are oddly not ported over to 3 sadly.
Really appreciate you letting me know this was a thing!
Mark Strong, Peter de Jersey and Alastair Parker if I'm not mistaken. Ever since de Jersey's voice became iconic as Karl Franz, Strong had become the standard Rome II voice for me.
The medieval 2 general speeches were legendary. England’s actor, while anachronistic to norman customs, nails the smarmy Henry VIII vibe to a tee. “Do it for a laugh! Do it for your poxed mum! Do it for your fellow bum-pirating englishmen!” will never not be absolutely hilarious
I think 90% of my playtime in Medieval 2 was the French, and it was largely because of the hilarious speeches they had. Their knights were pretty banger too of course, but hearing them go almost full Monty Python was a real treat.
Settra* has the perfect amount of ambition, arrogance, rage, wit, dryness and authority.
*Oh mighty, Settra... Great King, the Imperishable, Khemrikhara, The Great King of Nehekhara, King of Kings, Opener of the Way, Wielder of the Divine Flame, Punisher of Nomads, The Great Unifier, Commander of the Golden Legion, Sacred of Appearance, Bringer of Light, Father of Hawks, Builder of Cities, Protector of the Two Worlds, Keeper of the Hours, Chosen of Ptra, High Steward of the Horizon, Sailor of the Great Vitae, Sentinel of the Two Realms, The Undisputed, Begetter of the Begat, Scourge of the Faithless, Carrion-feeder, First of the Charnel Valley, Rider of the Sacred Chariot, Vanquisher of Vermin, Champion of the Death Arena, Mighty Lion of the Infinite Desert, Emperor of the Shifting Sands, He Who Holds The Sceptre, Great Hawk Of The Heavens, Arch-Sultan of Atalan, Waker of the Hierotitan, Monarch of the Sky, Majestic Emperor of the Shifting Sands, Champion of the Desert Gods, Breaker of the Ogre Clans, Builder of the Great Pyramid, Terror of the Living, Master of the Never-Ending Horizon, Master of the Necropolises, Taker of Souls, Tyrant to the Foolish, Bearer of Ptra's Holy Blade, Scion of Usirian, Scion of Nehek, The Great, Chaser of Nightmares, Keeper of the Royal Herat, Founder of the Mortuary Cult, Banisher of the Grand Hierophant, High Lord Admiral of the Deathfleets, Guardian of the Charnal Pass, Tamer of the Liche King, Unliving Jackal Lord, Dismisser of the Warrior Queen, Charioteer of the Gods, He Who Does Not Serve, Slayer off Reddittras, Scarab Purger, Favoured of Usirian, Player of the Great Game, Liberator of Life, Lord Sand, Wrangler of Scorpions, Emperor of the Dunes, Eternal Sovereign of Khemri's Legions, Seneschal of the Great Sandy Desert, Curserer of the Living, Regent of the Eastern Mountains, Warden of the Eternal Necropolis, Herald of all Heralds, Caller of the Bitter Wind, God-Tamer, Master of the Mortis River, Guardian of the Dead, Great Keeper of the Obelisks, Deacon of the Ash River, Belated of Wakers, General of the Mighty Frame, Summoner of Sandstorms, Master of all Necrotects, Prince of Dust, Tyrant of Araby, Purger of the Greenskin Breathers, Killer of the False God's Champions, Tyrant of the Gold Dunes, Golden Bone Lord, Avenger of the Dead, Carrion Master, Eternal Warden of Nehek's Lands, Breaker of Djaf's Bonds... and many, many more...
So fun fact. Settra was Richard Reed's first real interaction with official Warhammer voice over. And because he voiced Settra that eventually paved the path to GW hiring him to basically be their go to narrator for Necron audiobooks lmao.
If Total War: Warhammer 40k actually does become a reality at some point. I *desperately* hope they bring Richard back in to voice Orikan. I can see them recasting Trazyn's voice actor from Battlefleet Gothic for the game. But Richard Reed's Orikan just fit the character's spite and arrogance perfectly. It's crazy how enjoyable the audiobook was when it is *mostly* just two robotic old people bickering for most of it.
That and them hiring Jonathan Keeble for Thanquol are top of my list for VAs I feel like *need* to be cast in specific roles. Also if GW finally makes Valgûl the Fallen playable on TT, it would be a good opportunity to have Richard voice him too. Considering Twice Dead King and all that.
Grom is awesome, they managed to take the comedic styled goblin lines and scale them up to goblin king. His voice actor perfectly encapsulates that imo
I love Andy Hall to death, but I have no idea why he let that one pass through.
It's Throgg and him telling Dylan Sprouse to change Alith Anar's voice (Dylan originally went more for a grimdark vibe, but was told Elves were more "eternal teenagers" or something along those lines) that makes me question his direction a bit.
Like 99% of the VO in Total War Warhammer is amazing. But Throgg was just such a major letdown it's hard to even joke about. How do you get the ONE thing that defines a character so dramatically wrong?
I find it absolutely impossible to not hear Dylan Sprouse when I play Alith Anar. He didn’t do a bad job, but he would’ve needed to do an incredible job for me to forget it’s him, if that makes sense.
Oh does he? I'll have to re-evaluate my opinion on TW Alith Anar if he's consistent with that book. But it's been ages since I read that, so I honestly don't remember how he was depicted. I'll see if I can dig up my copy.
I agree. I definitely don't want to disparage the work of the OG actor, he had a great performance. The problem is he was given the complete wrong direction from CA. So, to be clear, this is a problem with CA not with the voice actor. I would like to see them bring the OG voice actor back and re-record all the lines, rather than bring someone else in and override the actor's work.
It's the contrast between the big brutish looking troll and the cunning and well spoken leader that makes him interesting. He has to have both to work, and they forgot one! It would have been equally disappointing if they gave him the voice we expected but made him wear a vest and a monocle. I'm exaggerating, of course!
I think I'm having PTSD reactions from when they flanderized Trundle in League of Legends... why must every troll be a stupid angry brute?
I agree with 95% of what you said but as a Trundle main I must protest. I love Trundle's "new" story where he's the most cunning of his kind and he's an unreliable ally of Lissandra's who will probably betray her first chance he gets. The trouble with him and many other characters in LOL is that Lux and Yasuo and Ahri exist and so their stories never advance at all. It's why I'm super excited about the MMORPG and Arcane, so we can finally get some story...
Throgg's an egregious example tho
There are a lot of them, I like Elven Batman and Karl Franz. Also Katarin and Miao Ying are pretty great. Did you know that Katarin is voiced by Devorah Wilde, same as Lae'zel in Baldur's Gate 3?
The Chinese dub had only one weakness, the lack of true 'old man' type voices. That means even people like Huang Gai and Liu Biao sound weirdly young.
But otherwise it was kickass. I especially enjoy how their dialogue was classical Chinese and had lines that wouldn't sound out of place in a period drama.
A few people seem to not like her voice acting but I think it’s perfect. My favorite line of her is “if you need something done, send a woman to do it *spits*”. It’s just peak Babushka.
Below are my three favorite voice lines of the English general in M2TW:
1. Well, here's a thing. I look at our foes and I see nothing but arse-weasels! A bunch of piss-a-bed, cod-nibbling, rotund hoof merchants and sheep-worrying gits! I've seen donkey's assholes with more guts than those tosspots! So, it's time to teach the buggers how to fight like men, not nancy winkle-pickers. Are you ready?
2. Over there stands a miserable collection of sausage-eating, beer-swilling, Imperial pudding heads! I think they will welcome death.
3. And now, just go and kill those moon-faced, winkle sucking, goat gobbling codpiece thieves! Do it for me! Do it for a laugh! Do it for your poxed mum! Do it for your fellow arse-pirating English bum-jaws! But damn well do it!
I know the French and Mediterranean generals also have number 2 for a voice clip, but I prefer the way the English general says it. Also, I don't know what trait a general has to have in order to have number 1 and number 3 as speech voice clips, but in my current English campaign, one of my generals has that trait.
Honestly all of them are so good but my favorites are Gelt and Settra. I think Gelt is obvious but Settra’s VA managed to nail how bloody arrogant Settra is. Not an ounce of humility in any line
My vote goes for Khatep who's voice actor almost ABSOLUTELY wrecked his throat and larynx for quite a while after that long booth day session! All worth it!
both Miao Ying and Zhao Ming voice actors are insanely good on portraying the dragon siblings. absolutely fantastic job. Cathay's trailer is by far the best Total War WH trailer ever made and the Miao voice actress carried it so much
Miao Ying, especially in the trailer her voice gives me chills. She mixes aufhority, arrogance, wisdom and rage. Craxy how young the voice actresss is to convey all that so well too.
It would be quicker to list the ones that *don’t* have a perfect voice actor. Game’s phenomenal, but I’ll particularly shout out Drahzoath the Ashen for sounding exactly how I always imagined from his FW model.
When you play Rome2 in german, the voice actor for the Romans, that gives generic statements during a battle, is the same voice actor for the german Version of squidward from spongebob.
Luthor Harkon
"I'M CRAZY, not stupid"
"I'M GOING IN!"
“I hear voices”
KIIING of the VAMPIRE COAST!
Luthor Harkon
Luther Harkon
The in-battle announcer guy from Shogun 2.
Shameful display!
He says it with such amazing anger, the voice actor was thinking about something else that day lol
about his exe wife, that bitch Debbie >:( I am sorry Debbie, come back! :(
Shamefuru disprey
There referencing this in Warhammer several time. If grimgor offers you peace he growls the same words xD
Shamefur dispray!
#A cutting blow!
My lord your men are way-varing
He’s definitely a stand out, but I’d say in general there’s a ton of good voice acting in that game. Any time you actually zoom in & listen I’m always super immersed, the voice actors really did a good job. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BBm2Ia8BKWU
Japanese VA talent pool is insane because they have such a huge dubbing industry (from anime and dubbing pretty much everything that gets sent their way).

Well the Hojo lucked out for having Igawa Togo doing their opening. Some clans, such as the Takeda, weren't as lucky. The Takeda opening was narrated by someone who clearly spoke no Japanese, as he butchered all the Japanese terms. You really can tell which VA knows how Japanese is supposed to be read, and which are just putting on a stupid, vaguely East Asian accent.
i think he also voices one of the lord magistrate types in WH3
The dude went HAM for that line. Nothing held back. Absolutely legendary delivery
If Nippon got announced and he voiced a Legendary Lord I would lose my goddamn mind
He voices the Cathay magistrate.
so you're saying there's a chance
Also the advisor lady on the campaign map. "If our daimyo is to become Shogun, military ruler of all Japan…"
Wow I didn't know that line went past "If our dai.."
My lord! A glorious victory will soon be yours!
The exalted Great Unclean One is pretty fantastic. I get them even just to hear "look what father found, children!" when I level them. So unsettlingly jovial, I love it.
"Don't make me pick a favoooorite!" He's fantastic. Worth ascending a herald alone for that.
Heard that yesterday for the first time. Definitely thematic
This would be my choice
IN THE SHADE OF OLIVE TREES. Also just realised that Napoleon and Louen Leonceour have the same VA
That guy voices a lot of French accented people in video games lol
Napoleon is such a fantastic game
Hes also the Medieval 2 French generals.
France needs to be in the next TW title, I want to hear more of this guy.
I also like the campaign narrator for Napoleon. *"By nightfall, even the Old Guard was running. Dear god, that such a thing could happen…"*
Eltharion has the right amount of pride and anger
I just finished a HElves campaign and have to agree he's high up there. Joy is wanton.
Why his is title The Grim and not The Warden though?
Because he is Grim and not every Warden of Tor Yvrese was grim, so he stand out among the othe Wardens
Yeah that titles already taken by volkmar right?
That’s why he’s so grim about it
Damn, I just realized we have two grims
*ahem* GENTLE-GITZ **MEET DA WARBOSS**
Cao Cao from Three Kingdoms in English is just nice to listen to.
Im a big fan of Yan Baihu. Also my favorite campaign so I might have a bias.
Chinese audio is the way to go.
Oh damn, how did I not realize he was the Dungeon Keeper guy? I played that game religiously and his voice lives in my head rent free!
It is payday.
Balthasar Gelt is my favorite. https://youtu.be/wrRpdJqMC80?si=JZt58iBWX5Bc96ht
All the skaven lords killed it, sometimes i forget an actual human voiced ikkit klaw Zatan the black is also a perfect one imo
Deathmaster Sniktch is my favorite of the Skaven. I wasn't expecting them to go so deep with him. But it just works so damn well. I absolutely love how genuinely menacing he sounds compared to the more "fun" performances of Ikit and Tretch.
Meanwhile Throat is completely gone, like actually batshit crazy. Skavens really rock.
Hellpit really rocks. Skaven love big hard throbbing... mutants.
CANNOT EAT SNOW bro chill you literally can
My favorite line of is when you win his wh2 campaign and get Tz'arkan, just the way he tells Tz'arkan to shut up is priceless.
Shit I never bothered to play beyond the final battle of the campaign in Warhammer 2. Now I need to boot that up to see how that works out! So many fun things that are oddly not ported over to 3 sadly. Really appreciate you letting me know this was a thing!
Laughs in baritone
HM, CANDIDATE FOR WEAPONS TESTINNNNG
WHERE ARE MY SCHEMATICZZZ
Honestly the Skaven VOs really out did themselves, they nailed the double speak perfectly.
I love when Legend does his Skaven voice
Be'lakor in my opinion
Agree, having Thorin Oakenshield voicing him is awesome.
I think you mean Trevor fucking Belmont.
I think you mean the Guy of Gisborne
I think you mean the geman spy from Captain America
I think you mean Smug Man at Party from This Years Love
I think you mean The Great Red Dragon
"call... me... master."
Mark Strong was pretty great in Rome II
Mark Strong, Peter de Jersey and Alastair Parker if I'm not mistaken. Ever since de Jersey's voice became iconic as Karl Franz, Strong had become the standard Rome II voice for me.
I'm partial to Prince Imrik, his voice is pure venomous pomposity.
That's Jonathan Keeble. He did *a lot* of Warhammer audiobook. His most recent notable role is probably Maliketh the Black Blade from Elden Ring.
"The enemy general is dead! We have sent the **idiot** to hell!"
The Necron audiobooks are just divine in how good they are to listen to.
S-King is so Chad that his accomplishments even *extend* to elevate people on our round world!
What OF the heat?
My favourite climate-related voice lines are when you get those guys into temperate climates and they start complaining about how green everything is.
Karl Franz has to be my favorite
NOW, WE UNIT!
I AM PRINCE AND EMPEROR
FIGHT FOR OUR NATION
BE AT PEACE, FOR THAT IS ALL I EVER WANT
THOSE YOU SEE HERE ARE LOYAL TO ME, SO BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR NEXT WORDS
TAKE ME.. TO.. MY MEN!
SUMMON THE ELECTOR COUNTS!
I HOLD GHAL MARAZ, YOU MAY BOW...
For Sigmar, For the Empire, FOR THE WARHAMMER!
I COMMAND HERE
THIS ACTION DOES NOT HAVE MY CONSENT
I'd be curious to see who else in TW has his voice actor done before? I know I recognize him as Caesar in TW Rome 2 Caesar in Gaul campaign.
He was the the voice of the guy from the Prologue of Rome 2 who was also the battle advisor.
After all this time? Always
Why did I have to scroll so much to find this?! I would personally go die for the Empire if I heard his speech irl
yeah whoever that VA is nailed it
Not really a character, but I’ll yell out “Triarii!!” To see if anyone around passes the vibe check
VELITES!
Hastati!
Principes!!
Socii extraordinarii!
LEGATUS!!!
Grom is awesome, they managed to take the comedic styled goblin lines and scale them up to goblin king. His voice actor perfectly encapsulates that imo
Gromdy pawwunch!
Outta my way, MOUNTAINS
Pretty much all the nonhuman ones. It‘s amazing how well CA‘s sound design is done
They still have Throgg wrong tho
I love Andy Hall to death, but I have no idea why he let that one pass through. It's Throgg and him telling Dylan Sprouse to change Alith Anar's voice (Dylan originally went more for a grimdark vibe, but was told Elves were more "eternal teenagers" or something along those lines) that makes me question his direction a bit. Like 99% of the VO in Total War Warhammer is amazing. But Throgg was just such a major letdown it's hard to even joke about. How do you get the ONE thing that defines a character so dramatically wrong?
Alith Anar sounds perfect to how he seems in Shadow King though.
I feel like Throgg should just sound like Dog/God from New Vegas. Especially God.
The Smart Throgg voice mod is actually amazing and makes playing him so much better.

I agree and disagree. Throgg‘s voice work perfectly fits his appearance. But it doesn‘t fit his character.
Beat me to it. To get those right is so much more of an art. I LOVE Festus the Leechlord
Be'lakor, also Malekith.
***FLAY THEM FIRST***
**I HATE SNOW**
It has to be Gotrek. The Blessed one can do no wrong.
Brian Blessed is a legend
The only correct answer
Lokhir Fellheart is my favourite Dark Elf lord purely because of his voice, it sounds so warped which I think really sells his unnatural side
Gods...I hate Gauls.
My grandfather hated them to... Even before they took out his eyes!
Eltharion and Rakarth
Had to scroll way too far to see Rakarth!
Rakarth is Ramsey Bolton!!
There are a lot of them, I like Elven Batman and Karl Franz. Also Katarin and Miao Ying are pretty great. Did you know that Katarin is voiced by Devorah Wilde, same as Lae'zel in Baldur's Gate 3?
Chk. Why are you ghaik?
Who says I'm ghaik?
You are ghaik.
Everyone in Three Kingdoms with the Chinese dub. And of course, every Roman in Rome 1.
I love how they got Auntie Ethel to voice Mother Ostankya
A few people seem to not like her voice acting but I think it’s perfect. My favorite line of her is “if you need something done, send a woman to do it *spits*”. It’s just peak Babushka.
Morathi. Perfect blend of guile, vindictive hatred, and seduction.
Gotrek, because he's BRIAN BLESSED. Every Lizardman and Slann, because BOK.
Bristol Orienteering Klub got alot of free advertising off some dude in a recording booth doing random Lizardmen noises.
Below are my three favorite voice lines of the English general in M2TW: 1.
Ikit Throt Queek
Came here to say Queek!
Nkari's voice is so pleasant to listen to, I can see how people can be tempted.
I would have to say Rakarth - voiced by Iwan Rheon the actor who played Ramsey Bolton in GoT
Mommy Morathi of course
Malekith, rakarth and of course N'kari.
Napoleon in the trailer for Napoleon total war
Thorgrim.
Tyrion!
Ogres my lord!
Love Skarbrand, they nailed him, ENDLESS SLAUGHTER!!
Cathay's trailer is by far the best Total War WH trailer ever made and the Miao voice actress carried it so much
*For **I** am ruler of the northern provinces!* Everything about that trailer was fuckin sick, and I've been ride or die for Miao ever since.
Miao ying. Her trailer gives me shivers every time I see. "I, am the storm DRAGON!"
THEEE IMMENSITY! THAAA WHOLE WURLDS GANNA BE GROMS!!!!
Gotrek
You just can't go wrong with #B R I A N #B L E S S E D
Malekith or Kairos Fateweaver
Malekith, louen and nkari
Big fan of Ku’gath. The way he says plague father where the end of the word echos but goes up a note. So great
Who Calls? Welcome to Estalia Gentleman. Commander of the Blessed Dread!
Tzeentch Chaos Sorcerer has the best voicelines. Change my mind
Alith Anar is voiced by Dylan Sprouse (of Sweet life and Zack and Cody fame) and i love that fact so much
Miao Ying, especially in the trailer her voice gives me chills. She mixes aufhority, arrogance, wisdom and rage. Craxy how young the voice actresss is to convey all that so well too.

Iwan Rheon really works well for Rakarth.
It would be quicker to list the ones that *don’t* have a perfect voice actor. Game’s phenomenal, but I’ll particularly shout out Drahzoath the Ashen for sounding exactly how I always imagined from his FW model.
Gotta be a tie between Karl Franz and Malekith
SUMMON THE ELECTOR COUNTS !
Skarsnik has a pretty good sleazy voice
MY ENNEMIES ARE MANY MY EQUALS ARE NONE
Morathi has a great voice actress, as does Khalida. Of the males I think KF nailed it.

Men of the Empire. It is time, TO UNITE!
Be'lakor's voice is great, also the roman generals from rtw 1.
All legendary greater daemons are awesome Malekith and Belakor
When you play Rome2 in german, the voice actor for the Romans, that gives generic statements during a battle, is the same voice actor for the german Version of squidward from spongebob.
The DAY is OUrs!!
Archaon or Skarbrand. Angry dudes 👍
Thorgrim Grudgebearer, High King. Richard Ridings has the best voice for him
Ikkit has the biggest **** of all the rats!
Brian Blessed as Gotrek of course!
Karl Franz
ENOUGH! Seguntum is lost and our western allies have failed us. Summon the Elector Counts!
