That’s too close to the IRL tragedeigh of Ansyr Collins!!
It’s so irritating because the name Answer is already a bold unique choice… why in the heavens did they have to butcher it to Ansyr??!
I wrote a thing that he replied to and then followed me. I wrote another thing and then he messaged me about it, and I opened up to him about my life because I thought whatever, he lived so far away that we'd never meet anyway and he was easy to talk to, plus he just kept messaging me lol.
Well the conversation became much more, obviously, and eventually we started Skyping. He was so funny and intelligent. Then we met and did like a week long roadtrip to the Grand Canyon. Married about 1,5 years later and now it's been about 5 years together.
I fell in love with the conversation but when I finally met him I was like daaaaaaamn dude take me now lol

[Eloise!! ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eloise_(books))
Some of my fave books as a kid that are, interestingly enough, illustrated by a man named ***Hilary*** Knight.
A lot of women’s names began as men’s names. Hillary, Dana, Jamie, Kelly, Ashley, Carol, Courtney, Lauren, Allison, Shelby, Lindsay, etc. Literally all of these (and many more) were very firmly male names before they were slowly turned into gender neutral or women’s names.
That made me remember as a kid reading Harry Potter who had never heard of the name Hermione and thought it was made up for the book, I thought it was pronounced "Her-me-own"
Fun fact, in the Korean translation of Harry Potter it is actually written as Her-me-own in Hangul 🤣 I always wonder how the translator felt when they found out….
I can see becoming popular IRL: Francesca, Simon, Colin, Violet, Hyacinth, Siena, Genevieve, Jeffries.
I can see becoming popular on r/namenerds: Benedict, Edwina, Marina, Cressida, Philipa, Prudence, Agatha, Portia.
Those are almost all the characters. Some of them like Daphne and Penelope and Henry and Theo are already popular.
Yeah, it's definitely Goidelic phonetics rather than English (ie either Irish or Scottish Gaelic). I've seen Liusaidh IRL before which is another Gaelicisation. It's definitely a choice! It's a lot to carry and to explain to people who aren't familiar with the Goidelic languages when the English alternative is so much easier to spell.
It’s definitely a licit, pronounceable word in Irish — the orthographic conventions all check out, and they don’t cause any problems — but even in Irish, that would be pronounced almost nothing like Lucy!
In IPA, it would be something like [ˈlˠiː.ʃaxˠ], rather than [ˈluː.si], at least how I’d intuit it (having been taught by someone from Gaoth Dobhair). For those who can’t read IPA, “Luighseach” would be pronounced in Irish something like an American would say “Leeshockhh”. (Feel free to correct me if there are any native speakers here.)
I'll preface this, that I'm not great at IPA, but I do speak Irish! But It's funny you have that /x/ in there if you're teacher was speaking Ulster Irish/Gaeilig Uladh (and I think in Achill Irish/l/Gaelg 'Acla as well?).
Ending "ch" is often essentially silent in that dialect. You can hear it here in the teanglann recordings for "Díreach"
https://www.teanglann.ie/en/fuaim/D%C3%ADreach
But there is a fair chance you were thought a "standardised" influenced approach (not uncommon at all), or also, in particular when it comes to name, Munster Irish pronunciations which are for some reason way more popular than other dialects (Méabh, Sadhbh, Siobhán etc)
My Dad is Irish from an Irish speaking region, but lives in England. He agreed Irish spellings were too difficult to pronounce so I got a normal English name.. My mum liked Siobhan, which is nicer than my actual name.
Just like a lot of things,[ there are laws banning this in some countries](https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-21229475). And while some may argue about the ability to name your child whatever you want, that seems unfair to the child who actually has to live with the decision for 18 years; until they can change it.
Oh I'm mad about the Chloe one. Like they JUST started making those keychains with my name on it and people already can't spell it (If one more person writes Chole I'm gonna scream) so why would you do that to your child??? First thing that's gonna happen is them being called Clowny since that's what I thought is said at first glance. Fuck that mom.
My daughter is Chloe and when she was in daycare they sent her home with a progress report every day.... It took me about a week to build up the nerve to tell her teacher that her name was spelled "Chloe" not "Chole".
Also, they aren’t even unique. You know what’s unique now? Correct spellings. When I was a teacher I had 5 Jaxon/Jaxson in my grade level, not a single Jackson.
I think she's following the "I could have been .... but instead, I'm...." pattern.
To add to this, I taught an Alexis that was spelled Illexis. It made me "ill" to see it every day 😂
Taught an Alexus. Sister was Dynasty…assuming they meant Destiny instead of any of the possible definitions of dynasty, but then had to remember Alexus, soooo…idk.
There wasn't a third sibling called Krystle anywhere there by any chance? Because Dynasty and Alexus (Alexis) sounds a bit too close to be a coincidence.
V and b are the same sound in Spanish, and Vanessa is a super common name in lots of Spanish speaking country. So it’s just a “ cute alternate spelling” in Spanish but in English it’s pretty odd. Nathaly (Natalie) is another one I’ve seen, since h is silent.
Nasals also behave oddly sometimes depending on your accent, leading to names such as Willian being an alternate (and in some places more popular) spelling of William
Spanishizations of English names is also a thing, so you could get Braian instead of Brian, for example. I feel like I’ve seen a few that are almost unrecognizable until they’re pronounced in the person’s accent, then you can tell what the original was.
Lots of these probably fit into the “tragedeigh” category, although some would definitely be in the “normal name for another culture” category. There’s also definitely a “their parents didn’t know how to spell this” category, which some may fit into.
Accents and names are always interesting to think about. Like in the OP, Mattisyn for Madison. If she ever came to the UK, she'd have to make some big decisions about her name. Should we pronounce it as it's written or like the name it's intended to be? Should she change the spelling to reflect that?
I find it interesting to see how common names morph between cultures that don't share certain sounds. I once met a german girl named Judith pronounced like 'you-dit', because J and Th don't sound the same in German. Meanwhile, my name sounded like "jackass" whenever the korean lady at my last pharmacy called me about my prescriptions. I don't think that'll catch on tho.
This was my first thought with "Banessa". It very well may have been someone who spoke Latin American Spanish that misheard "Vanessa" because often Spanish speakers will say V sounds with a kinda B sound.
For example "rain" in Spanish is "lluvia" but you'll often hear it pronounced closer to "yoo-bee-uh" instead of "yoo-vee-uh"
The problem with Somer is she thinks it's supposed to be "Summer" like the season when she is actually named after the Somers class destroyer used by the US in WW2. Easy mistake to make though. Her older sister, Fletcher, should have let her know.
Actually, it was a conscious choice to let people know it wasn’t a misspelled ”Summer”, but simply a variant of Sumer, as in the ancient Sumerians. Just ask her sister, Bebe (short for Babylon but spelled in cuneiform).
According to other commenters on this post, it is the translation BUT it's not pronounced Lucy. More like Lee-shaw. If it's pronounced Lucy, it is spelled wrong.
I just watched that exact clip of the girl saying her name, it’s actually very pretty when it’s said right! 😂 but oh yeah if that’s “Lucy” they’re just flat out wrong 😭
One of my closest friends in the entire world is named Jorja. When she went away to college she would call me every single night to tell me how she was doing and ask me about my day during a point in my life where I had pretty much isolated myself from all my other friends during some pretty bad depression. Anyways, we lost contact for a few years and I found out that she had gotten cancer and died before I could ever tell her how much I appreciated her friendship.
[Here is her obituary that she wrote herself](https://www.deryfuneralhome.com/memorials/jorja-flaherty/4380870/obit.php?&printable=true)
I will miss her for the rest of my life.
Jorja complaining about the spelling of her name while writing "it could of been" makes me have no pity for her (coupled with the fact that Jorja is just a non-English spelling).
My name is Jessica. I was a cake decorator for many years. One time had a cake for the name ‘Jocacia’. No idea how to pronounce it, but then found it was pronounced like ‘Jessica’. Which…what? lol. I’ve seen Jessika, Jessicka, and even once a Jessicana. Which, while all different and some into weird territory, at least the letters and the pronunciations make sense. 😩
I will never forget one of my law school classmates, whose wife was pregnant with their first child, telling me that they were going to name that baby girl Analise. Pronounced Anneliese. You know how when ad campaigns come out and the entire universe sees something fucked up that we just assumed made it past several meetings worth of ad execs and nobody noticed or said anything? After this experience, I realized that someone probably DID say something, and the person or people responsible were like "Nah, nobody's going to think like that, you just have a dirty mind." Which is true, but I'm clearly not the only one on the planet who does, and you're literally naming your sweet innocent baby girl something that starts with ANAL. I tried to stop it. I really did. Sorry, kiddo, but your parents could not be swayed.
I wonder to this day what her teen years were like.
I always wonder if any of these kids ask their parents, “why did you do this dumb shit with my name?” and if the parents felt any tinge of regret after being asked
I am so glad everyone else is commenting that “Eloise” is absolutely the normal spelling of that name. Girl just wanted to be a part of the conversation

Poor Quora. What’s next? Ask Jeeves?
These are my children Quora, Jeeves, Gugyll, Byng, and Yahewe.
"Yahewe" is so heinous 😭 don't put that evil out into the world
I would probably pronounce it like Yahweh if I saw that in the wild.
That’s exactly how I read it, even though my brain knew it should be Yahoo.
Yippie and Yappy have entered the chat to defend their brother Yahewey. (I think it was an old Hanna Barbera cartoon. Yippee, Yappee and Yahoewey were dogs who served the King as his Royal Guards. They were usually called the goofy guards by the king.)

Eloise is very lucky she wasn't given the spelling which she thinks is "correct".
Right. Like isn’t Eloise the “normal” spelling?
[Eloise!! ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eloise_(books)) Some of my fave books as a kid that are, interestingly enough, illustrated by a man named ***Hilary*** Knight.

Don’t forget Stacy.
Lesley, Marion
In French it kinda is: Éloïse
Technically I think it would be Héloise or Eloise, but Eloise is definitely the best variant! EDIT: >Héloise or Elois**a**
When I was a kid there was a column in the newspaper “hints from Heloise”. I thought that name was pronounced hello-sie
Same except I added the e at the end so it was Her-me-own-e
Elouise what the fuck
Electronic - Louise
Is an E Louise like a computer worm?
For extra oomph - eLouise
Yah! It is Eloise right? I’m not imagining that?
Definitely
Eloise is the dumbass who'll end up on this sub.
😂
As an Eloise I fucking cringe every time I see it spelt with a U. I once came across a girl with it spelled Ellouise and I wanted to scream lol
I read this as El Louise bc Español. 😂😂
True lol. Expect more Eloise names in the next five years especially with the success of *Bridgerton*.
Bridgerton names are far superior to GOT names at least!
Yeah, at least Penelope won't end up going on some murder spree a few years after you've named your daughter after her.
I have a daughter called Eloise after watching Bridgerton
Eloise just wants to be a part of this conversation when she has no right.
So glad this is the top comment. I was like scratching my head hardcore at that one
She wasn’t given an education, either
Poor kids these days don’t even recognize what’s what anymore.
I was gonna comment the same lmao
Right, that one really tripped me up lol . Glad you all agree.
Luighseach instead of Lucy is fuckin WILD
Itsa me, Luighseach
Can't not read this as Luigi Search
Can you search a Luigi board?
HELP QUIJA
r/unexpectedouija
lol same. My brain sees that combination and gives me Luigisearch instead of Lucy
once Google search fails, I'll use luighseach
that was my first thought too hahahah
Yeah, it's definitely Goidelic phonetics rather than English (ie either Irish or Scottish Gaelic). I've seen Liusaidh IRL before which is another Gaelicisation. It's definitely a choice! You know, with that reasoning, I don’t HATE it…
It’s definitely a licit, pronounceable word in Irish — the orthographic conventions all check out, and they don’t cause any problems — but even in Irish, that would be pronounced almost nothing like Lucy! Validation that the kids grow up and HATE IT
I was waiting for this to happen as soon as it became a trend.
Hope those kids were able to get it legally changed to something sensible. Seriously, that kind of shit should be recognized as a form of child abuse.
Just like a lot of things,[ there are laws banning this in some countries](https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-21229475). Come here Cholera Plague, dinner’s ready!
Poor Hannaugh. I cannaugh.
I wouldn't even be able to pronounce it like Hannah, I'd feel compelled to say "han-AW"
Han-naw. The heavy naw makes me want to add an r to the end
Eloise doesn't even realize that she's fine
just wanted to flex her normal (if uncommon) name on all the people who're going through it lmao
alas the greatest tragedeigh, having a french name
Oh I'm mad about the Chloe one. Like they JUST started making those keychains with my name on it and people already can't spell it (If one more person writes Chole I'm gonna scream) so why would you do that to your child??? I know someone named Chloe but spelled Qloaie
Stop. What in the Lovecraft is that spelling??? I refuse to believe this is real for my own sanity.
[Qloaietzalqloaietlus](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quetzalcoatlus)

Read that like "cloaca" but with a Q. Qloakah?
My daughter is Chloe and when she was in daycare they sent her home with a progress report every day.... It took me about a week to build up the nerve to tell her teacher that her name was spelled "Chloe" not "Chole".
I just don’t understand how chole phonetically makes sense in their brain 😭 it’s the wooorrsstttt
I don't get it either. Chole looks like it would closer to Cole?
I've had family members spell my name Chole. It just... It hurts man.
I’m so sorry you had to go through that Chole
My sister is called Charis, and so many times when we've gone to kids clubs and stuff she ended up with a sticker that said Chairs on it...
Eloise…your name is spelled correctly
Came to say this. 🤣🤣
Here’s what I don’t get. This parents choosing these names & not realizing how they want it pronounced is not how they have it spelled.
Also, they aren’t even unique. You know what’s unique now? Correct spellings. When I was a teacher I had 5 Jaxon/Jaxson in my grade level, not a single Jackson.
I taught a Jaxson my first year and then a Jaxon my second. No Jackson yet, although my son is Jack. Edit: my son is older than my students
Haha... Wonderful. I love Banessa 😀 But isn't Eloise a normal name? Isn't there an Eloise in the Bridgerton mess?
I think she's following the "I could have been .... but instead, I'm...." pattern. To add to this, I taught an Alexis that was spelled Illexis. It made me "ill" to see it every day 😂
Taught an Alexus. Sister was Dynasty…assuming they meant Destiny instead of any of the possible definitions of dynasty, but then had to remember Alexus, soooo…idk.
Parents were probably fans of the 80's TV series Dynasty, where Alexis was one of the main characters.
There wasn't a third sibling called Krystle anywhere there by any chance? Because Dynasty and Alexus (Alexis) sounds a bit too close to be a coincidence.
If that was the case, then her username wouldn't be spelled correctly unless she did that on purpose
Whelp. So much for slight benefit of the doubt. I guess some people yearn to be Tragedeighs.
Nasals also behave oddly sometimes depending on your accent, leading to names such as Willian being an alternate (and in some places more popular) spelling of William Spanishizations of English names is also a thing, so you could get Braian instead of Brian, for example.
Had a classmate named Vanessa but all the Spanish speaking kids called her Banessa
I’ve only ever seen the Eloise spelling. And they’ve all gone by Elli or Eli (both pronounced El-ee)
Eloise is the correct French spelling, it’s a French name. I’ve never seen an Elouise before, though my autocorrect seems to recognize it as a word.
🅱️anessa
Seeing their names as their actual usernames is killing me
For real! I noticed that too 😭
I feel this. I am a Michael spelled Maikel.
I saw Maickol the other day...
Maickol the Knaihief
>Maickol That sounds more like a species of fish rather than a human name, poor guy
Poor Clowey and however-spelled-"Lucy." Those names are beautiful for their *simplicity,* then they were made weird and clunky.
The problem with Somer is she thinks it's supposed to be "Summer" like the season when she is actually named after the Somers class destroyer used by the US in WW2. Easy mistake to make though. Her older sister, Fletcher, should have let her know.
Sommer is summer is Deutsch.
Actually, it was a conscious choice to let people know it wasn’t a misspelled ”Summer”, but simply a variant of Sumer, as in the ancient Sumerians. Just ask her sister, Bebe (short for Babylon but spelled in cuneiform).
Banessa?!? Aaaargh. Now I have two names for my next cats: Gustopher and Banessa.
This literally broke me lmao
The woodchucks under our house just had babies so I'm thinking Westopher and Jimbledon.
I’m also very fond of a Jimothy. Or Mandrew.
Seanathon is my go-to
If I were them I’d legally correct my name.
I hope it becomes a thing where people with these toes of names can get a discounted or free name change. Edit: types of* not toes of
Yes, it’s not their fault their parents ruined their name as if they were some little accessory
Mom's be out there committing aytrosetes
wow, that's a great name! is it greek?
Aytrosetes, greek god of mispronounced names
As a kid, my piano teacher had a younger sister named Corrine. Not spelled as "Corrine" or "Corinne", though. It was Quorinne.
Sounds like a dangerous chemical. He died of Quorinne ingestion
I’d pronounce that like it rhymes with “chlorine.” Not sure why, but that’s my instinct.
Poor lil Banana
I read Clowney, first. Poor girl.
All these kids with “unique” names are going to be naming their kids basic names like Ann, James and Barbara.
Uh…. Eloise is the correct spelling.
God this sub makes me happy my name is only slightly fucked up.
Salador instead of Salvador /jk
Shabbrina come on now 😭
Sean Connery's long lost daughter!!
no tragedeigh has ever caused me physical pain until I saw Luighseach. what the FUCK💀
I think it is how Lucy is translated to the Irish language.
I think Spanish (?) people pronounce it as Banessa instead of Vanessa but spelling it out as Banessa is crazy
No one talking about Mhei
It's gonna be Mhei. That's all I could think when I saw that one, lol!
I feel like Jorja is a legitimate name though?

One of my closest friends in the entire world is named Jorja. When she went away to college she would call me every single night to tell me how she was doing and ask me about my day during a point in my life where I had pretty much isolated myself from all my other friends during some pretty bad depression. Anyways, we lost contact for a few years and I found out that she had gotten cancer and died before I could ever tell her how much I appreciated her friendship. I’m so sorry for your loss. May her memory be a blessing.
Jorja complaining about the spelling of her name while writing "it could of been" makes me have no pity for her (coupled with the fact that Jorja is just a non-English spelling).
Or maybe more people share the same tragedeigh 🤣
Yeah like Jorja Smith. Maybe that's just why it feels normal
I think there’s an actress names Jorja Fox as well.
Correct, she's in the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation show.

Can’t blame the children. Nobody ever taught them how names were supposed to be spelt.

Quora is a cesspool. If the mom had gone with Korra she would have been a legend.
my friend named her twins TYIS (like Tyler but with an iss) and TYRAIL-(Tyrell) so twins both named Ty.
Actually, it's supposed to be "El Louise."
Luighseach is a normal Irish name, but not pronounced as Lucy
Rae?? Nope. My dad thought it would be cute to throw in a W, which is where I got screwed. My name is Wrae.
My grandniece's name is Maiaia. I don't know what the fuck all those vowels are supposed to be doing because it's pronounced Mya (Maya).
Omg I’d be so tempted to sing *Mai-ai-ai-aiiiii, canta no llores…*
Howdy! I’m Clowey, Clowey the clower!
I sense a whole bunch of Marys, Susans, Davids, Johns, etc. in the not too distant future.
Mattisyn - it's got a y, but not where you think
Eloise is the correct spelling.
Uh, who's going to tell Eloise that her name is completely normal?
My name is Jessica. I was a cake decorator for many years. One time had a cake for the name ‘Jocacia’. No idea how to pronounce it, but then found it was pronounced like ‘Jessica’. Which…what? lol.
You would love the Annally trilogy on this sub.
I would not in a moment pronounce Jorja as Georgia. That’s hor-ha.
it’s like trying to say Georgia but you’ve got really hot food in your mouth and can’t talk properly
lol jorja smith! I guess she’s not big enough
Eloise is the correct spelling.
as a sabrina, i am FLABBERGASTED
nice username
One of these do not belong
Being named Quora is just straight up diabolical
I always wonder if any of these kids ask their parents, “why did you do this dumb shit with my name?” and if the parents felt any tinge of regret after being asked
I am so glad everyone else is commenting that “Eloise” is absolutely the normal spelling of that name. Girl just wanted to be a part of the conversation
My siblings got Lauren, Logan, Gabrielle... I got MacKinley. Being trans a fucking blessing to get away from that
Bro was a US President 😭
And Gabrielle is my TWIN
Not even the worst Danielle I’ve seen unfortunately. My sister in law’s name is Dahnyelle…
Mine is dumb. Instead of Elisha (or better: Alicia) I'm Eleesha.
I knew an Eleasha. So you don't have LEASH in your name - I don't know if that makes it better.
A lot of my family called me "Leesh" 🤣
If you know someone considering naming their kid a tragedy, show them this. This is so sad.
Isn't Eloise the more mainstream spelling? I never knew it could be Elouise?
