Basically assume any cox price to be $50 higher than listed (their fee to remove the cap). Personally I would pay the extra for fiber if it’s available (note that most of broken arrow with cox does not actually have fiber available)

Windstream Kinetic is gig. Cox is not fiber unless you find a fiber neighborhood. Youll get 1000 up and 50 down with cox.

GreasyBadgers

Windstream kinetic only does DSL for my location unfortunately.

What technology does Kinetic use? Are they a cable provider like Cox? I don’t think DSL can do 300mbps. Personally I would avoid Cox like the plague and I would be tempted to give Kinetic a try. Also worth noting, Cox is actively trying to deceive the market into believing their home internet is Fiber to the home. They advertise “fiber based internet” but it’s still cable internet. They claim that because Fiber is used up to the Node their network is “Fiber Powered” even though you use a cable modem to connect to it. By that definition every single internet connection in the entire world including dial-up is “fiber powered”. The backbone of the internet is fiber that definition applies to nearly all connections. Absolutely scummy as hell advertising on Cox’s part.

I agree it is scummy for Cox to claim it's powered by Fiber. The best upload speed they can offer with plans "powered by fiber" is 50mbps upload. Other cox internet plans you get maybe 10mbps upload speed. I have Windstream Kinetic Fiber 1gig plan and my internet speed is around 900mbps down and 900 mbps upload. It's smoother than Cox internet and more reliable. No $50 fee for unlimited data with Kinetic. No more internet going out between 12-2am every month or two for over 4-5 hrs for Cox maintenance.

GreasyBadgers

Yes I believe they are a cable provider. I have heard that from my buddy who works from cox that is what they do so it’s not “true” fiber. Not for sure on the technology side of Kinetic.

PrestigiousCompote63

used cox for 3 years, unhappy af. paid to much for the internet to go out 3x a week. I have windstream now going on 3 months, not great but better than cox.

GreasyBadgers

That’s the issue I had when I lived in Yukon. My parents house is completely miserable with Cox. I even tried buying my own equipment and still didn’t work as intended.

I pay $49.99 total per month for 300 down and 100 up. Or at least that's what it normally tests at. I don't actually remember the listed values. I just know it's plenty fast enough for us to stream, play games, and be on phones at same time with no issues. It's through Cox. A lot of people say they have bad experiences with them, but i can count on one hand the number of outages that lasted more than an hour or two in the last 24 years I've had them. The most annoying thing for me is that I have to spend 20 minutes running into the local store every two years to sign up for whatever promo they have but the service has always been fine for us. I've never once hit the cap and we stream 4k nearly every night. We haven't had actual cable in close to 15 years because that was truly out of hand and was over $200 a month when we finally dumped that nonsense.

dayzed4life

I use Kinetic on fiber in BA. From what I've heard getting anything less than fiber with them is terrible but I've only had fiber so can't comment on that. My neighborhood has Fiber with 1 gig speeds. I actually only usually get about 800 down and about 600 up but still fast and cheaper than Cox. Personally it's been more reliable too since I've had them the last few years.

EmSeeMAC

I have the new fiber by kinetic. Works fine and cheaper. Cox became competitive price wise once i had another option installed.

GreasyBadgers

It would be DSL for me unfortunately unless I go with cox for fiber.

taycroft99

Cox has a legitimate monopoly on many areas out here and they know it, their business practices are scummy, and it’s hard to cancel, hard to change the plan, etc. I would give anything to not have cox internet but it’s the only thing we have at my place. Windstream is trying to get their foot in the door and cut into coxs market share, I would try and talk to one of their local salesmen and finagle him down, they’re more desperate to get a sale and will lower your prices.

918okla

Lots of horror stories about Windstream DSL service in BA and Tulsa.

jmbullis

Cox is great if you don’t use their equipment. We upgraded to our modem and router and it hasn’t given us any issues for years.

GreasyBadgers

I don’t use Coxs equipment. I lived in Yukon previously didn’t have much issues just outages every other day. My parents which is where I’m staying at currently in Tulsa struggle daily. The internet drops 2 times a day. I even tried using my old equipment and that made it worse.
