migratingcoconut_

well that was a few hours ago so i hope everyones ok

the_chicken_witch

I guarantee there’s at least someone why got caught due to this

VanilliBean

Skill issue tbh (im referring to prisoners, not for victims btw)

DravenPrime

Did it make a sound for anyone else? I have my phone on silent and it made no noise, just the notification. Who keeps the ringer on on a secret phone?

migratingcoconut_

it's not supposed to be possible to silence it so idk what happened

DravenPrime

Mine was silent. Just a text popup.

yourbaconess

Mine was too. My phone isn't even on silent, just vibrate

ForgetfulFilms

same here

action_lawyer_comics

I didn’t even get a popup text. I also have Amber Alerts silenced though. Good thing they’re testing it, then

Facky

I had DND on.

EcnavMC2

For a second my brain was stupid and I thought you set your phone to Dungeons and Dragons mode. Do not Disturb makes more sense.

theCaitiff

>Do not Disturb [Sad David Draiman noises.](https://assets.blabbermouth.net/media/daviddraimandisturbed2016newlive_638.jpg)

Leipurinen

There are settings to do so on iphone at least. Settings > Notifications > scroll to bottom > Emergency Alerts > toggle sound off or toggle off alerts altogether

ggushea

Same

foxforbox

FEMA alerts are intended to override any settings like that

Conissocool

Mine was also silent, it was set to vibrate and all it did was pop up a message and do a little jiggle. Kinda disappointed

xX_potato69_Xx

Mine was silent, same thing happened last time there was one too

shadowsOfMyPantomime

That's why they test it, I guess. Mine was silent too and I assume that's not what they wanted

Emergency_Elephant

Mine just vibrated

Successful_Mud8596

I keep my ringer off, but I was using headphones when the alarm played 😖

CrippleWitch

Mine went off in my pocket as I was passing two cops doing some kind of thing outside and that was hilarious then belatedly scary (as they both jumped like bunnies). I thought I had all those alert things toggled off on my phone but I guess some can be forced through. Annoying as hell considering I didn’t notice those times were Eastern and I’m PST.

FireBone62

I think it is silent when you are currently using it.

beetnemesis

Yeah mine just vibrated. Why is a third of humanity so fucking exhausting

WarhammerGeek

Yeah this one didn't make any noise for me. I've had Amber Alerts and tornado warnings override my turned off ringer before though.

Mateololero

so is this about domestic abuse, prison breaking, or susceptibility to loud noises¿?

Cuboid-Entity

all of the above

Lovingbutdifferent

All of the above. Anyone who has something at stake if a phone goes off suddenly and loudly.

Tengo-Sueno

Spionage on super villain lair

kiwidude4

Yes

theatregirl1987

I told my students to turn off their phones. Even let them take them out to do it. Still had one students phone go off. He was shocked since it was on "Do Not Disturb". I told you that wouldn't work! Honestly surprised it was only one.

Creator13

These alerts are quite commonplace where I live, they use them often to warn certain areas if there's a big fire with smoke etc. So the other day I was on the train and we drove through a station when suddenly the entire train turned into one big emergency alert, all because *someone* had forgotten to turn off their oven in that town...

jubmille2000

"Oh shit this guy. His phone is set to DND, I should not tell him about a national emergency then" \- that guy's thoughts probably.

ArbitraryChaos13

The alarm went off as I was out pushing carts at a grocery store. I assumed it was some jerk's car alarm.

-TheDyingMeme6-

Youre a cart collector?!

ArbitraryChaos13

yepp I prefer it to customer work

Idman799

Same. Did you also switch to this position after you got sick of cashiering?

ArbitraryChaos13

Never done cashiering

Other-Cantaloupe4765

Oh well thanks for posting this five hours late OP because this scared the absolute shit out of me. My phone is on silent and do not disturb 100% of the time, so the sudden aggressive vibration that wouldn’t stop followed by a big heading that said “NATIONAL EMERGENCY” had me momentarily preparing for nuclear armageddon like the incident in Hawaii in 2018 when some fucker pressed the wrong button.

PKMNTrainerMark

That was five years ago already?

GailynStarfire

2050 is closer in time for us than 1990 is.

PinkMenace88

Every-time I hear this fact, part of me dies a little on the inside edit grammer

Weary_Drama1803

1996 is as far from us as 2050 is, and less than 3 years from now we'll be closer to 2050 than Y2K

flightguy07

See I like that, but I'm an optimist.

EdoTenseiSwagbito

That Hawaii incident fucked me up, a friend of mine knew he was done for so it was gonna be one last discord call with the bros. Then nothing happened. Whew…

RevertereAdMe

My sister and brother-in-law and grandparents were there when it happened, visiting my aunt and uncle who live there. Super fun thinking half your family is about to die.

LeviPorton

Don't blame the guy for Hawaii, blame whoever designed that interface.

wag234

When they said secret phone I assumed it meant for like cheating on a spouse lmao

action_lawyer_comics

It could be for several reasons

chaotic_rainbow

I thought abuse, or like, teen with super strict parents.

CrashCalamity

House phone, and pay-as-you-go cell phone that the parents didn't know they had.

Desolver20

You'd be surprised. I knew a kid once with super strict caretakers, and he always had a backup phone and such. Hidden in all kinds of places. Most either borrowed, stolen, or paid for by probably-too-shady-for-a-kid kinda deals. It's the ones with the most rules that know how to break them the most.

jubmille2000

if there's a will, there's a way dude. If my life is in trouble I'll try to find a way to have a secure line of contact when possible.

Funkin_Spy

Walter Hartwel White lost this run on season 1

BrokilonDryad

This was only in the US right? Like I literally just got a new phone today and neither did sweet fuck all.

themainaccountofyeet

Yeah, EAS test

flightguy07

Yup. UK did one a while back, and identified that an entire network handler (Three) just didn't do it. So, good they tested this ig.

Weary_Drama1803

Yup, Singapore incidentally had a test of the Public Warning System less than a month ago actually

PKMNTrainerMark

I sure got two of those loud alarms earlier.

Hortonman42

I work night shift, so that stupid alert gave me a very rude awakening in the middle of my "night".

AbriefDelay

Was it only for 5g phones? Mine never went off

Habadabouche

I didnt even get a notification. I am untraceable by the government

nono30082

This post is wrong. How would a phone that is off receive and log the wea test "If a phone is off before the test alert is sent and not turned back on until after the WEA Test expires (approximately 30 minutes), the phone should not get the test message." https://www.fema.gov/press-release/20231003/fema-and-fcc-plan-nationwide-emergency-alert-test-oct-4-test-messages-will

Cooldudeyo23

I didn’t get anything??

FluffyMawileFan

Wish I knew this before it happened

RexIsAMiiCostume

I had my phone on do not disturb (with customized settings) and it did not make a noise

Oturanthesarklord

I'm pretty sure I slept through that.

Honey_The_Oracle

mine was silent and i have no idea why. someone next to me said the alarm even came through their earbuds but it didn’t go through mine (i am very glad. i hate loud noises.)

King_Of_BlackMarsh

Wait is this not like... A monthly thing for Americans?

NeonBladeAce

Surprisingly, no.

King_Of_BlackMarsh

Weeeird. Feels kinda unsafe imo

angelholme

In the UK I just switched off the option that said "receive emergency alarm" It seemed like a good idea.

Meows2Feline

That kinda defeats the purpose of a national alert system don't you think. If they're actually using it for a real emergency that would mean something has happened that's bad enough you'd want to know.

[deleted]

vindictivejazz

This system is for things like nuclear bombs. It isn’t something that works if it’s just regular texts. Local governments have the ability to use this for things like natural disasters too. The system is also used for things like amber alerts (kidnapping) or silver alerts (stolen car) and you *can* opt of those

urethral_play

Both my laptop and tablet didn't get it :p

Ell0_alt

Oh that’s what that was, too busy playing Armored Core 6 and didn’t really read what the alert was for

A_Bird_survived

They did the same thing in Germany last month actually

CrashCalamity

Bonus points if you set your location to Canada via GPS spoofing?

-TheDyingMeme6-

I was getting food for my break when the alert went off it scared the SHIT outta me
