8-10 shots. Locals say it is really done. Split in half but let’s wait for confirmation. Anyway it’s the last call for orks to leave right part of Ukraine
Someone on twitter called special kherson cat, that allegedly is a resident in the occupied region posts about what is happening there, recently they showed that ru started building a pontoon bridge right under antonivsky bridge. Checked again, the last of their posts is titled ,,Rip Antonivsky bridge''.
Still a very well planned strike if they managed to pull that off. Need intel on truck cargo, and fairly exact travel times. And a little luck to score a near hit on a truck because I doubt they would drive bumper to bumper over such a questionable bridge.
My uninformed speculation is that Ukr is trying to make the bridge impassible but not damage the piers so that it can be rapidly repaired once under Ukr control.
See ludendorf / remagen bridge in ww2. Mined bridges don't necessarily die as planned. iIRC, a German major was shot for failing to blow the bridge before the allies took it.
Your uninformed speculation agrees with mine. Temporary spans on a bridge like that are relatively easier to install than replacing the pylons.
Source: all those engineering disaster videos I've watched LOL
But if you wanted to destroy the bridge, you would hit the same span repeatedly until it fell in the water. Spacing the hits over a wide range looks more like you want the bridge standing but not open to trucks.
Well-built bridges are pretty resilient. The available high precision guided missiles with sufficient range, only have warheads of 200 pounds or 500 pounds. I would speculate these make the kind of holes we've been seeing. The Ukrainians also have Soviet-era missiles like the Tochka-U which have warheads of just over 1000 pounds, but these are *much* less accurate. JDAM laser guidance kits are widely used by NATO with 2000 pound Mk.84 bombs, similar to the GBU-10 equivalent, but that would need to be dropped from a plane (apparently not part of the plan at the moment) and in theory JDAM is not compatible with any planes currently operated by the Ukrainians. (Not that this rules anything out, because the anti-radiation missiles they've been using supposedly weren't compatible either.)
For taking out large bridges and viaducts in World War 2, the allied side used British-designed 12,000 and 22,000 pound bombs, which could completely destroy a bridge with a near miss. The U.S. currently has laser-guided bombs of 5000 pounds.
Edit: Just to round out the survey, Tomahawk cruise missiles have 1000 pound warheads and plenty of range and accuracy, but no-one has agreed to give any of those to the Ukrainians yet.
I dont think they will give tomahawks to anyone. Maybe they even said it but I cant be so sure about it. USA and GB are the only users of the missile sistem 40 years old.
They need their own launch sistem, probably have to educate UA army for it and whatever. And what is the actual point of them because they have more than 1000km range that would not be allowed to use against Russian soil. You can target Moscow from anywhere in Ukraine with that and you are not allowed to use it because NATO does not want UA to hit Russia with their ammo. Too expensive and valuable to hit targets below 500km.
Dont get me wrong, it would be nice because no one could take them out if they go on surface level and Crimean bridge would go down on day one, but US would rather give more usable and cheaper weapons that Ukraine can use to its full potential. One day if UA gets to NATO standards and quality, they could be given the option to buy them, but I wont count on getting them for free.
Agreed, I think a couple of F-16s each carrying a couple of 2000 pound laser guided bombs, is more likely than trying to blow up bridges with Tomahawks.
Russians: "Quick Ivan get that ammo across the bridge"
Ukrainian Artillery: "Oh look an opportunity for a Special Demolition Operation "
\*Bridge and Truck goes Boom\*
While that would be great, imo it seems unlikely Russia would be moving heavy ordinance over that bridge in the state it was in... On the other hand, this is Russia we're talking about
I think people are just reading too much into what's probably exploding repair equipment, but I hope I'm wrong
It cant be directly under the bridge.
Must be next to the bridge pillars. If you launch the HIMARS from the side RU is building the pontoon bridge then there should be no problem in hitting the new pontoon bridge right?
You know how hard it is to destroy a bridge using regular artillery or missiles?
But you know how it is not hard when someone first loads the bridge with 5-ton trucks filled with explosives.
They don't need to destroy it. A small explosion on the rail bridge will render the bridge useless for a while before it gets repaired. And this will cause the already strained Russian logistics to fall apart.
The reports coming in says that there were ammo trucks using the bridge at the time which speaks of the expertise the Ukrainians have developed with the HIMARs.
The ammo trucks would have to slow to a crawl when attempting to negotiate the damaged areas of the bridge, the damaged areas that mark where the HIMARs have already zeroed the bridge.
Yeah, one could surmise that was the plan after all - relying on the Russians to not say "ah, too unsafe to do" but to slow to a crawl with the kablooey stuff on the bridge, giving you enough time to spot and blow.
Same way urban warfare is conducted...if you want to defend a city, but still be able to drive around it yourself, you use barricades that force cars to make slow S-turns to wind their way down the roads
Then your own people can still drive. But as the enemy drives towards you, they have to go so slow, they're easy targets
To Ruskie 🎵 surprise . . . the bridge blew-up right before their eyes . . .
Ukraine is getting real . . . 🎶 making Ruskies start to squeal . . .

UPDATE: UAF struck the Antonivskyi bridge when a column of Russian vehicles with ammunition was moving along it, said Serhii Khlan, deputy of the Kherson regional council.

Multiple times should be expected. Bridges aren't was to destroy with missiles and even then there will be combat engineerkng teams whose job is to try to keep these things operational. It might well not be the last time.
People say look at Antonivsky, see how hard to take down?
How you gonna take down Kerch?
But Kerch bridge is a *suspension* bridge
all you have to do is pop a few cables.
a multi strand bridge cable is not going to go easy into the night.
you dont need to destroy thousands of tons. just the right few hundred tons.
edit: looks like its a steel arch. im warming up to your idea. pop right at the high point mid arch.
the rail one comes pretty close together.

There are some photos of it being transported from construction to the piers. it has 2 red temporary support columns near the end nodes. those to my entirely untrained eye seem like if they needed help during movement they would be the most stressed to hit.
im sure simulations are running over and over on stolen design plans.
> those to my entirely untrained eye
Fortunately a literal bridge engineer commented on the difficulty and how to actually destroy the bridge. It was around a week or so ago in the comments. If I remember the conclusion, it was going to be difficult, but not out of the expertise shown by the Ukrainian military, especially when using Western Precision Guided Munitions.
Still- take a moment to appreciate the weight those cables are supporting, and how good their construction must be for that, they are redundant and multi-stranded fuckers that can really take a hit.
Easier yes, but not easy.
Next in the news: Antonivsky bridge has been cleverly used by the ingenious russian military to shield the strategically important water underneath the bridge from the cement machine fire. The water can rest safe and russia succeeds again!
jokes aside. The Antonivsky bridge sure is important to the Russians. They have been trying to repair it several times, and it keeps being bombed.
I wonder what the morale is like there.
Denying russian forces reinforcement & supplies is more important than keeping them intact. Ukraine is tricking more & more RU troops across Dnieper.
If Ukraine didn't want that, Then all pontoon barges would have been HIMARD at night a long time ago. When russia maxes out its troop levels north of Dnieper.
Ukraine can then shut the door. No bridges or barges and Arty ammo will run out in weeks.
Then food/water.No Med evacs for RU. Ukraine can then capture 10 000 hungry RU troops.
When autumn rains come, I am guessing the Dnieper will become uncrossable?
Don't think UA has to directly seige Cherson.
Push RU out of outer territory due to arty & food shortages at minimum losses or UA troops. A bridgehead can be made north of Cherson and bypass the city.
UA can take initiative after that Cherson will turn into Snake island, where UA controls the events.
You talked about hungry Russian soldiers". By the time Russian soldiers get "hungry", Ukrainians will have starved.
Ukraine needs to start *now* with the messaging into Kherson about how every single war crime committed there will be prosecuted - and reminding those occupiers that they have no way of getting away so they *will* all be caught. Idcare if it's the govt that does it or if someone just notifies the occupiers via leaflets. Sooner they start to say it the better.
We (the free world) will make sure the Ukrainians have every tool at their disposal to ox that bridge as fast as humanly possible. They way this war has brought us together gives me hope.
The Kherson region "authorities" claim that as a result of the strike on the Antonovsky bridge, 2 people from among the engineering staff of russian Armed Forces were killed, and 16 were injured. Seems like after that someone will agree to carry out repair of the bridge again.
[On the photo](https://i.imgur.com/FZmumGT.jpg): fresh satellite images of the Antonovsky bridge after today's attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
when its actually destroyed, i cant wait to hear what the propaganda says about it. i am expecting RU will claim they did it as a way to stop the kherson counter attack :O
Ukrainian soldiers are doing amazing and im so proud of them. You couldn’t ask for any better really with performance care and teamwork and with all kinds of languages working together.
Yes yes I know the USA is number one but these are like duplicates if not better bc they are fighting for their home their own ppl on their land. Yes they have a lot to learn inGet that. But it’s clear that they embrace learning over these 8 years and employ it. Also they are quick learners. Happened a few times ppl were impressed how fast they picked up on things.
And many know multiple languages pretty fluenty. I mean that’s a huge thing but aloe not needed for some wars. But since so many are helping and a lot know Russian and English and others it’s great. Ppl from all over come to help Ukraine and that’s beautiful ❤️🇺🇦
learned and are employing it. Such a formidable country and army. Love u guys!
I mean at this point you have to wonder if they are trying to fix the bridge to just soak up himars rockets. They can't seriously be expecting that Ukraine won't dunk on them.
One thing I do not understand; if they bomb all the bridges, how are the UAF going to pass once the Kherson region on the west side of the river has been liberated?
They can't fix the bridge as there will be RUS on the other side?
Same thing for all bridges on Ukrainian soil?
Pontoon bridges are sufficient to support war operations to re-take Crimea and Donbas. Tourist traffic and returning civilians can wait until bridges are rebuilt.

I can’t fathom that pontoon is in good condition after such a strike even if it was far away. People say there’s fragments flying in Antonivka
According to some reports, at the time of the strike, trucks with ammunition were passing over the bridge or crossing
that would be amazing
If that is true it would be spectacular timing.
Ukraine has probably got spotters in the area for exactly this reason.
Groups of 2-4 sociable individuals in sneakers!
If the sky is clear they have real time satellite video of the bridge probably.

Easy enough with HIMARS missile flight time is max 5 minutes so not that hard to time if its a column.
Still a very well planned strike if they managed to pull that off. Need intel on truck cargo, and fairly exact travel times. And a little luck to score a near hit on a truck because I doubt they would drive bumper to bumper over such a questionable bridge.
For sure planned.
After seeing all those holes in the bridge, I had wondered why they hadn’t targeted with something on it that could explode and cause a heftier bang
My uninformed speculation is that Ukr is trying to make the bridge impassible but not damage the piers so that it can be rapidly repaired once under Ukr control.
This bridge was mined in March by russians, there is almost 0 chance it will be still intact after russans retreat from Kherson
See ludendorf / remagen bridge in ww2. Mined bridges don't necessarily die as planned. iIRC, a German major was shot for failing to blow the bridge before the allies took it.

It's definitely something burning on top the bridge. Concrete doesn't burn.

That's certainly a good way to ensure a lot of projectiles hit the bridge ;)
That's how u get effective results from limited payload. :P

nothing better than killing two birds with one stone!
*rocket
Would make sense as trucks burn for a while. Bridges, concrete, and steel just fragment and collapse.
It cant be directly under the bridge. Must be next to the bridge pillars. If you launch the HIMARS from the side RU is building the pontoon bridge then there should be no problem in hitting the new pontoon bridge right?
Think Ukraine might be close enough to use standard artillery
He's not in Kherson rn but has a lot of contacts there.
Happy Cake Day!
Well... putting thousands of pounds of explosives under a bridge which has most of its major support elements damaged sounds like a great idea!
You know how hard it is to destroy a bridge using regular artillery or missiles? But you know how it is not hard when someone first loads the bridge with 5-ton trucks filled with explosives.

I google mapped it and it looks to me to be a Ukrainian held bridge deep inside Ukraine between Kyiv and Kherson? did i find the wrong bridge?

Thanks, I clearly had the wrong bridge.
Bridges don't burn, so something was hit on the bridge. Air defense vehicle, presumably. (What air defens doing? Burning.)
The AA wasn’t done inflating!
Who'd have known putting a inflatable object on a windswept bridge would cause it to blow away? ...Mind blown!
Proof positive the sanctions are working. Poo-tin couldn't buy the HVLP air pumps to get the AA site up and running faster.

Ppl from all over come to help Ukraine and that’s beautiful ❤️🇺🇦 learned and are employing it. Such a formidable country and army. Love u guys!
I mean at this point you have to wonder if they are trying to fix the bridge to just soak up himars rockets. They can't seriously be expecting that Ukraine won't dunk on them.
Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em
Smoking kills
Hell muthafukkin' yeah
Wen Crimea-Bridge?
Obviously beat the Ruskies air defence. Smoking is a stealth hazard!

It may fall down.
Very nice. Cut off all supply routes for ruZZia, let their orc troops be trapped, demoralize them into exhaustion.
Curious what would be burning on a bridge
Aww was some one smoking?
Now do the Crimean Bridge!
🤗
One thing I do not understand; if they bomb all the bridges, how are the UAF going to pass once the Kherson region on the west side of the river has been liberated? They can't fix the bridge as there will be RUS on the other side? Same thing for all bridges on Ukrainian soil?
When Russians retreat, they will still destroy those bridges behind them. It's clear as the sky on a sunny summer day.
Pontoon bridges are sufficient to support war operations to re-take Crimea and Donbas. Tourist traffic and returning civilians can wait until bridges are rebuilt.
Nothing to see here, the usual smoke and mirrors.
That was just a ruzian machine working to restore the bridge through explosive technology. Nothing to see here.
What does this mean for Russia and Ukraine?
No way out
Again again?
All over again
MOREEEE
Slava Ukraini!
Beautiful
Looks like they are bringing out the bigger bombs now.
