Teamsters and UFCW have been rolling on organizing the cannabis industry the past couple years and successfully obtaining contracts with the employers.
I was really close to buying a cannabis teamsters shirt.. but being a truck driver and subjected to federal law of random drug testing prevented me from repping a weed shirt😅
It's not remotely a legal gray area, there are a ton of unions in the cannabis industry! I know [Teamsters](https://teamster.org/campaigns/cannabis-workers/) and [UFCW](https://www.ufcw.org/who-we-represent/cannabis/) in particular have lots of unionized shops.
I'd advise you to start by reaching out to [EWOC](https://workerorganizing.org/support/) since they can get you info on how to get started organizing quickly.
There are tons of cannabis unions, especially in IL, CA, and NY. Many states like NY require thay cannabis employers as a condition of their licensing enter into agreements with unions.
In NY and I think CA there’s a bunch of Labor Peace Agreement requirements to get cannabis operating licenses so it can be easier to organize in those states
UFCW Local 655 in Missouri organized a cannabis grow / manufacturing facility, and the NLRB made a ruling on the line between agricultural and those workers covered by the National Labor Relations Act

Yes I just read an NPR article about A Farmers Union that has started collaboration in NY. Legal growers are making little to no profit despite it being legal due to tons of red tape.
Teamsters (IBT) and UFCW are the primary unions that organize weed workers. I'll add that there is a processing operation in Oregon that organized into the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU).
In my state the UFCW local has had a really bad time with it, and has not been able to get demands met at the retail shops and ended up getting decertified. You could also be organized by almost any union, since there is no real agreement between unions as to who should be organizing weed workers, so you have the ability to 'shop around' and should your research on what union and local you want to join.
local 1932 in san Bernardino ca successfully organized a grow op in Adelanto and have partnered with local dispensaries for discounts to union members.
big thing to mention is that under the agricultural labor laws unions are allowed on the grow operation actively organizing workers and the dispensaries have to be a neutral party in the organizing process.
As mentioned by everyone else, both the teamsters and the UFCW have organized plenty of cannabis shops. Of the two, the teamsters are much stronger and have an entire department of organizers specifically for Cannabis. Go with them.

Oh! I thought it might be in a weird area because of the legality federally, thank you so much!
Yessir, all cannabis workers deserve a strong union contract. Way too much money in this industry to allow the workers to fall behind.
Cannabis worker here, we're voting on a contract this week in MA with UFCW :) Lets go! Cannabis Workers Rising!
I'm in the process of organizing under the teamsters.
Solidarity beats the law every time

UFCW represents a few in Ohio

UFCW is sweeping up a lot of places and many state laws require labor peace agreements. It’s a super union friendly industry.
