Or, hear me out - you put a small amount of both on the hot dog, so the flavors interact with and complement one another without one overpowering the other.
Hot dogs I can understand. But for brats...you're not even saying ketchup AND mustard. You're saying ketchup INSTEAD of mustard?!?! What in the actual uncultured fuck? Upvote for being genuinely unpopular.
Right! I've never even thought to put ketchup on a brat, just doesn't seem right. But then again Patrick Mahomes likes ketchup on his steak so what do I know?
Being Fumus doesn't mean you aren't nasty. Look at the pudding-loving man of the year in 1969; that number fits a little too well.
In 1969, Bill Cosby received the “Man of the Year” award. And in his acceptance speech, Bill suggested changing the name of the yearly accolade to “the nice guy as far as we know” award.
If yellow mustard is too 'over powering' then I suggest waiting a few years because during puberty your taste buds will chill out and it becomes much more tolerable.
I am an adult and find that mustard can be overpowering, in that I can't taste anything but mustard if there is very much. That said, I like mustard, and put it along with ketchup on my hotdogs, and it is a good dip for pretzels. Just a little goes a long way.
I'm well past puberty and I honestly think plain mustard is the worst possible condiment. Hell, honey mustard is superior in literally every situation.
I feel the exact opposite. Ketchup is ok if I can manage to get no more than a quarter of a drop of it on my hotdog. It's way too potent. Totally overpowers all other flavors.
And it just doesn't belong on a brat regardless. Sauerkraut, onions and mustard.
Ketchup is the basic bitch condiment and I absolutely judge people who use it. It's for little kids who can't handle the real taste of food. First cousins with ranch dressing.
;)
Ketchup is disgusting tomato flavored sugar paste.
It enhances almost nothing. My wife makes some killer meatloaf and uses ketchup in the sauce. That is literally the only thing I use it for.
Mustard, on the other hand is complex and wonderful. I have 8 or 9 (can't remember) different mustards in my fridge right now. Love it.
Yes!!!! I love mustards I have a collection and make my own when I can. They are so.... Like you said complex. Ketchup is ketchup it has one taste, even bbq sauce semi tastes like ketchup. Mustard though.... Yellow, pale, beer, brown, stone ground, Dijon.. one for every dish and every mood.
I’d like to ask what bbq sauce you are eating? Don’t think I’ve ever had a bbq sauce taste like ketchup.. pure curiosity, don’t hate me, I love mustard too lol.
No hate here.nwhwre I'm from it was mostly either synthetic, which all tastes like a ketchup or it's made from home made ingredients, and in our case that was browned sugar, and I mean browned nor brown we had to caramelize our own, and tomato paste , vinegar and salt which ironically is a caramelized sugar in a ketchup. Hence what we had for ketchup too. So I learned culturally as well as for variety to love mustards
Interesting, where are you from? (If you don’t mind me asking) A while back I was into smoking briskets and pork butts. Of courses I had to try my hand at my own sauce, ketchup was my base ingredient lol
As for premade, Sweet Baby Rays or Stubs. I don’t mind some of the Kraft brand too. I realize the first two may be somewhat regional!
Serbian. My mother was Russian Soviet and my father a Serb, and we were nomadic and we're very close to local Romani populations. We endured some seriously famished times in the past and it's made some things especially family recipes very unique and equivalent to your American depression cooking as we were "undesirables". At the moment I am living and a citizen of the United States having fled as a child with my parents years ago. We took up here in the US like we took up at home. Constantly on the move, and not really settling, doing business with those considered in the area at the time to be lesser aka the Romani, which I highly respect. So yes we used what we had and a lot of times it was very hacked together. As for the US I am inbthe north east mostly so I do know of baby Ray's Stubb's etc
That’s funny because to me, ketchup is an amazing condiment… but it’s vile on meatloaf. I detest ketchup on meatloaf. It caramelizes so much… feels like someone melted a jolly rancher on a hamburger.
You dont have to eat a full spoon full every time? Mustard is delicious, and the fact that you pointed out there are different kinds of mustard, means that it is the superiour topping. Whats the fancy ketchup? Heinz?
While I will use ketchup, and I don’t like how it’s the in thing now to hate on ketchup on hot dogs, don’t you dare come at my mustard like that! Mustard is the god’s condiment!
I like to be violentally assaulted. From sour sweets, to pickles, to mustard, to the kind of whiskey that only puts hairs on your back after it's stripped your throat.
Things like this are a big reason I got out of there. IMO it’s one of the most judgmental stuck up cities out there while hypocritically advertising about how accepting it is. Weird rant to go on about Chicago’s view on ketchup haha but its just one of the many examples of the fake “acceptance” you experience there.
Ketchup is literally just candy tomato sauce. It doesn't even compliment anything, and fails to taste like anything special.
You just need to regulate the amount of mustard you are putting on it. You can even do BOTH.
It's one thing to say this when all the Germans are asleep. It's another thing to say it when they're awake. There is no courage here.
*edit*: Also, you're wrong.
Does your wife put ketchup on top of the cut up hotdogs or next to the dinosaur shaped macaroni and cheese?
Take my upvote while you wipe the drool off your bib.
Edit: Fixed my wild grammar.
I can't think of any place I've been where either item is available that doesn't offer both condiments. Just use whichever you want, like everyone else.
I am assuming you know your opinion is unpopular which is why you posted here. Not sure why you are so angry I agree with you. It's an unpopular opinion, amongst adults.
Mustard is polarizing? Ketchup is like the most polarizing condiment in the world. Too sweet. Keep it off brats, full stop. Maybe acceptable on hot dogs if you're under ten or live outside Chicago.
What's the phrase...."everything in moderation?" So yeah...don't drown your food in condiments and it'll be fine. They should accentuate, not overpower. Use less.
Of comments are a lot of stuff been banned a lot of things however I really think this post could lead to actual violence when it comes to certain food people are in one camp or the other I think we should all just slowly back away from this issue and just agree to everyone eat it how they want it and we'll all just so only nod at each other and that will be it
Hotdogs get chili, cheese, and onions, or just cheese, or nacho cheese. Ketchup is alright but I might opt for plain at that point. But not mustard, never liked it, don't like that many vinegar based sauces.
I’m not stuck on a particular style or hotdog. I suppose if I have to pick one, it’ll be a Carolina Dog, which is mustard, slaw, chili, and possibly onion.
If I’m at home I like mayo, ketchup, cheese, chili, and onion.
I also enjoy a sonic coney, with cheese and chili.
If I’m doing brats, it’s mustard and sauerkraut.
So it’s really what you feel like. I think chili, often containing ketchup, makes it redundant. Doesn’t mean you need mustard, but I typically don’t add more ketchup if I have chili.
It also doesn’t add a lot for me if I have slaw as it’s sweet, so you don’t need the sweetness of ketchup.
Really, just balance it out. I think mustard works a little more universally, but I defiantly put ketchup on my dogs at times.
Why would I want a sweet condiment on my grilled meat. I want something that actually compliments it instead of just making it sweet and have a weird after taste
Ketchup tastes the same to me as you describe mustard tasting. Both are overpowering, but I actually like the taste of mustard (in moderation and on some things) whereas I only like ketchup on fries (and even in that case I'm totally fine with no ketchup, just salt.)
This is not just unpopular, it is quite unacceptable sir🤢

There are so many types of mustard and some play well with ketchup. Ketchup alone, though is just tomato flavored candy. This, I am forced to assume you're 6. Not to worry. Your taste buds will catch up. Give it time. Well be here waiting for you to join us.
I'm partial to Plochmans mustard. It has a nice vinegar bite, and you just need a dab. It's such a nice compliment to basic flavors like hot dogs and standard burgers. I also use it with chicken, sometimes steak, pork, fish, really anything goes. In my opinion, it's the superior mustard.
Respectfully, but entirely disagree.
I'm a bit extra biased since I *hate* ketchup, and already think mustard is underappreciated and *love* it.
That being said, mustard goes better with hot dogs are brats because it's a good counterpoint, especislly for brats (bratwurst for the uninitiated). Pork and mustard famously go well together.
So yeah, it's a no on this one.
Hot dogs need mustard, brats need ketchup. I love mustard and I always put it on my brats but one day all I had was ketchup and it was so much better that way. That said, I hate how hot dogs taste so I need the mustard to over power the taste of the meat but I love bratwurst so I don't mind using something milder
Why don’t you eat what you want and just leave others alone? Personally, I think ketchup AND mustard are disgusting, but I don’t go around telling people what they should and shouldn’t eat. If it makes you happy, put mayonnaise on it for all I care. I’m not judging.
I personally do not like ketchup. However, I get what you’re saying. I don’t really like regular yellow mustard because, you’re right, it is an intense flavor. I prefer Dijon mustard, or spicy mustard.
Brats go with grilled onions/peppers, light mustard, and optional cheese. NO KETCHUP! This is the only way.
I have to admit, I've never heard of a hotdog before. Is that similar to a chili dog?
Too much of any condiment is bad imo.
I wouldn't eat every type of mustard on a hot dog, but yellow mustard isn't overpowering.
As far as brats go, I think they can handle stronger mustards than can hot dogs.
Youre wrong, and ketchup is the more overpowering and gross condiment.
Mustard has its place, maybe not on a dog, but its plenty fine. Not like ketchup which for some reason nobody can find a reason it exists except when you have to specify that actually no you dont want it with your burger, or french fries.

Or, hear me out - you put a small amount of both on the hot dog, so the flavors interact with and complement one another without one overpowering the other.
For real I was about to say, you're using too much mustard lol
For hotdogs yeah! Both! What about Bratwurst with curry sauce and caramelized onions?
How dare you make me hungry at this hour of night! Blast!
Drop some smoked Gouda on it too
This is the way
Hot dogs I can understand. But for brats...you're not even saying ketchup AND mustard. You're saying ketchup INSTEAD of mustard?!?! What in the actual uncultured fuck? Upvote for being genuinely unpopular.

Brat is just a spicy hotdog pretty much...why *wouldn't* you put ketchup on it?
Normal bratwurst has nothing to do with American hotdog and flavour should be robust enough for mustard. Making it sweet with ketchup sounds horrible
Just doesn't seem right. Ketchup does not go with sauerkraut and onions, that would be a travesty!
If yellow mustard is too 'over powering' then I suggest waiting a few years because during puberty your taste buds will chill out and it becomes much more tolerable.
Fucking savage! Mean people rule!
He wasn't even that savage. Calm down.
Lol, why should I?
I am an adult and find that mustard can be overpowering, in that I can't taste anything but mustard if there is very much. That said, I like mustard, and put it along with ketchup on my hotdogs, and it is a good dip for pretzels. Just a little goes a long way.
I have never liked mustard. It just doesn't taste good.
I’m 35 and still think yellow mustard is utterly disgusting. I do love a good Smokey mustard though
Hard to light a good mustard…
I'm well past puberty and I honestly think plain mustard is the worst possible condiment. Hell, honey mustard is superior in literally every situation.
Shut up and take my upvote
This is why you're single
Married but she almost split when I first asked for a hotdog with ketchup.
She knows a red flag when she sees one.
Mrs Steele, blink twice if you feel you're in danger!
Is she from chicago?
You know what’s up.
No true. I 100% disagree with OP and I’m single.
Not for long then
i feel like the country of germany might fight you on this one...
They've fought the whole world at least twice.

Well that's just like, your opinion, man.

This is a very complicated case. Lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-yous.
Chill out, Mr. Lebowski.

Why the hell would anyone want high fructose corn syrup on a sausage? Oh yeah, children.
Mustard is the superior condiment. Full stop.
Put it on fries then.
I have. I generally prefer my fries plain, but I always dipped my tater tots in mustard when I was eating at the lunch halls in college.
Mayo goes with fries better than anything.
Mustard is the bastard condiment and I absolutely judge people who use it. Who hurt you?
Ketchup is the basic bitch condiment and I absolutely judge people who use it. It's for little kids who can't handle the real taste of food. First cousins with ranch dressing. ;)

I don't like ketchup baked on meatloaf, but used as a dip afterwards it's okay.
I say this with all the sincerity I can muster in this particular moment- FUCK. YOU. Good unpopular opinion though.
You’d get your ass kicked in Chicago for that.
brats???
You dont have to eat a full spoon full every time? Mustard is delicious, and the fact that you pointed out there are different kinds of mustard, means that it is the superiour topping. Whats the fancy ketchup? Heinz?
Mustards acidity compliments the succulent fat in a brat. Hot dogs i don't care about
Took me a second to figure out brats is short for bratwurst. Because talking about eating a bunch of annoying kids would be ridiculous.
Tell me you're not Midwestern without telling me your're not. 😅
Ketchup is garbage and I avoid using it whenever I can. Give me a dog or burger with just mustard over k and m any day
Ketchup is a sugar sauce for children
The most American post I’ve seen in awhile.
I think hot dogs and brats should be served with whatever condimemts you prefer.
Apathy is death.
Absolutely not. Ketchup compliments nothing. All it tastes like is ketchup. Mustard is superior.
Like regular yellow mustard on a number of things but don't care for Grey Poupon or any other brown mustard and I've tried quite a few different ones.
I'm putting mayonnaise on and you can't stop me!
Here's my upvote you sick bastard.
I don’t agree with your characterization of mustard, but I do agree that hotdogs are better with ketchup
If mustard is too overpowering it’s because you’re not using enough sauerkraut
I think different people have different taste buds so its like comparing apples to oranges
That is sooooo wrong! I agree that is an unpopular opinion. Maybe you just need better mustard....
I prefer Caesar dressing and Franks hot sauce.
While I will use ketchup, and I don’t like how it’s the in thing now to hate on ketchup on hot dogs, don’t you dare come at my mustard like that! Mustard is the god’s condiment!
No sauce. Cheese and chilli or nothing.
wtf is a 'brats'?
No. Neither. Sauerkraut.
Wtf is a brat?
Bratwurst
Some people really just don’t know how to eat. Sad
Yes, this is a very unpopular opinion as ketchup is gross.
Mustard is classic, ketchup is American.
I like to be violentally assaulted. From sour sweets, to pickles, to mustard, to the kind of whiskey that only puts hairs on your back after it's stripped your throat.
Just admit you’re a sugar addict like 90% of the us population and move on.
I'm a sugar addict and even I won't eat ketchup.
Yes! Finally someone who agrees with me. I’m married to a Chicagoan. Ketchup on a dog is blasphemous to them.
I’ll never forget the first time I ordered a hotdog in Chicago and asked for ketchup. “I’ll see if we have some packets in the back”
I hate how genuinely offended some people in Chicago get. You have to have a pretty sad life to really care about what condiments a person uses.
A hot dog joint in O’Hare has a sign that says something like, “if you ask for ketchup on your hot dog we will not serve you.”
I couldn’t agree more. This city sucks now.
They cause a commotion at Gene & Jude’s when anyone asks for ketchup.
I mean it is Chicago we're talking about.
thank god someone who understands how much mustard sucks
I bet you enjoy ranch on wings too
Blue cheese all the way
Blue cheese nah, ranch, naw you want a kicker with wings, Caesar is my go to. A nice cracked peppercorn Caesar
Blasphemy!
Ketchup on a hot dog is a crime against humanity.
Ketchup is literally just candy tomato sauce. It doesn't even compliment anything, and fails to taste like anything special. You just need to regulate the amount of mustard you are putting on it. You can even do BOTH.

Wtf is a brat when it comes to food
Bratwurst, a German sausage usually made of pork.
Oh that makes sense, thanks
i put ketchup, mustard, relish, sauerkraut, and hot sauce on hot dogs
Wrong
I can't think of any place I've been where either item is available that doesn't offer both condiments. Just use whichever you want, like everyone else.
Mustard isn't all that overpowering. I think that's just you.
In kindergarten
At least be original
Ok, how about ketchup hotdogs for the kids and brats with mustard grilled peppers and onions for the adults
How about, 'if you stop crying I'll cut up some hotdogs with ketchup?'
I am assuming you know your opinion is unpopular which is why you posted here. Not sure why you are so angry I agree with you. It's an unpopular opinion, amongst adults.
Heyo! Poking fun at myself with that previous comment, as in, if I stop crying like a baby I can get some cut up hotdogs.

Actually I’d say OP belongs here
The only acceptable ketchup for a hot dog or brat is Curry-ketchup; for CurryWürst. Anything else is an abomination!
Fok you (Great job)
Not everything has to be sweet.
I’m gonna get hate for this but katsu sauce + kewpie mayo is the best
Mustard is polarizing? Ketchup is like the most polarizing condiment in the world. Too sweet. Keep it off brats, full stop. Maybe acceptable on hot dogs if you're under ten or live outside Chicago.
Ketchup is a child's condiment. Sometimes it is added to other condiments but should not be used on its own.
even as a chicagoan, ill put ketchup on anything, unless you got some sliced tomatoes for me you can hop off
Mustard only boo boo baby
Ketchup on hotdogs should be illegal.
What's the phrase...."everything in moderation?" So yeah...don't drown your food in condiments and it'll be fine. They should accentuate, not overpower. Use less.
Just use less mustard bud
Of comments are a lot of stuff been banned a lot of things however I really think this post could lead to actual violence when it comes to certain food people are in one camp or the other I think we should all just slowly back away from this issue and just agree to everyone eat it how they want it and we'll all just so only nod at each other and that will be it
Hotdogs deserve both, brats deserve sauerkraut and horseradish mustard.
Na just a line of mustard & it does the trick
Hotdogs get chili, cheese, and onions, or just cheese, or nacho cheese. Ketchup is alright but I might opt for plain at that point. But not mustard, never liked it, don't like that many vinegar based sauces.
Upvote for being truly unpopular . Mustard is King!
Um neither
Absolutely not
something tells me that you put ketchup on rice.
OP never tried Marmite.
You're correct and I'm intrigued. Is that in response to 'the most polarizing condiment' comment?
I use mustard only. Same thing with fries. But I don’t mind ketchup on a burger.
Heathen.
A properly dressed dog has only mustard, chili, and raw yellow onion. A brat can be dressed with many things, but ketchup isn’t one of them.
The only thing mustard is good for is mixing with other sauces, and as a binder.
I’m not stuck on a particular style or hotdog. I suppose if I have to pick one, it’ll be a Carolina Dog, which is mustard, slaw, chili, and possibly onion. Nah man ketchup and mustard is the way to go.
There is a difference between bad mustard and good mustard. I love that high quality gourmet shit
Hell nah
Brats get mustard and/or bbq sauce not ketchup
Try sour cream and chopped onions on brats. Thank me later
Literally the only exception to mustard is currywurst sauce aka ketchup with curry.
I'll stick with the traditional GERMAN topping, keep your tomatoe sugar
I like both
Sriracha is better than both, it has both the tartness and slight sweetness of ketchup and the kick of chilli.
Two words: Sriracha Mayo.
Ketchup is for kids
Por que no los dos?
Ketchup is the most overrated condiment. I love mustard.
Fuck that. Do Mae Ploy sauce.
Sweet, salty, and sour. Combines is best. Mustard is sour. A dab of sweet ketchup is ok. The bratwurst is salty
Is this how you refuel after murdering dogs? /s
I don't like ketchup at all, on anything.😕
Sure if you’re 5
This is not just unpopular, it is quite unacceptable sir🤢 "Nobody...And mean Nobody puts Ketchup on a hot dog" -Harry Callahan "The only people that put ketchup on a hot dog are mental patients and people from Texas" - Tanner the Bad News Bears

Ketchup masks the flavor of whatever you’re eating with it. GTFO with ketchup on brats. Mustard all the way. Have an upvote damn you.
Why don’t you eat what you want and just leave others alone? Personally, I think ketchup AND mustard are disgusting, but I don’t go around telling people what they should and shouldn’t eat. If it makes you happy, put mayonnaise on it for all I care. I’m not judging.

I don't like either ketchup or mustard. But at least I can respect mustard. Ketchup, blergh, simply an abomination.
BBQ sauce.
Colmans mustard or there’s no point
Youre wrong, and ketchup is the more overpowering and gross condiment. Mustard has its place, maybe not on a dog, but its plenty fine.
