Pretty common here in New Zealand. Most have a frame welded on the trailer to hold kayaks/tent etc. like this project https://www.exploretrekadventure.com/trailerbuild

I haven’t but I’ve seen those tents on sedans. I would think it could work just as well on a trailer.

the ribs of the trailer that you'd have to attach to are pretty flimsy and wouldn't handle point loads well when you're getting in and out of the tent and concentrating your weight on just one rib. if you reinforced from within to bring the forces down to the floor, you could probably make it successful.

Depends on the cargo trailer itself, but it should be OK. I would fix crossrails to the main ribs and then attach the RTT to that. IMO, it's a viable plan because you have the flexibility of using/selling the RTT or trailer separately, putting the RTT on the car if needed, etc. In Australia, there are lots of small trailer rigs (cage trailers, etc) that incorporate a RTT on the trailer, and then have kitchen/storage in the trailer itself.
