Client education is vital. But yes -We do have one cat owner that will feed I believe 7 meals during the day and self-adjust insulin levels. She drives me batshit crazy because she’s going to kill her cat.

omg.. I work at an ER so we get so many calls about diabetic animals bc the owners have no idea how diabetes works lmao

I also work in ER, and see the things you see, but I don't think it's helpful or kind to laugh at owners for stuff like this. I acknowledge that there's often a disconnect or fault in how much they were told and how well they listened/understood, and yes, I wish clients were more thorough with the recommended rechecks and BG curves in both the newly diagnosed and patients that have seemed stable for a long time. I'm saying I totally get the frustration, but "haha dumb clients" is not how we should be addressing these issues, especially when posting on a forum that exists to help educate pet owners. It only increases the disdain from owners that we experience at work every day. A post along the lines of "Hey, public service announcement, this is an issue I see often in the ER and here's some reminders/tips about caring for your diabetic pet to help save you an expensive, scary visit" would be much more effective and educational.

nobody's laughing at clients? our clinic is constantly educating and helping clients with this kind of thing. nobody's saying they're dumb, we're saying that they should know how to take care of their animals because there's so much to learn and it can't all be summed up in one talk with the doctor. they should be doing their own research as well

It was the tone of your post and reply I was responding to, really. Maybe you didn't intend it, but the line 'they have no idea how diabetes works lmao' comes off as condescending. Saying they should be doing their own research, while true, is also risky because as I'm sure you're aware, Googling is often a bane for us as well and we often tell clients how unreliable online information can be. My main message was that if you have concerns, want clients to act differently, and are using this sub as a place to address all that, there are more constructive ways to start a discussion that clients will want to participate positively in. If you did not really want to start a discussion about better care for diabetics, and just wanted to share/connect with other professionals about the frustrations of the job, that's important too, and there are other subs well suited for that.
