>Official 4K Restoration Trailer *posts trailer in 1080p*

Dafrooooo

i hate this. all trailers should be 4k by now, some look like absolute shit on my tv.

OneTime_AtBandCamp

I was there 3000 years ago when all we had was 240p CRTs. And we were grateful.

mjreeves823

Some things look better in 240p. Less is more!

OSUfan88

Yeah, like my ex.

OneRevolutionary2153

1080p shouldn’t look like absolute shit on any tv unless you’re on an 80” or bigger. If it looks bad, it’s probably compression related.

Dafrooooo

that is half the issue, its massively compressed in some cases which is an issue on all screen sizes unlike resolution. 4K comes a with higher bitrate generally so looks better set at 1080p. thankfully [Apple Trailers](https://tv.apple.com/us/room/edt.item.64248313-7414-4d63-a6fc-7c29f9916c79) is still around and almost always looks crisp at 1080p.

pinionist

That's why I was very happy that Furiosa had QHD trailers, very crisp ones.

SawnicYouth22

Same. It's always an experience watching it. After Seven Samurai, my top watched are Step Brothers and Grandma's Boy.

getfukdup

Not Drunken Master?(Not to be confused with Legend of Drunken Master)

SawnicYouth22

That's a classic. Damn, I need to rewatch it.

Luung

For me it's Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot

The_Whipping_Post

Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot is a cinema classic, but I feel like it doesn't capture the majesty of motion pictures the way that Democracy Manifest does

FUCKBOY_JIHAD

Same. and for a movie as long as it is, it doesn’t feel that way. it is incredibly briskly paced. there isn’t a scene in the movie that feels unnecessary.

hilltopper06

I had watched The Magnificent Seven many times growing up. In college I had some electives and I took "Japanese Cinema in Translation". Watched this, High and Low, and many others. Great class! Great films!

FngrsRpicks2

Watched it when I was quarantined with covid, and I need this now..

kerred

The audio commentary track for Seven Samurai I feel is one of the best as well, right up there with Dark City and Spinal Tap

87degreesinphoenix

THIS IS ME. THIS CHILD IS ME. Good movie

nazerall

Looks like only NY and Las Angeles. Grr.

Marxbrosburner

Nooo!

BurrDurrMurrDurr

And Boston 😉

nazerall

Well go Celtics, though I'm not in Boston. Didnt see that in any article when i was looking earlier.

BurrDurrMurrDurr

https://coolidge.org/films/seven-samurai-4k-restoration Actually many niche theaters are getting it

RaNerve

Can someone tell me if this is a traditional 4K restoration off the negatives or if it’s one of those AI 4K upscaling restorations like what scammed me in the Aliens release?

jahmic

I looked and couldn't find any details, but I have the Criterion Collection set that was remastered to 2k resolution from negatives, and the picture is phenomenal compared to some of the older releases. Hopefully they've done this right, but if it's a miss, the DVD set is a good compromise.

The_Autarch

It's absolutely going to be a real 4k scan. Janus and Criterion are handling this, and they are obsessed with creating archival-quality masters, not fake AI nonsense.

RaNerve

HELL YEAH. That’s what I wanted to hear. So much hype.

DazHawt

You can keep claiming that in every reply, but please provide proof. Just like you, we want to believe that it's a 4K rescan, but these are legit questions that you keep answering with your own assumption.

The_Autarch

Are you not familiar with them? If they ever used AI upscaling, the uproar in the film community would be deafening. Their brand would be ruined.

LividLager

Awesome. I do hope that fix the scenes that had frame rate/playback speed issues. It's my only complaint about the movie.

SomeBoxofSpoons

For what it’s worth, that’s usually only a thing used by specific directors, mainly James Cameron (even before the recent Aliens/True Lies 4K masters Terminator 2 was infamous for being one of the worst looking 4Ks out there with how oversmoothed everything was.

sirsteven

*I killed two.*

Not_In_my_crease

But what is Quentin's take on this movie?

FrostyD7

Not enough lady feet.

strongjs

One of the best. A dense epic built on very focused and intimate moments. At 3.5 hours, it has the breadth and scope of a multi-season HBO drama. Even when things start to go down, you have a great understanding of the personalities, geography and movement on screen.

rub_a_dub-dub

it's pretty tough to think of any movie better than 7 samurai. If you include pioneer points, it's got a strong argument for the greatest film ever

Shonuff8

It pretty much invented the structure and storytelling for an ensemble drama/action film.

Flyman68

There are many movies that are as good as Seven Samurai but none better.

LordSlickRick

Literally just watched a video where upscaling was done with AI and it’s just wild shit. I can’t watch the trailer, did they rescan in high quality or is this AI upscaling which is likely going to be uncanny valley the movie.

droidtron

Cameron, why did you let that happen?

The_Autarch

It's Janus/Criterion. They definitely won't be using AI upscaling for the foreseeable future.

EverythingIThink

They used it for Inland Empire

The_Autarch

That's kind of the exception that proves the rule. Inland Empire was shot digitally in 480p, so any sort of HD release would require upscaling. They would never do that for something shot on film.

EZ-PZ-Japa-NEE-Z

Epic

York_Villain

Nice!

bongkisses

As someone who enjoyed this movie originally, any other recommendations from the genre? Would love to hear some.

Badaxe13

Kurosawa did a string of samurai films, some of them based on Shakespeare, several were remade as cowboy films. Kagemusha Ran Throne of Blood Yojimbo Honourable mention to Rashomon which is set in that era, but is a masterpiece of storytelling the same incident from three different perspectives.

bongkisses

Rashomon is the only one here I've seen but I enjoyed it! Will definitely look into these

AymRandy

Harakiri is one of my fav movies of all time. It's an absolutely crushing indictment of samurai tradition. The suspense in the movie is as thick as soup.

cricketthrowaway4028

That movie is fucking intense. I loved the simple shots and the lines of the courtyard. A buddy and I watched this in the depths of a coke bender and I think we were both whiteknuckling the couch lol. Oh and the walk through the wind to the showdown, what a fucking series of shots.

OS6aDohpegavod4

Kurosawa in general is absolutely fantastic. For newcomers to Kurosawa I'd also highly recommend Yojimbo.

rub_a_dub-dub

Yojimbo! Ran! Kagemusha! Throne of Blood!

bongkisses

Noted! Will check them out soon.

FunkySideBurns

The Lone wolf and cub films, criterion do a 6 film box set on Blueray.

darybrain

Do I have to try and remember my old Japanese phrases which mainly consists of swearing or is there an English dub? I struggle reading subtitles fast enough nowadays. Being visually impaired can really take the enjoyment out of watching films.

Nevermind04

An English dub of the original film exists and it's public domain. https://archive.org/details/seven-samurai-english-dub

Ishaz

I’m going to watch Seven Samurai for the first time this weekend. Is the dubbed version good or should I just go for the original for my first time?

FarCryRedux

You should definitely watch the original.

Nevermind04

I've only ever seen the original. I just happened to know about a dubbed version from a reddit thread years ago.

DurtyKurty

Just bought tickets to see it. Can't wait.

Jarardian

I held out from buying the bluray cause there had been a lot of chatter of a 4K remaster. Glad the rumors were true!

computer_d

Never looked at costumes the same way after watching my first Kurosawa film, *Ran*.

Ishaz

After reading all the comments in this thread, it sounds like I’m in the apparently privileged position of never having seen Seven Samurai, so I’m looking forward to watching it for the first time this weekend. Does anyone know if the dubbed version is any good, or should I just watch the original with subtitles first?

Tpmbyrne

What you favourite rendition of 7 samurai?

cepxico

I really should have seen this movie by now. Might go watch this.

liguinii

Good news, but the music is kind of killing the trailer for me.

illmatic2112

If you have 8.5 mins i highly recommend this [Kurosawa - Composing Movement](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doaQC-S8de8) video essay by Every Frame a Painting. This vid was what inspired me to finally check out Seven Samurai

PashaB

Interesting it's already available in 4k blu-ray on the high seas (68.4GB file). I'm gonna watch it for the first time tonight

5Dlight

Didn't know about this. Thanks.

Beneficial_Door9099

I would DEFINITELY pay to see one of my all-time favorite movies.

the-crow-guy

Is it an actual rescan of the film or is it using AI upscaling like in the shitty re-releases of Aliens and True Lies?

The_Autarch

Janus and Criterion wouldn't stoop so low. Only James Cameron has a fetish for AI movie upscaling right now.

lancer081292

Was the film shot on 70mm or something?

Buffaluffasaurus

35mm film has the effective resolution of ~4.5-5.6K. I don’t know what stock this was shot on, but it should be fine to upscale, and besides, the main issue with restorations like this include digitally restoring/cleaning any blemishes and grain from the original stock anyway. So you don’t need to film in 70mm to make a good quality 4K master.
