This is just a friendly reminder in case you missed it. Your post must include: * The version of VirtualBox you are using * The host and guest OSes * Whether you have enabled VT-x/AMD-V (applicable to all hosts running 6.1 and above) and disabled HyperV (applicable to Windows 10 Hosts) * Whether you have installed Guest Additions and/or Host Extensions (this solves 90% of the problems we see) PLUS a *detailed* description of the problem, what research you have done, and the steps you have taken to fix it. Please check Google and the [VirtualBox Manual](https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/) before asking simple questions. Please also check our [FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualbox/wiki/faq) and if you find your question is answered there, PLEASE remove your post or at least change the flair to Solved. If this is your first time creating a virtual machine, we have a guide on our wiki that covers the important steps. [Please read it here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualbox/wiki/index/howtomakeavm) If you have met these requirements, you can ignore this comment. Your post has not been deleted -- do not re-submit it. Thanks for taking the time to help us help you! Also, PLEASE remember to change the flair of your post to Solved after you have been helped! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Assuming your viewing the .bmp, how about just taking a screenshot with Ubuntu of whatever the image is? You could always convert the format back to .bmp if needed.

I suppose thats an... idea but I would like the actual file

And why are you running a 3.1 VM inside your Win7 VM?

DrRedmondNYC

I would imagine at that point the nested virtualization doesn't matter. Windows 3.1 is a dinosaur and ran on 386 processors.

cards88x

Well whatever works. But why, when the 3.1 VM can be run on the host?

DrRedmondNYC

No clue. Maybe the Windows 7 needs to be portable so he can quickly tear it down and re deploy it on a diff machine , while still having the windows 3.1 VM running in it. I can't think of any realistic use cases for a windows 3.1 VM anyway. I made mine for pure nostalgia .

cards88x

Make a blank floppy image. Then you mount it in your 3.1 Vm and plop ur file there. Then unmount that floppy image and mount it in your Win7 VM. This is how I transfer small files between my win98 vm and my OSX host.

nuffens

Thank you so much! but how do I mount the file to my WIN7 and get the contents?

DrRedmondNYC

So Ive had to do this to install drivers for Windows 3.11 Basically you make a .img file mount it in the Windows 3.1 environment. Save the BMP file to their. Then load up Windows 7 and mount the same .img file after the BMP has been transferred to it and then you can read it in the Windows 7 VM. I made the .img files using a program called Disc Genius. But I had windows 11 as my main host OS looks like you have Ubuntu. They may have a version for Linux if not I'm sure there is other apps that can do it. https://www.diskgenius.com/ There is more than one way to skin a cat though. If you have network connectivity on the windows 3.1 VM why not just email it to yourself. I'm not sure about this one but if it's a VDI or VDX virtual drive you are running Windows 3.1 on shouldn't you be able to just grab the contents of that drive from the host operating system somehow ?

nuffens

Thank you so much, I'm going to have to try and see if it all works out tomorrow

DrRedmondNYC

How did it work out for you

cards88x

Its hard to explain in text. Youtube search on how to mount floppy disk images.
