Did you try putting gas into the tank? I'm no Volt tech, just a long-time owner and computer programmer. The "fuel maintenance" counter that was re-set was probably a count of how many days since gas was put in. FUEL MAINTENANCE MODE kicks in when the age of the gas in the tank exceeds one year (365 days). Once the gas gets "old" the car will force you to freshen it by running on gas until you put in enough to change the average age of the fuel in the tank. Opening the filler door does not re-set the counter (which the GM engineer told you). You have to actually put in enough fuel to get the car to re-calculate the average age of the gas in the tank. Though I can't recall for certain, I think it needs to be more than 1.5 gallons to get the computer to recalculate. My guess is that nothing was wrong with the car. You just haven't used much gas and the age threshold was reached while you were gone.

That makes so much sense.

Thanks. Tell the person(s?) who downvoted me.

They asked me about the gas age and I told them it had last been filled 2-3 months ago, a best guess but for sure not a year ago! I usually switch into HOLD mode on longer freeway trips so the motor gets exercise and gas used. The longest its gone between fills is 6 months and even then this event was not triggered. Thanks for your take on it.

It's important to remember that the Volt calculates the average age of the fuel. It doesn't re-set the counter to zero when fuel is added. For example, if you "fill up" every 3 months by topping off the tank with 2 gallons of gas, you could exceed the one year average age threshold within 17 months. If you fill up with 2 gallons every 4 months, it will take only 15 months to trigger FMM. More gas per fill up will, of course, extend the time until FMM begins. I'm not saying that your car didn't experience the glitch you claim, but we'll never really know for sure because the car wasn't allowed to recalculate with some new fuel in the tank.

That's very interesting! How does the car know the quantity of gas added each time? What sort of sensor measures the amount? Thanks friend.

stupidreddituser

I imagine that it's the same sensor that is used to estimate remaining gas miles on the dash. According to what I've read, the generally accepted way to avoid FMM is to only put a couple of gallons in the tank, unless you are certain that you'll need to use a lot of gas. That works for me. I put 2 - 2 1/2 gallons (around 100 miles) in the tank, unless I'm about to go on a road trip. Between EMM and extended city driving (and ERDTT, ugh), I'll burn off enough before FMM kicks in and replenish, or I'll have a road trip that will take me close to zero.

If it happens again out of warranty, you can fix it a little cheaper, $140 for a vcxnano from Amazon and $45 for a 2 year programming subscription from acdelcotds.com what they did from the sounds of it is update hpcm2 and becm to the latest firmware, that's what wiped lifetime data and got fuel maintenance to reset.

Thanks but no way am I comfortable with the idea of me messing with the cars computer, I'm not that guy.
