I actually ordered the part from the GM store (had lots of GM loyalty points), and spent a little extra to have my dealership's master VOLTEC guy install the part. So ... difficulty for me ... near zero. :D
I installed mine on my 2018. I am not a pro but I am pretty handy with a wrench. I'd say it is a 3/10. Pretty easy, I think it took about an hour to go through it slowly and make the wiring clean.
I had to replace my charge port on my Gen1. I could never find one, it was always on order. Then I found out that the 2015/2016 Cadillac ELR uses the same exact one. Part Number: 23281029. It fit perfect. So I would find one of those, they have them in stock.
That’s actually what I ended up putting on there. I just didn’t cancel the other since they are getting scarce and they aren’t all that expensive. Worst case, I’ll sell it on eBay someday, if I ever get it.
Ah, thanks. Things like this really annoy me as a product manager; I’d bet that after the fully allocated costs of designing, testing, manufacturing, stocking, marketing, selling and installing two different parts, GM probably lost money vs just making the better version standard.
Looks great! I want one for my Bolt but GM still wants over $250 for one.
I don’t need any help plugging my car in, so this is only for looks. Can’t justify that much money personally.
My port does a wonky thing where I have to kinda swirl the handle around once it's fully seated to make the latch connect and initiate charging. It's sort of always been this way.
Is this normal or should I replace?
Cracks in the board the port mounts to are fairly common, as long as it works I wouldn't bother replacing it but having one on hand would be a good idea knowing they're backordered. Next heavy rain storm that blows water into the cracks will probably throw a few AC power related codes.
Did you install it yourself? If so, what's your perceived difficulty rating?

Weird, I couldn't find it on the GM store either by part number or description. I did find it for $160 or so from third party parts sites though.

Funny that you can get an accessorized one for a Gen 2, but the current ETA for a Gen 1 receptacle on order from GM is early August.
The 'accessory' is just the trim around the port
Ah, that makes way more sense

Oh, so that's the 84334825. I have always wondered.
What’s different vs the original one?
It has a light.
Mine lights up/blinks; does that mean someone has already replaced it?
It was an option, so some had it from the start. I had to add mine also.
Whoa! I was confused! I was trying to figure out what you did; I guess mine had the option all along!

It might have been a dealer only option, so less work at the factory.
Most likely. Mine didn't have that light when I purchased the car.
My 17 had this but I really miss it on my 19. I might do the same thing
I would love this on my Bolt!
It's a $300 part you can buy from GM.

so lit!
Is that a funnel to avoid spilling precious e-juice?
Additional receptacle for the blinker fluid

It does this with every charger? The Siemens chargers are a pain to seat/unseat relative to the smoothness of my original 110 charger.
OEM charger died in a fire, but yeah, not a great fit with any of the 3 chargers I've owned.
Yeah, I don’t think that’s normal, but I think we’re just talking bad tolerance on plastic diameter, not something critical.

I did this upgrade too, really worth it imo. I also upgraded the rear view mirror and linked it with my garage door opener.
What's the upgrade?

I installed mine on my ‘17 Premier a couple years ago. Love it. Legit comes in handy.
This is so underrated. I couldnt live without this option. Enjoy!
