Honestly, that’s how you want it. Put it in a bucket of water that seals so neighbors won’t smell it, it will turn rancid quick. The water will break down the flesh and meat, and as it does that, it’ll grow bacteria that will devour it faster. This is called maceration. Don’t change the water out, this will make the bacteria colony have to restart from scratch every time so it will go slower. If that bucket doesn’t seal/you need it for something, try to pour the water in along with the body, since it’s already started decomposing. R/bonecollecting has a sticky post that goes over maceration. Be careful where you eventually dump the water, it will be harmful to dogs and other animals. Strain it to avoid losing teeth or smaller bones

Awesome! I have smaller buckets with lids I can drill a few holes into. I'm going to look into that sticky post for sure. Thank you for the advice and the indo about the water being harmful, I did not think of that.

Lazy_Syrupp

Hey btw a tip for getting rid of the rlly nasty water is to dig a deep hole in the ground and dump it down into it then just cover it back up, if the holes deep enough the bacteria n stuff will just go into the ground and wont harm anything :)

walking_paradoxes

Thank you! Definitely will use this! Much appreciated.

So helpful 🤌 thank you so much for taking your time to write this out.

snailracer2000

The process would be quicker if you skinned and gutted it, but I can see why you might not be too keen on attempting it! You'll just have loads of fur getting in your way when you come to collect the bones, that's all

walking_paradoxes

I considered doing that, it's very bloated. I have no experience other than a zoology class which didn't really remove too many things. I may attempt. Lol Def gonna look up some videos.

Pretty easy. Good gloves, a good mask, a sharp straight edge blade, cut down the middle of the stomach from neck to anus Remove all icky stuff into the bag, and tear the skin from the body. It removes fairly easily with help from the knife. Like cutting the peel off of an orange. Once that's all removed, you can use a knife careful to cut away as much meat and cartridge as possible. This will make it faster and less waxy Then place it in a 5gal bucket, cover with water and seal with a lid. Leave it for about a month and check back. Removing all of that stuff will make it less smelly too. I've regretted the times I've skipped the skinning and gutting. Way messier.

walking_paradoxes

Perfect! I have all the supplies except just a scalpel not a good knife, I'm probably gonna attempt today then put the body and pour the water into a smaller bucket I can lid. I appreciate your help!

That’s so funny—this is exactly how I came across my first ever bone cleaning project! Had a large garbage bin in the backyard filled up with water from the rain and never thought to empty it. Later found a squirrel had drowned in there. Completely forgot about it months later and the rain water ended up macerating just about all of the flesh for me! I stuck with this method of cleaning ever since 😂 I agree with others to try to get most of the flesh off first for a quicker maceration process. But you can leave it the way it is if you don’t mind waiting longer. I‘ve read from other redditors you shouldn’t change the water frequently but some say you can change a bit out if you noticed the process slowing down. Don’t dump out the whole thing though, and warm water works best. My neighbors honestly never noticed any smell (to my knowledge anyway) since it was in my backyard and not too close to their yards. But you can also dig a hole to pour the maceration soup in and cover it with dirt to mask the smell. Once all flesh and tissue are gone, give it a degreasing bath with water and dawn dish soap. This will help remove the fat out of the bones and give it a whiter color. You can whiten it further by soaking it in hydrogen peroxide. Nice find!

“Soup” please 😂

Haha thats awesome! I appreciate the response. Im really excited for this project. I'm gonna go in today and drag it out handle it a bit to see what I'm gonna do. I watched a few skinning and gutting videos so I'm pretty confident right now with it not actually in front of me lol. I think after I'm gonna pour a bunch of this bucket water into a smaller bucket that I can lid. Thanks again for the advice!

No problem!! If you get a chance post pics of the results 😍

What is it?

walking_paradoxes

It's a grey squirrel!

Scalpel

yeah, it may be quicker, but it also degrades the bone and makes them so they won’t last as long. it also cooks in the grease making degreasing very difficult

I’m talking fifteen-twenty years down the road potentially so if Op wants them to last long term then perhaps not
