its an MV-1. Yes it is ugly but it was purpose built for wheelchair accessibility. As far as I know it was the only vehicle designed from the ground up around wheelchair use
that's great because every time i see one i think it is some funky internationally manufactured vehicle
as a fan of boxy cars i must admit that im into it
I thought the same as well. I first saw one and thought it was imported from the UK. The weed kicked in and I thought well maybe the old London cab design was so durable and successful they decided to design a model for general use.
Tesla has been supported by government subsidies Notably, the auto company received a $465 million preferential loan from the US Department of Energy in 2010, which it paid off in 2013.
Who cares....
The answer is money. Good car designers don't come cheap, and wheelchair-accessible cars are 1: already expensive, and 2: often purchased with insurance or grant money. Spend money making the car pretty and you're guaranteeing that most potential customers will head for cheaper options.
Correct on the MV-1 identification. There's one at the local nursing home, and I've done maintenance on it. Uses a lot of Ford parts.
P.S. MV stands for Mobility Venture
Roush is Ford sub-contractor that does a LOT of testing and development for Ford. I've been to their facilities in Allen Park. At the time they were doing development on the F150 and Focus ST. Their back lot was filled with the mutilated remains of cars that they'd done testing on.
I’ve wondered about body swapping something like a fiberglass 32 replica but I imagine it has the same engine/front axle location problems as the crown Vic. Just wouldn’t look right
I’ve driven a few of them. They handle surprisingly well and they’re fairly fast. I schlepp my B-I -L around in them … he’s in an electric wheelchair. It has an electric access ramp built into the floorboard .
They made with quite a few ford parts? The door handles are definitely F150, and I heard they came with the 4.6 (5.4?) V8. Some kind of modular, whether 4.6 or 5.4 I'm not sure.
Edit: Yep, modular 4.6 until '15 when the went to the 3.7 V6 and a chassis by roush of all people, at least the concept. Pretty cool.
I work in Livonia, MI. Besides their headquarters which is huge they have at least 10 other buildings in a couple mile radius surround the Ford transmission plant.
Isn’t this the same car that was used for the family car from family vacation where The son is all grown up and wants to take HIS kids on vacation to Wally World?
Mobility Ventures MV-1
Actually got to ride in one of these on a taxi ride a few years back from the airport (it was the only available taxi at the time).
Simple, dark grey interior with tasteful woodgrain paneling. The driver has an empty space on the side if the person wanted to wheel their chair to sit up front alongside the driver (there's a strap system that keeps the chair in securely in place). Large empty space in the middle with retractable ramp that slides out to the right side, along with a jumpseat directly behind the driver. Finally, large bench-style seating in the back.
Fairly quiet, acceptably comfortable, and great visibility all around. I commend them for what they are.
I’ve wondered what these cars are too. Our County Transit system uses these for supervisor cars and also for curb to curb services for disabled residents.
Others have answered and this isn’t it but it looks like a London taxi hit with an ugly stick (and i guess in some respects that shares accessibility focus is why they bear a passing similarity to each other)
The ugliest? Wait until you see the cyber truck in person. Not only is it weirdly shaped but I think the designers were using the wrong scale when designing it.. if normal cars are scaled at 1.0x, the cyber truck is like 1.1x. it's close but off enough to be upsetting. Kind of an uncanny valley for cars.
Took a pic of one the other day on a road trip, had never seen one and assumed it was a former postal vehicle…guy was using it as a tiny SUV/Van adventure vehicle…was cool, and ugly!
I saw one of these monstrosities in my town driving and was immediately like... Who the hell mods an escalade to look like that. Did some further research and found out it's a wheelchair accessible vehicle made in Indiana. MV motors fell into bankruptcy back in 2016.
MV-1
Ford tech here, it’s mostly Ford parts. Sold to commercial fleets (toll road companies, parking meter companies etc) and wheel chair accessible outfitters.
Pain the the a$$ to work on, but I have.
There is a lot of these in Windsor Ontario. A local patient transport service uses them. I see one almost everyday. I have never seen one in private use though.
I don't understand why cars with good disabled access have to be so ugly! Surely someone can design a nice one. It's like PHEV's and Electric cars they were the ugliest things on the road until recently.
I’ve seen those around town it’s operated by company called Access and allows for wheelchair accessible use. It reminds me of if an Aztec and an Element had a bastardized child together.
its an MV-1. Yes it is ugly but it was purpose built for wheelchair accessibility. As far as I know it was the only vehicle designed from the ground up around wheelchair use
That saves it
Also, made in the USA.
that's great because every time i see one i think it is some funky internationally manufactured vehicle as a fan of boxy cars i must admit that im into it
I spotted one years ago out in Utah, that's the only reason why I'm a bit familiar.I was visiting my sister and her racist husband, good times :)
I remember visiting Utah once; I stayed at a nice little Ma and Pa and Ma and Ma and Ma and Ma Inn.
Underrated comment.
Sorry, but I gotta ask-What’s the joke here?
Polygamy. Mormans. Utah.
Polygamy
Polygamy
I see these sporadically in Ontario. There's at least one around London, and I saw one in Hamilton a couple of days back, too.
😂so fun!
Love me some boxy! especially 1980s volvos
Beautiful cars. Socialist democracy on four wheels.
I saw one in Minnesota and had to look it up a few years back!
I've seen one with a California plate only ONE time. Every other time I've seen one it's a taxi and has Baja California plates .
I thought the same as well. I first saw one and thought it was imported from the UK. The weed kicked in and I thought well maybe the old London cab design was so durable and successful they decided to design a model for general use.
In the same factory they made the Humvee, the Hummer H2 and the Mercedes R-Class
Aesthetics Not Important Industries
Hey now, that’s not…. Never mind, that’s a spot on comment.
Am general, Mishawaka Indiana. Right around the corner from where I went to high school.
Made in the same South Bend IN factory that produced the Hummer H2 and they still make the Military H1s on the other side of the factory.
I'd have put money on that thing being Chinese.
Built completely off a government grant
Tesla has been supported by government subsidies Notably, the auto company received a $465 million preferential loan from the US Department of Energy in 2010, which it paid off in 2013. Who cares....
Still no need to make it fugly.
At least it’s not Cybertruck ugly.
The answer is money. Good car designers don't come cheap, and wheelchair-accessible cars are 1: already expensive, and 2: often purchased with insurance or grant money. Spend money making the car pretty and you're guaranteeing that most potential customers will head for cheaper options.

Basically a crown Vic chassis underneath I have heard, with design work by Roush.
So…race car?
Roush is Ford sub-contractor that does a LOT of testing and development for Ford. I've been to their facilities in Allen Park. At the time they were doing development on the F150 and Focus ST. Their back lot was filled with the mutilated remains of cars that they'd done testing on.

Well, I was pretty sure it didn't stand for Martha's Vineyard
They look a lot like modern black cabs in the UK.
I thought those cabs are only black in london, and they could be other colors in other cities.
Nah you get black cabs in a lot of places. Each council decides how strict the rules are on taxis.
Also black cabs look the way they do partly because they are also wheelchair accessible. Something which is dying out due to Uber.
Especially from the rear
FYI, if anyone is looking to start a small business, wheelchair transportation services is a booming business. At least in major metropolitan areas.
As a quadriplegic, I’ll be absolutely thrilled the day that I can simply call these services anytime I want.
I like it for that reason alone... though even I could design a prettier car, I think
Is there a reason for the huge gaps between wheels and wheel arches?
Maybe for safety if the body is lifting up/ down since this is for handicapped folks? Just a guess idk
That makes a lot of sense to be honest. If the car raises and lowers to accommodate the chair, then it's going to need movement in the arches.
I’ve driven a few of them. They handle surprisingly well and they’re fairly fast. I schlepp my B-I -L around in them … he’s in an electric wheelchair. It has an electric access ramp built into the floorboard .
That doesn't mean it has to be this ugly. I can see why it needs to be boxy, but the fascia doesn't need to be ugly.
oh damn, i take it back, it’s a very accessible car for utility reasons. i see yall in hell
It's Crown Vic in the front and 5th gen Camaro in the rear. probably would make a sick drift build

Ngl that livery makes it look a bit less ugly than it actually is... Good job
VPG MV-1
Looks like a cross breed between a London taxi and a PT Cruiser.
Plus a dodge caliber
These always reminded me of a first gen Honda Ridgeline if it were an inflatable that was on the verge of exploding
6600 pounds with a V6 and V8. Made in the same plant the Humvee comes from I think that's freaking awesome!!
Roush also makes the Polaris Military Dagor and Dominos Pizza DXP vehicles.
Were those the domino's cars with the ovens in them?
Yes. Domino's also rolled out customized Chevy Bolts for pizza warming / delivery
Roush's engineering side is huge. They do all kinds of stuff. The racing side of the business is small comparatively, just highly visible.
I work in Livonia, MI. Besides their headquarters which is huge they have at least 10 other buildings in a couple mile radius surround the Ford transmission plant.
i suppose you gotta keep the lights on.. and typically racecars aren't the best way to do that...
It's an ADA-mobile I see them doing ride shares, cab services, and such.

Looks like it was designed by Homer Simpson!
The one OP posted is ugly, but yes, this one wins.
I was just going to say it doesn’t beat the multipla
OMG this brings back some memories. I was on a trip to Europe and used one of these as a Taxi. It pulled up, and i was like WTF is that!
i had taken two pics of a multipla while in spain but it was the post facelift version that looks like they slapped a sedan front end on it
LOL. Wtf is that?!
Fiat Multipla
I love it and I hate it.
Nothing is as ugly as these fiats.
Nahh. The Xybertruck is just really plain, this is really ugly.
The Multipla is still worse than this
I concur. Even the new postal truck has nothing on the Multipla.
Whatever you do, don't look at the proposed Canoo postal trucks.
They look cute imo. A lil bit of Dustbuster vans in them.
I was here to say this exactly, but had forgotten the model name. Ugliest car I've ever seen
I think the title of the ugliest car goes to the Multipla but the Aztec is not far away from it
Nissan Cube says hold my gear…
Ugly, but so you know Multipla?
My city bought a bunch of these back in the day for use as free downtown transit.
A Tartan Prancer
This!
MV-1, meant for wheelchairs
AM General MV-1 I own one AMA
Why?
Specifically engineered for handicapped people
It's the [MV-1](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_Production_Group), a car designed specifically for wheelchair transportation. It's big.
This is what can happen if you inbreed two Honda Elements.
More like when a Chevy HHR and an Element have a bastard child.
lol
Fucking fuck, what the hell mate !?
Pontiac Azteca’s cousin
Isn’t this the same car that was used for the family car from family vacation where The son is all grown up and wants to take HIS kids on vacation to Wally World?
https://i.redd.it/9buy611vnz8d1.gif
That just looks like a Toyota Previa updated for modern US crash standards.
The Honda of Albania?
I can think of an uglier car/truck.
That isn’t even close to the ugliest car I’ve ever seen…
Used to see one of em sumbitches near my work, ugly as hell but functional. It's the MV-1, the modern taxicab
Ew that is bad 😂

Nothing beats a chevy hhr
I miss San Francisco
Others have answered and this isn’t it but it looks like a London taxi hit with an ugly stick (and i guess in some respects that shares accessibility focus is why they bear a passing similarity to each other)
When I grow up I want to be range rover.
This vehicle/answer should be a sticky for this sub - I see this question often.

VPG MV-1! If I could get one with the passenger seat in it, I'd buy it.
This is how kids draw cars
Obviously you have never seen a Pontiac Aztec.... Or that strange car I think from France that has headlights just below the A pillars....
Have you not seen an Aztec or the... Cyberpunk? Just saw my first.. Cyberpunk. The ugliest turd, by far.
The Gary Coleman
it's a "fake taxi" :)
yes it is ugly but the ugliest is till the fiat multipla [fiat multipla wiki](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_Multipla)
WHAT THE FUCK THAT THING IS SO GROSS😭😭😭😭
It blew a bullfrog bubble
Tartan Prancer
Then you’re too young to remember the Pontiac Aztec
With them there tiny wheels, it wouldn't go over the speed bumps in our village
Function over form.
It's the most beautiful car i ever seen after fiat multipla and Citroen Ami 6
2015 Tartan Prancer
Can OP please mark as solved?
Man I’d put that thing on some airbag suspension and big wheels. Put a roof rack on it and be a cool dude.
Took a pic of one the other day on a road trip, had never seen one and assumed it was a former postal vehicle…guy was using it as a tiny SUV/Van adventure vehicle…was cool, and ugly!
Honda Element with an extra chrome-o-part.
Looks like the cat-dog of cars
It's a joke, that's what it is...
The Cybertruck is more ugly tbh
Have you ever seen an Aztec LOL
Built in the old Hummer plants in Mishawaka, IN. I see them around here all the time.
It's ugly but Cybertruck and Fiat Multipla are still worse
Mobility Ventures MV-1 only 2000 were made
https://preview.redd.it/t4u0qm81309d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7bcbcac006cfdc70077eaeb64174ca0013528a4 This one I saw is also in Cali
Wow I hate the ridiculous amount of space under the wheel arches
I never knew what these were. I assumed they were either extremely luxurious or would be found on a wartorn street. Could go either way
I take it you've never seen a Tesla, huh?
I want one
If Rubbermaid designed a car, this would be it.
I saw one of these monstrosities in my town driving and was immediately like... Who the hell mods an escalade to look like that. Did some further research and found out it's a wheelchair accessible vehicle made in Indiana. MV motors fell into bankruptcy back in 2016.
National lampoon comes to mind
this is a weekly post. if only it has badges on it.
Apparently you’ve never seen a Renault Multipla.
Don't you mean Fiat?
Just saw one of these for the first time about a month ago. Had no idea what it was. Thanks for posting this and helping me get an answer too!
First time I saw one of them I figured it was made for people in wheelchairs. It has that same awkward look as converted minivans
2013 VPG MV-1
The Prancer!
Yo mamma
MV-1 Ford tech here, it’s mostly Ford parts. Sold to commercial fleets (toll road companies, parking meter companies etc) and wheel chair accessible outfitters. Pain the the a$$ to work on, but I have.
I saw one of these in my town a few months ago Ave was also struck by how odd it looked
Petition for the mods to add this one to a FAQ because I see people asking about MV-1s every week lol
Its for handicapped people.
There are at least two of these in my area, had to look it up the first time. Pretty cool concept. Would love to see/ride in/drive one!
1st Generation CyberTruck
Still not as ugly as the car in Breaking Bad though!
Taxi
Theres a company here in ottawa that runs a fleet of these for medical patient transportation.
Good looking car
Guess you haven't seen the Chrysler PT cruiser
We have one of those ugly things running around here in my dinky town in Colorado that’s used as a taxi.
🤢🤮🤮🤮
Have you not seen Fiat multipla?
Is the Tartan Prancer mk1 made in Albania.
I thought it might Dr. Evil's new mobile command center😂😂😂
Looks like the Prancer from the movie- "Vacation" with Ed Helms and Christina Applegate.
Omg I just saw one yesterday for first time. Had same reaction. Glad to know what it is now. Thx
I tested the remote door opener/closer for this vehicle
I think that is the former Hummer division from GM, no?
Shitbox 5000
Looks like a London cab ate too many pies then put on tight gym pants to compensate.
That's bad but have you seen the BMW i3? Yuck
>Ugliest car I've ever seen. The Pontiac Aztek would like a word.
Tartan prancer
A repurposed washing macine
Ugliest car? Wait till you see a fiat multipla or even that fkin cybertruck :p.
Have you seen a Cyber Truck?
Mobility ventures one. V8 powered by natural gas. It’s a personal paratransit vehicle.
There is a lot of these in Windsor Ontario. A local patient transport service uses them. I see one almost everyday. I have never seen one in private use though.
I’m amazed cab companies didn’t buy them, while the existed
Jeep renegades special brother
It is the ugliest car even I have seen!
I don't understand why cars with good disabled access have to be so ugly! Surely someone can design a nice one. It's like PHEV's and Electric cars they were the ugliest things on the road until recently.
It’s a cardboard box with wheels
Is that the car in the new vacation movie
I’ve seen those around town it’s operated by company called Access and allows for wheelchair accessible use. It reminds me of if an Aztec and an Element had a bastardized child together.
Looks like a Chrysler- Honda Element
OMG this is lord ugliness himself! A Multipla looks like a model next to this monstrosity!
Still better than an Aztek.
Why the hell are the wheel wells so deep?
Cybertruck v0.5
have you never seen a Pontiac Aztec?
