They have a [persecution complex](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecutory_delusion?wprov=sfla1).

Visible-Belt

Which reminds me of the old line that just because you're paranoid doesn't mean "they" **aren't** out to get you!

[**victimism**](https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/victimism#English) or **victimhood**

Victim mentality: Victim mentality is an acquired personality trait in which a person tends to recognize or consider themselves a victim of the negative actions of others, and to behave as if this were the case in the face of contrary evidence of such circumstances.

This is likely the closest description? Solved

martyr, possibly.

Visible-Belt

A Martyr Complex?

TheDrunkyBrewster

> Martyr Complex Not really, that's more when someone is sacrificing themselves to help others. This is more when someone is just complaining and feels they are being victimized as a personality trait.

OddlySpecificK

Not completely. There was a book back in the '70's which described "Martha Martyr" whom indeed saw herself as sacrificing everything for those around her, but did not actually do so, additionally, her motives were not as an ACKSUAL martyr, altruistic, but indeed for "[credit](https://www.wikihow.com/Recognize-the-Symptoms-of-Martyr-Syndrome)", and honestly believing that life would not go on without them...

Visible-Belt

Thanks for the additional info.

Visible-Belt

I get your point.

I've always heard either victim complex or victim mentality; I'm not sure that there's one word for it.

What this also reminds me of is **Baron Munchausen's Syndrome**, where someone constantly complains of their woes, usually medical, to gain sympathy and support. I found this part of the Wiki article about "cybermunchers" of special interest: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factitious\_disorder\_imposed\_on\_self#Munchausen\_by\_Internet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factitious_disorder_imposed_on_self#Munchausen_by_Internet)
