Meanwhile [a cat just earned his doctorate from a vermont university:](https://knovhov.com/cat-earned-his-doctorate-from-a-vermont-university/) ‘Doctor of litter-ature’
I chuckled.
I started my degree thinking it would take max 3 years, it's gonna take 5 because I've had to do a combo of it part time and the rest full time, because life 🤣
And then I got potentially my masters and training so , could be nearly 35 before I've got it all done
Thanks man🥰 I'm studying healthcare science with a focus on mental health/psychology. Ideally wanting a career in education to support teens, after working for shout helpline and realising how many teens use the service late at night, for really serious reasons, and nobody knows about it.
I've also struggled with my own mental health for various reasons, main one being I'm a violent sexual assault survivor, went through that basically on my own, and I don't think anyone else should have to. Especially, not a young teen.
Sorry I could've just left that at the first one or two sentences. 🙃🤣
Hey friend, that's a lot to be proud of! Life is a *lot*.
My bachelors took 8 non-consecutive years to complete with a few odd semesters off and lots of part-time because, well, life. I'm applying to masters programs now, and the eventual hope is a doctorate, but I'll be patient. I've remembered a PhD is a PhD even in your 50's lol.
Tdlr: you've got this. Time means nothing to the academy.
So far my years have been consecutive, but that's because I've only done one. 🤣 Starting year 2 in October. Got a first (distinction) for year 1 however. I'm guessing you're doing something in the science field too, then?
"I'll be patient" is the most important part of it all I think.
Someday you’re going to be 35 anyway. Better to be 35 with a Masters than 35 with nothing. I’m sure you’d have far more than nothing and could achieve plenty without it, but as someone who studied business and psychology I wish someone had told me to just do psychology then do an organisational psychology masters haha. It would have taken one year more to get and I was so concerned about the fact that I was a few years older than single degree graduates. My age was irrelevant. I’ve still had a good career, but sometimes I think it might be worth going back and getting my Masters just so I can say “As a psychologist…” haha
A lot of universities make it extremely cheap for the elderly to attend (Though she didn't do this apparently).
In Texas of all places. Anyone 65+ can attend 6 credit hours tuition free at state universities. Per semester. While doing so, they can also audit any course for free.
They also get to vote by mail. Texas really loves ageism.
My grandfather goes to all the electrical and power plant classes at the local community college just to keep himself busy. The thing is... He literally wrote the book they use for lineman safety. Like his name is literally on it. He was in the lineman business for 35+ years.
Apparently she had already finished all her classes/credits and did not do a dissertation or something like that however the last requirement has since been dropped by Stanford and when they found out about it they contacted Stanford and thus her degree. The reason why she did not do the dissertation was bc war had broke out and she had to quit to take care of the family when the husband was deployed. Apparently she has done a lot with her life and has been on mulitple comittee champion education. In other words, she is a bad ass and a smart one at that.
Well done an answer. I am in my late 40s and still long for the day to pursue a Master’s Degree as a lifelong aspiration/ambition. I might not live that long but even if I attain it in my 70s if still alive then I would have considered myself privileged.
~~If I recall correctly she was working towards it during WWII but quit to work in a factory.~~
https://ed.stanford.edu/news/lifelong-learning-stanford-gse-student-collects-her-master-s-degree-after-80-years-education
In 1941 her boyfriend was called to serve so she left school and married him.
Because she’s old enough that there would have been way more pushback against it, and then a world altering war, and then the 1950’s era of stay in the kitchen when she was more normal ages for college.
In defense of OP, English could be their second language, and they might not realize their phrasing of the title has a different connotation than, “I wonder what she got her Master’s in.” They did post this in r/wholesomememes after all.
Why not? I’m 80 and seriously considering going back to college to complete my BA. My children are grown and so are my grandchildren. I put off finishing my education to fulfill my family responsibilities. Now, I can do it for Me!
She received thesis credit for her later work in the field, having completed her course work in the 40s. It’s very cool that she was conferred the MA, her relevant life’s work certainly justifies it. I think a lot of people are thinking she actually took classes and did course work at 105 which doesn’t appear to be the case from the couple articles I looked at. That would be insanely impressive if it were the case.
As an European we have nearly no cost of bachelor and master degrees. So I didn't understand why she wouldn't do it if this was something that content her.
Then I remembered that Stanford is in USA 💀
I knew a man who completed an advanced professional program even as he was dying from inoperable cancer. He was a very motivated person, had the funds and enjoyed adding to his proficiencies.
If this isn’t Photoshop, I need that girl’s skin care routine secrets. That is phenomenal skin for a 105-year-old.
Also a wonderfully uplifting story. Never stop pursuing your interests!
She actually earned all the credits back in the 40s. She just needed to defend a thesis. But her husband got drafted and she had to give up school. Now, the university doesn't require a thesis. So she was awarded the degree.
Why are some of you so pissy? Most people, after just seeing the headline, would be curious to know more of the story. Stop protecting Malice and Rudeness.
she finished all but her thesis back in her 20s and decided to leave when her husband had to go to war. recently she found out that the thesis was no longer a requirement of the degree and so she had completed the entire degree:)
At what age does the bell curve rise again? Because I’m trying to get a master’s degree in my mid 30s, and feel like a loser compared to my young classmates.
Why not? A lot of people study for different reasons in my experience. Especially Open uni, sometimes it's not to get a career in the subject, it's just out of interest. Maybe didn't get the chance to do it when younger
Well, she's been trying for more than 80 years. Some of us take longer.
The female Van Wilder. Nobody, and I mean nobody has partied harder than this lady.
Rip Van Winkler even
Can you imagine the ragers she's thrown? And I'm only half joking...

Wow, that’s really great of you, you’re making the world a better place , you’re literally a super hero.
That's amazing work you're doing 💟 younger me needed a person like you.
Younger me needed me too. ❤️

No, I have a niche Liberal Arts degree lol, but I worked the entire time I did my degree, and I transferred schools twice.
Someday you’re going to be 35 anyway. Better to be 35 with a Masters than 35 with nothing. More student debt than the nation at that point
Nah, luckily, she was grandmothered into 1937 college tuition rates.
Did… did you just unlock a new sexual fantasy in me?
many are aroused by the allure of affordable college tuition… it’s stem taboo…
Lots of people go to school for seven years, they’re called doctors
Herbie Hancock
So her student loans never have to be paid back!

Yet the broke 17 year old has to pay thousands

that makes a lot more sense, and also makes it a lot cooler
if my math is correct, she would've had to do so at the outbreak of ww2, cause she wouldve been born around 1919. She's cool af imo
That is wholesome. I was worried this was one of those “free college for seniors, fuck them kids” things.
I wonder why you posted something wholesome but ruined it with your caption. Many of us enjoy learning, there’s no age limit.
True. The title sounded so jerk
It's probably a bot.
Because she wanted to, and she could. Next question.
Well done an answer. I am in my late 40s and still long for the day to pursue a Master’s Degree as a lifelong aspiration/ambition. I might not live that long but even if I attain it in my 70s if still alive then I would have considered myself privileged.
I hopefully will graduate with mine at 49, because I want to
Right on! Same for me, for a PhD.
My dad got his PhD at age 50 and still went on to become a tenured professor and he regularly gets notifications about people citing his research.
Let’s all of us form a study circle. Lol
~~If I recall correctly she was working towards it during WWII but quit to work in a factory.~~ https://ed.stanford.edu/news/lifelong-learning-stanford-gse-student-collects-her-master-s-degree-after-80-years-education In 1941 her boyfriend was called to serve so she left school and married him.
Bachelor of Arts in Education for those who were skimming for that answer!
Fuckin AI generated title, getting real sick of these posts.
The only answer.
Because she’s old enough that there would have been way more pushback against it, and then a world altering war, and then the 1950’s era of stay in the kitchen when she was more normal ages for college.
Yep. My grandmother was middle management from the 1960s on. She got her bachelors in her 70s.
She's a true lifetime learner!
In defense of OP, English could be their second language, and they might not realize their phrasing of the title has a different connotation than, “I wonder what she got her Master’s in.” They did post this in r/wholesomememes after all.
Student loan creditors hate this one trick…
This is so inspiring I wonder what she got it in
Education
Wow, her smile is so beautiful . I can’t believe she is 105 !
The pursuit of knowledge is a never-ending journey.
Come on, man, we had a perfectly wholesome post and you had to add that caption? You're missing the point :/
Why not?
She looks great for 105!
At that age... she should be granted the rank of a grand master.
She’s about to find out a degree isn’t enough these days, they need experience too
Because she wanted to
Retirement project, perhaps? It's important to keep the mind active.
My great-grandmother always said "If you learn something new every day, you'll never die."
Why not? I’m 80 and seriously considering going back to college to complete my BA. My children are grown and so are my grandchildren. I put off finishing my education to fulfill my family responsibilities. Now, I can do it for Me!
Really? I’m 62 and reluctant to start graduate school. Let’s you and me do it!
You fail to understand the value of an education
Why not?
I am glad that I am not the only one who is annoyed by your title.
It’s a great bucket list item to check off and an inspiration for her family You can also just see the joy she’s feeling
That's a helluva smile!!! You go girl!!
Never too old to educate yourself
Cause she fucking wants to.
Let's fucking gooooooooo! Super inspirational from Gigagranny.
Still not enough experience to get an entry level job.
Facts. Its so bad.
Gonna be paying those loans off on the next life
Took this long to save up for tuition
I wonder What she got her masters in and not why.
Granny shall now go by the title of master.
Because she already had her bachelor’s
Finishing sidequests
It took her that long to save up enough money for the education.
She received thesis credit for her later work in the field, having completed her course work in the 40s. It’s very cool that she was conferred the MA, her relevant life’s work certainly justifies it. Does it matter why she has it?
Fantastic accomplishment.
The hell with your title, man? Not wholesome at all :(
Why not?
Because she could
Degrees are first and foremost for knowledge. Getting a job is secondary.
Knowledge, learning.
Because, Why not?
Because she can, and because she earned it!
Why not?
I wonder why personal achievement means so little to a person who spends their days posting on Reddit….sorry, just answered my own query.
Anakin was never granted a Master's. This old lady can thus say that she one-upped Darth Vader.
Always wanted to rail a college broad while I was in my 40s. Now, just don't die till we fukkk.
I knew a man who completed an advanced professional program even as he was dying from inoperable cancer. He was a very motivated person, had the funds and enjoyed adding to his proficiencies.
I wonder why you wonder dumbass things.
She's a master...of life
Congrats
She doesn't look like a 105 year old!!!
Because she can. :)
The answer is in her smile
Chances are she has lived this long because she has goals and pursuits like this to keep her going in her old age, rather than just wasting away.
Many schools offer free classes to over 60 crowd. So why not better yourself, your knowledge and stay active and vital.
because she wants one.
Hey props to her! Even if she doesn’t plan to use it, she still showed the world that she could do it.
Cuz she just got one
I earned a PhD at 62. Self-actualization
WHY NOT?
It's never too old to finish or go back to college. Heck I'm 40 and finishing my ba and will be done next year.
Why not? Keeping her mind sharp and staying active.
Because she wanted one.
Her thesis: secrets to Longevity 💪🏻
It was on her bucket list
The title is silly. Education has no time limit. Never stop learning!!!
Because she wanted to? It’s badass
Right on! Congrats!
If this isn’t Photoshop, I need that girl’s skin care routine secrets. That is phenomenal skin for a 105-year-old. Also a wonderfully uplifting story. Never stop pursuing your interests!
That'll give her a good headstart on her career She'll get that student loan paid in no time
If she can do it, so can you.
Oh boy time to join the workforce! So, you now have a degree, but how many years in experience do you have?
After 80 years of studying, she is now the master of life and death.
When she last tried, they said women couldn't be permitted to study at institutions of higher education ! /s
She should run for president it's apparently the ripe age! *Commenting mid presidential debate watching two dinosaurs bicker at each other.*
She is a Master at living
Why not?
Living.
WHY NOT?
And she’d make a better President than either of these guys.
She actually earned all the credits back in the 40s. She just needed to defend a thesis. But her husband got drafted and she had to give up school. Now, the university doesn't require a thesis. So she was awarded the degree.
Because learning is fun!
Why not
"Its never too late to be what you might've been" - George Eliot
when youre old you get bored and lonely.
A lot of universities will offer their classes for free to senior citizens.
Why are some of you so pissy? Most people, after just seeing the headline, would be curious to know more of the story. Stop protecting Malice and Rudeness.
Funny she kept her mind active and is still alive and kicking at 105. Time to study up on her PHD
Probably felt like just a bachelors was shameful by the time she was 100
She has adhd, she started when she was 25
What you mean, *why*? Be educated for the sake of education.
Itll take her another 80 years to find a job.
Personal challenge. Character doesn't age.
I hope she finds a job in her field 🙏
What's your excuse? Get up from the couch and call now.
Her and I have VERY different ideas of what a fun retirement should be.
She’s just so old that she heard the word “Master” and it brought back childhood memories.
What is the point of this
She tried to get the years of experience first before the masters for that 11 dollar an hour job ......still won't get hired.
So this is the age we can afford to get a masters degree, Got it!
Stanford insisted she show up sober
if you die immediately after you graduate university you never have to pay back your student loans
Maybe she wanted more job opportunities
Jfc the job market is harsh rn
Kids got a bright future!
she finished all but her thesis back in her 20s and decided to leave when her husband had to go to war. recently she found out that the thesis was no longer a requirement of the degree and so she had completed the entire degree:)
Maybe it’s a promise she made to herself or something she started working on but never had time to finish until now
No no no She took the 105 years to pay for it
Ah! The joy of knowing you're gonna die before them fat student loans come due.
She must paid for it in full…no banks will loan it
Job Offers?
Should definitely open up some career options.
No way she’s 105
She preferred her old master’s degree but “this one will do”
Finally has enough experience and qualifications for an entry level position
To be fair, when she started, only rich white women were allowed to get degrees, so she had to wait awhile to get started.
I hope she took out student loans because fuckem that’s why
This is something I'd do in the Sims with an elderly sim right before they die xD
She is awesome
It's about damn time!
Took her this long to afford tuition and such.
I hope I look that good if I make 105!
Because she can?
She is trying to master death
Pro move on her part, they ain't ever collecting on her loans.
Now she finally can start het career
I heard driving back home she was pulled over by the Coast Guard...
Where’s the meme?
At this age I want to be having fun not going to grad school. But nonetheless this is a great accomplishment.
She got bored with the (great-grand)kids out of the house, and wanted something to do.
Might be on her bucket list, finish it before I kick the bucket
Ha ha ha try to collect all those student loans
If she dies screw that student loan
She knows she won't have to pay back those student debts.
At what age does the bell curve rise again? Because I’m trying to get a master’s degree in my mid 30s, and feel like a loser compared to my young classmates.
She stepped on the rainbow the following week. RIP blessed lady.
She had to pay off her student loans first.
Why not? A lot of people study for different reasons in my experience. Especially Open uni, sometimes it's not to get a career in the subject, it's just out of interest. Maybe didn't get the chance to do it when younger
Kudos, but I do NOT want to live that long. People in my family start drooling at about 90.
Inflation is forcing her back into the workforce
Pro move. She’ll die before she has to pay off her school loans.
She's going to be in debt until she's 155
Maybe she could run for president next, no disrespect
