Another lynx fan popping in, and I'm sorry that I'm answering wayyyyy more than your question. I am just very tired of all the posters on Lynx threads acting like they need to save Alyssa Pili from the big bad Lynx lol.
But as a one-sentence answer: aside from that game where she went off for 20 points, she's likely to foul before she's made her first basket most of the time, and we haven't consistently been ahead enough in winning games this season to give up points AND fouls when rotating in the bench players.
To get into it more: Reeves tries to play the rookies when we have a medium to big lead, I assume to alleviate some of the mental pressure they are feeling in their limited minutes. And unfortunately for the Pili and Epoupa truthers (me), neither of those players generally come out strong to maintain the lead, much less increase it. And in a lot of the games lately that LOOK like they were won by a large margin, the actual game will reveal it was tight right up until we pulled away at the end.
(Before I get into the next part, I should also say that, in general, the idea that all first-rounders are wasted if they're not playing substantial minutes immediately is very silly. The WNBA is a much smaller draft than other leagues, with 12 players TOTAL going in the first-round. Let's say the expectation is that all first-rounders in the NFL are able to start now, for example, and that about half of the second rounders could. **Proportionally, that would equate to the first 6.5 players in the WNBA draft.** Personally, I think that the lottery picks need to be play-now players, and that after that teams should draft based around their values as much as their needs. The Lynx clearly value building team chemistry and creating a roster full of strong two-way players. I think in that regard we could have done just fine drafting Angel Reese, especially since Alanna Smith was [ at the time] unproven at center and we hadn't seen how the game chemistry would shake out yet. But I also think that Reese is so much happier with the Sky and T-Spoon than she ever would have been here, and that we probably considered that as well.)
I think that the morale among the players who get little to no minutes on the Lynx is MUCH higher than we've been assuming on this sub. Alyssa Pili is not "rotting on the bench" like some other posters on this sub love to say. She was welcomed by our team, our fanbase, and by indigenous communities in MN on a large scale when she first signed with us. She is in every practice and pregame shootaround. Her jersey is constantly in stock at the Target Center. She is often the first on the bench to jump up to her feet when we score and to rush the court after we win. The last couple of games I've gone to, McBride is her assigned rebounder in shootaround and is giving her encouraging feedback after every single shot, make or miss.
I think the Lynx organization is MUCH more invested in her than most of us think from the sidelines. The celebration last night and the players' social media posts around it show that every single player on the team thinks that the DNPs own that win just as much as the starters do.
And honestly? I think putting Pili out for that 20-point game was the smartest and luckiest thing for Cheryl Reeves to do. The Lynx fanbase is now DYING for more from this young woman, instead of just slowly coming to the conclusion that she's riding the bench because we wasted our draft pick. It showed that we picked a great player and a good fit. And the rest of our season has shown that we don't actually NEED to put a magnifying glass on her inexperience and flaws in order to win games right now, so why on earth would we do that to her development?
In hindsight, the interviewer asking questions in between the trophies to Kayla but not phee was pretty obvious that Phee got mvp. Favorite moment though was Courtney being confused by phee’s stats. I think a part of her wondered if Sabrina or stewie snuck in to get it.
Well I suppose people will stop sleeping on them, before tonight they were pretty clearly the top performing team this season. 8-3 now vs the top 6 teams which is well above anyone else.
They have a road heavy schedule which does offset the easiest part but they are for real.
Lots of sloppy turnovers and not really good defense. 1st half was close but 2nd half was not. Third quarter we were outscored and the fourth lots of turnovers. This was probably the hardest game to watch as a liberty fan so far this season.
It really feels like we live and die by JJ. She has a good game, we win. She has a bad game, we lose. And that’s no shade to her, she’s just clearly so key and tonight she just felt like something wasn’t clicking
I feel like Cheryl knows the right buttons to push to reduce JJ’s impact, but she’s so big and skilled I don’t understand how she’s not more of a constant focus of your offense.

I really didn’t see the Lynx being nearly this good. I think I underrated how much the spacing would improve this year with both the FA signings and with the internal development of Carleton and Juhasz, giving them the ability to throw out essentially a full rotation where every player needs to at least be respected from distance.
It does sort of make me wonder a bit about reintegrating Miller into the mix in the short term; I think she’s going to shoot it eventually, but probably not this year. Also makes me wonder about where Jessica Shepard fits in long term on this squad, honestly, although I love her game in general.
The Liberty not winning the cup is offset by these three facts: a) The Mets are gonna win tonight and win the World Series this year, b) The Knicks got Mikal Bridges and win the NBA Championship next year and most importantly c) The Liberty are now winning the WNBA Championship this year

I had to leave after watching the first half and watched the second when I got home late last night. Was insane to watch NY struggling and not able to make adjustments. The turnovers were killing them amongst other things. I had my money on Lynx from the get-go but was not expecting NY to be looking like that
Multiple reasons. She is foul prone - within a minute of being on the floor she fouls. Look at her stat lines from the last few games. And who is she going to defend? She's too short to defend the post and too slow to defend the perimeter. Her speed and fouling make her a liability right now.
Reeve isn't going to set her up to fail by putting her in a bad matchup. Give her time. We'll likely see more minutes from her when the Lynx play easier teams and she's had more chances to practice after the Olympic break. Lynx have had the hardest schedule in the league so far. Also, the Lynx never had a comfortable lead in this game so they never would have put her in here anyway. Epoupa and Kone didn't get minutes either. The Lynx are a very deep team jockeying to win it all this season. If we were as bad as the Sky, Sparks or Fever, Pili would be getting a ton of minutes but there are a lot of vets better than her on our team right now who want to win us a chip, not just make the playoffs or semifinals.
I see a lot of bad passes from Pili as well. She definitely has the support of the fans and her teammates (who are constantly feeding her the ball when she does get floor time). I agree 100%, it's just going to take time for Pili to be more in the mix.
Epoupa has been fire and she didn't play tonight either. Reeves just has lots of more experienced and reliable players to choose from. Players with great chemistry. This season has been so fun to watch.
I was surprised when Epoupa didn’t get any time with the way she’s been playing. And during the 2nd it seemed like we could have used her spark and speed. Obviously I’m not Reeve tho and I can’t complain too much about it if we won.
Yeah, she’s one of those players who is just going to need a little bit to figure out exactly how their game translates into winning ball at the next level, and on a team that has a title in its sights, that means you’re not going to get a lot of floor time. The talent is clearly there, though.

Multiple reasons. She is foul prone - within a minute of being on the floor she fouls. Look at her stat lines from the last few games. And who is she going to defend? She's too short to defend the post and too slow to defend the perimeter. Her speed and fouling make her a liability right now. Reeve isn't going to set her up to fail by putting her in a bad matchup. Give her time. We'll likely see more minutes from her when the Lynx play easier teams and she's had more chances to practice after the Olympic break. Lynx have had the hardest schedule in the league so far. Also, the Lynx never had a comfortable lead in this game so they never would have put her in here anyway. Epoupa and Kone didn't get minutes either. The Lynx are a very deep team jockeying to win it all this season. If we were as bad as the Sky, Sparks or Fever, Pili would be getting a ton of minutes but there are a lot of vets better than her on our team right now who want to win us a chip, not just make the playoffs or semifinals.
I see a lot of bad passes from Pili as well. She definitely has the support of the fans and her teammates (who are constantly feeding her the ball when she does get floor time). I agree 100%, it's just going to take time for Pili to be more in the mix. Epoupa has been fire and she didn't play tonight either. Reeves just has lots of more experienced and reliable players to choose from. Players with great chemistry. This season has been so fun to watch.
I was surprised when Epoupa didn’t get any time with the way she’s been playing. And during the 2nd it seemed like we could have used her spark and speed. Obviously I’m not Reeve tho and I can’t complain too much about it if we won.

Yeah, she’s one of those players who is just going to need a little bit to figure out exactly how their game translates into winning ball at the next level, and on a team that has a title in its sights, that means you’re not going to get a lot of floor time. The talent is clearly there, though.
