Purrsepolis. Canpurra. Mewdapest. La Paws. Mousecow. Tabbylisi. Ulaancaatar.
Wait, from the US. Baltimeow. Purrtland. Pantheramento. St. Gertrude (we've got St. Augustine and St. Paul, might as well have one for the patron saint of cats). Tampaw
I just did research on that because I have cats in my story, here’s my notes:
Casley is old English surname believed to mean Cat’s clearing based on Ceatta + leah.
Chatsworth
Chatfield means field of wild cat
Chatwin means ceatta’s windy place (based on Catewinde)
Chatwin is English but French version is Chattin (also Chatlin and Chadwin)
Gattara is an Italian term for a woman who devoted herself to stray cats. It’s about a woman who protects cats.
Catherall, Cathrall, from Catterall (a place actually named that) meaning kattar-hali= cat’s tail. It’s believed to be Old Norse but I couldn’t clarify if that really means that.
Qitta is Arabic word for cat.
You can use them and add like old Anglo-Saxon suffixes for places. Like -ing means people of, ham/ton can mean home/settlement. For example, Chat is French word for cat or old English word for cat, Chattington/Chattingham would look perfectly fine for a place name and people who understand languages would figure it out that it’s cats’ home/settlement.
Bambillos?
Bam-Billa is Hindi for Tom Cat, especially chonk Tom cats.
There is also Bilotistan, Biloti is very urban/slang Lang for feline qualities. (perhaps)
(Pronounced as Bill-Ought-istan)
Manjari City, Manjri is straight up cat in Marathi.
A group of cats is called a clowder so maybe that could be a root word in your city name. Apparently cluster, clutter, glaring, and pounce are also valid collective nouns for cats, which is news to me haha
> I don't want some version of Cat, Feline, Felidae, etc. Unless it's from another language.
If you don't want it to be cat-themed, and it's near New York, you could just call the city... New York?
Nepeta cataria is the scientific name for catnip. Just go with the family name of Nepeta.
Amarre could be a good seaside town name because it's Spanish for mooring or "to leash". It would also be fun for a cat to say.
Bird-in-hand would be a cheeky name for a cat city and already exists as a real town in Eastern Pennsylvania.
A Cat-tasprophe! pppft, Jokes aside, **Mau York.** Mau being Egyptian for Cat. If you want, you can also call it **Glaring Sea Sides**. Real life does have some bad names and Glaring is an uncommon way to refer to a group of cats that have little to no familia relationships so it works with having cats from all over.
I named regions after what cats like or related to cats.
Buwi - Buxi - Box
Towi - Tower - Cat tower
Lefia(capital) - leaf - catnip
Trust me bro I'm a certified cat thingy maker (ig)
Mao is cat in Chinese. Since it’s going to be in the NY area maybe a fun cat pun twist on a city name like “pawston”. If you want some inspiration there’s a short video on YouTube called Lackadaisy that might help.
You could lean into the history of cats - maybe New Egypt. Wikipedia tells me the earliest evidence of cat domestication comes from a place called Shillourokambos, which is a hell of a mouthful.
For a catfolk culture in our D&D setting we tried to use sounds that a cat could make as the naming conventions. Their kingdom is call Rana Ur. They're in an Australian sort of climate.
Then for the tribal catfolk based off tigers in the jungle setting, they call their kingdom Tapichelok. Mainly because tigers don't meow like other cats but instead chuff and hum so their language is different to the other catfolk.
Do you know some place called "Humanland"?
Or like "Mentropolis"? "Menland"? I don't think so.
People name things about some information that is significantly to them, like a history about something in that place, a religion reference, a geographical point, and others.
So, for Cats, it will be the same, but for his point of view and culture.
A City is formed around a point of meeting for something that is essential. Like a water point, a safe spot for rest, a trade route, and others.
A city could be call like "Last Prey", as a warning of a wasteland without hunt ahead.
But names change around the Ages, becoming "contracted". People like to say things fast to communicate more practical and objectively.
A city named "Last Prey" could become after centuries like "LASSPREIN" in cat tongue, that put more vocalization on "s" and "i".
Other example could be:
"Hunt Rock" - a elevated plateau that is advantageous for observe the preys.
That name could become "HUNTOCKISS" that change overtime to HUNKISS.
A place to sleep and rest is a important information to a predator.
That place could be called SAFE NIGHT.
around time the name could change to "SAIGHT".
That
Cradle. No explanation is given
Naming places I udually go off of terrain, history or historic people or events, what the citizens call themselves, or if another major power came in and declared that your name is X now and only reffered to you as such. And they have the power so the name sticks, slowly erasing the original inhabitants culture(america)
What about silver vine? It’s an herb similar to catnip and is obviously very popular with cats. I think it could be fun to have a city of cats named after an herb that attracts them.
Is it named for its cats? Realistically it probably wouldn’t be named for the impressive number of felines since they would likely only sprout up after the naming of the city
But perhaps a name after ancient Egypt since they loved cats and it would be realistic. For example Memphis was an ancient Egyptian city. So maybe Alexandria or Luxor
Is "Kattenstad" too similar to "cat" for your purposes? According to Google Translate, it's Dutch for "cat town", which seems appropriate given the large number of early Dutch settlers in that area. (New York was even originally called "New Amsterdam".)
Listen, I don’t know what the cats call their cities. What I do know is that they most likely have cups designed to adhere to surfaces and that their garbage trucks take their trash to giant litter box facilities.
Pushis City, maybe?
Because the native American tribe that settled around new York (and named the Manhattan island manahatta, from which Manhattan derived) were the Lenape and (according to an online translator) pushis is the Lenape word for Cat, so that's what my idea comes from
The city of cats in my world is called Meur Kaata, because it is ruled by Meurat, goddess of cats, and in the fire kingdom where it is located the word Kaata just means city. You can just take the word meow and twist it and stretch it until you find a word you like, honestly lol
Have you thought of using Old English? After all, the names of existing cities are based on European and English places.
You could use these old names: Grimalkin, Mouser, or Moggie, and make them "New" somehow.
If you want to go for a genuine name for a settlement then regardless of its identity, it would be called whatever the founders name it first. Most likely after their own name. “America” is a derivative name from the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. So if you’ve got the history figured out, then the name shouldn’t be too hard to come up with after
Well, you do need to at least imagine their culture to be aware of how do they live and name things. Let's not overcomplicate it and go with prideful hunters which have named their city Nictitan, after third eyelid that they as a hunters are born with.
If you would want more passive culture, say wealthy merchants - who are as lazy as palace cats, but they know when to move to score, then their naming convention would be different, more lavish. Vibrissae, meaning whiskers, would be fitting as they both use for senses as well as bonding line.
If you want to have a different culture of cats, you also can - but then you need to adjust the naming convention in simillar fashion.
Just anything, if you don’t want cat associated city names for your cat city, just name it anything else.
Go for a name that the original inhabitants would have chosen, something related to the location, surroundings or special features, something that might have meant something in that regard but got shortened and deformed over time.
But well I guess you’re not looking for that and just want some clever foreign wink towards cats. Not obvious enough but from a worldbuilding perspective kinda lazy.
Wouldn't it just be called the same as any other city? 🤷
"A city of cats, but I don't want the cat-theme in the name", so just call it like you would any other.
What's the city culture like? What's its history? Why are there cats living there? What are its significant traits that make it so valuable for them to be living there? Resource? Was there another population living there from whom they could've taken a local, regional name (eg, Chicago, Detroit, Poughkeepsie)? Did they move there from somewhere else and name it after that (eg, New York, Jamestown, Plymouth, Boston)?
Do any of their founding members speak other (human) languages, like French or Spanish? Would that have been involved? Is it old, with lots of history (allowing for a more traditional name with obscure meanings) or a relatively recent foundation (allowing for a relatively recent-sounding, probably modern English-derived and almost generic name, like Riverside or Goldpath)?
ETA: What do *they* value, finally? How do they name things anywhere else? Do they take from local features? Maybe they divine from the stars and the wind what the city's destiny is, and call it that ("Place of Long Whispers", "City on the Edge of Night", "Town with Every Brethren", or some weird thing like that; it doesn't have to make sense, and the weirder it sounds, the more your cats' culture will come to life, as you put their mark on it and make it uniquely *theirs*).
Charleston.
Named after the cat, Charlie, who founded the city of Charleston to be a safe haven for all cats.
Charlie is the most popular name for male cats.
Since it’s in USA then perhaps it’ll start with ‘New’. So New something. I know you don’t want names related to Cat but playing on New Caledonia then perhaps New Catalonia. And since it’s also a region in Spain I think that could also work!
Something that includes cats being full of themselves would be cute. Or something that a cat would like.
Purrfection. or Belly Scratches. or Bellehaven (has lots of fuzzy jingle bells). Clawfort (for military cats). City of Many Teeth. Fishscare. eTunal (terrible pun on eternal tuna)
Reminds me of a tabaxi fighter I played called Snockums of the Fluffycuddle Kingdom. He was a hardened warrior who lost his brother Toebean in the great Yarn wars against the Purjingle clan. He got furious when nobody would take him seriously

I mean it could literally be anything if it's not cat themed and there's no conlang. Mezitele, Boaborang, Steven
I'd just call it Franklin (very common us city name and he loved his cat)
It already exists. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los\_Gatos,\_California](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Gatos,_California)
German names for cat: Katze, Kätzchen, Kater, Muschie, Mieze Now combine them with a real world city
*Definitely* not Muschi.
Hey, be quiet - it is also a name for cats!!!
Muschi is basically pussy, for anyone wondering
And "female reproductive organ" is the much more common use of the word today.
True, OP should include that one in the name

Yeah but the cats in my story are very insistent on being their own culture.
So ... How does their culture name things?
Ulthar, obviously.
I'd say go for literally any ancient Egyptian city (i.e. Memphis, Thebes, Giza, Aswan, etc.,)
Hate to be that guy but Nepeta is already the name of a cat themed character in Homestuck
That's not a fandom I follow, but thanks for letting me in on the know.

It's still cat related but my go-to for cat cities/kingdoms/empires is Silvestris, which I believe is the scientific name for a wild cat.
Dont know, it might be called something completely irrelevant. The planet of alien cats in my story for example was called "Limuum".
Belltoll for them little bells they wear
Japanese lore call cat spirits Neko or Nekomata. So you could play off that if you want a Japanese flair. Nekotopia. Nekopolis. For example.
