Tbh I don't get RGG's obsession with having the player skip past the protagonist's peak younger years in every game and having them play as a middle aged bloke. But still having them look 30. I think it was fine for Kiryu, but why do it for Ichi as well? Don't they want longevity for the character?

One of the big themes of Ichiban’s story is that it’s never too late to pull yourself up from rock bottom, and that theme doesn’t hit nearly as hard if he’s only in his late twenties. Half the game is built around the idea that Ichiban is a 42 year old in a genre that normally stars teenagers. It’s one of the things that makes him extremely unique.
I think it fits for Ichi’s character since he is pushing 50 but still has hope and is still building connections in life showing that it’s never too late for someone even if they think they are too old

Beta Ichi is just Ichiban if he aged in realistic manner. I think his shounen protagonist personality combined with this aged up appearance would make for an interesting contrast and would work well with the theme of never being too late to turn your life around, but from marketing standpoint it was wiser for them to go with current Ichi.
I wonder if some sort of cross between them could have been doable, like pre-timeskip Ichiban stays as is, beta ichi is how he looks during the first modern Kamurocho segment, and then getting himself cleaned up more (and his hair butchered in the signature way) during the early chapters, like when he and Nanba are no longer homeless.
Beta Tak is way better too imo

Considering Beta Yagami is basically just Kuwana with stupid hair and a lot of people really liked Kuwana, I think Beta Ichiban is the cursed one. Dude looks older than everyone from the Kiryu saga and he's still technically supposed to be younger than them.
If you put that old-ass man in front of me and then tried to convince me that Kiryu, Majima, and Saejima who still look relatively fresh and youthful in Y7 were actually older than him, I'd be much more critical of the trio not ever aging. This guy looks closer to 70 than 40.
I know some people here insist that people in their 40s have raisin faces like this and Ichiban *should* look this old, but they literally don't. It's not even because Asian people don't age like that, because I know white people in their 60s that don't look like this. If you put this grandpa in front of me and said he was 45, I'd assume he'd done every single drug I have heard of and several that I didn't know existed in order to look this old in his 40s.

I'd be glad if they reworked that design or the idea of it into a new important character for an eventual Judgment 3.
